  1. That’s an oversimplification, but for the most part* – yes. “Cheating” implies an action which gains something unearned, in this case by removing it from another person. “Cheating,” as the word has been applied to bogus “Found it” logs in this discussion, implies that innocent, honest cachers are somehow robbed of something tangible whenever a bogus log appears. *Inaccurate logs may or may not cause inconvenience. They can cause potential inconvenience whether the inaccuracy is an innocent mistake or an intentional lie. I have never denied this fact. Nobody has ever convinced me, however, that there is anything about an inaccurate “Found it” log that inherently violates my rights. If you are talking about solitaire, crossword puzzles or Geocaching, then I would answer by saying “Yes, you can cheat, but to do so would be pointless as you would only be cheating yourself.” If you are asking me whether it is possible to cheat other cachers by posting bogus logs, then I say your question is irrelevant. The words “cheat,” “game” and “rules” in that case would imply that there is some sort of official competition inherent to this hobby. Actually, it's not just the cacher that is cheating himself. Case example: While on vacation last year, my (now ex-) husband and I did ZERO caching. However, he came home and logged arm chair virtuals for both us so that he wouldn't be claiming them without me. Initially, I thought they were all virtuals from places we had actually been and maybe had taken a picture and so he was able to claim them that way. However, I discovered that some of them were from locations that were at least 50 miles off our route. When I went back last week and actually discovered this, due to my own personal integrity I felt I had no choice but to delete over twenty finds. That affected my count as I thought I had already reached a milestone of 400 and had logged it as such. So, then I had to go back and delete milestone logs and edit them. Not only did it affect the cachers who own those virtuals by me e-mailing them and explaining why I was deleting my log. It affected me because I had to fes up to the dishonest logs and it affected other cachers locally because I had to admit to them that I hadn't reached those particular milestones yet. It has the potential for affecting a large community of cachers now because my ex is still caching and still has all those arm chair virtuals and I don't. Just seems a little suspicious to those who actually care about it.
  2. I've never met a cacher who has crashed on the way to a FTF. However, I do know a couple that would go for one at 2am if it had just been posted. The addiction isn't really worth the loss of sleep to me.
  3. I think the worst thing I ever found near a cache was a dead goat that hadn't quite starting rotting out yet but was completely covered in flies and maggots. I did find a "toy" near a cache once.

  6. It is legal to *cross* the street, yes. It is not legal to stop in the middle of it. You are saying that it is legal to stop and search for a geocache in the middle of a city street? Want to point me to that law? We don't have laws that tell you what you "can" do. Laws, by nature, restrict behavior. In the absence of a law prohibiting some behavior, it is expressly permitted. It's the fundamental tenet on which our system of law is based. There is no law in this state to my knowledge that prohibits stopping in the median of a city street. Care to point me to a law that says that Geocaching is legal? Of course you can't. Until and unless it is prohibited by statue, it's expressly permitted. Your worst offense possible offense here would be jaywalking. Of course, there's a crosswalk less than .25mi away, I suppose one could even get the cache without risking committing such a heinous crime as jaywalking! Actually, there is a law in Onslow County, NC that states you CAN beat your wife on the courthouse steps after noon on Sundays as long as you use a stick no thicker than your forearm.
  7. I think posting pictures of your kids is a little overboard. I would report that post ASAP. You never know what kind of weirdos troll around and I certainly wouldn't want my kids pictures posted on the internet. As far as your original question: I believe any pedestrian activity is illegal on the highway, so that right there should make it an easy decision. I have to say I agree with Mousekakat on this one. If the pictures are plastered on your profile and also other places online then what makes this forum so out of bounds?
  8. I've actually run across a problem with my cache count due to my ex-husband logging arm chair virtuals after our vacation last year. He also logged three caches out of state about a month before we actually started caching in '06. It's ironic to me that he has done this because he has accused me of being a pathological liar and is pushing the word 'integrity' around so much lately that it's almost disturbing. I'm now convinced that he is abusing the word in order to convince himself that he has it even though he doesn't. I went in and corrected my cache count today. I dropped from 418 finds down to 382. Ouch! But, after giving it some time to sink in, I feel much better about knowing I have an honest cache count. He doesn't, and I'm not going to raise a fuss about it. It's his own issue to deal with and it will come back to bte him in the butt one day.
  9. I know this has probably been said before already, but I think it's important to log DNF's. It alerts the cache owner that there might possibly be a problem with their cache. It also alerts other cachers that it may take some time to locate the cache. I know a lot of cachers that go out on their lunch breaks and don't have a lot of time for searching. Just my personal opinion...I'd appreciate logged DNF's on my hides.
  10. For now, I guess you could say I'm a lurker. I'm Pooter2001. I've been caching since July 2006. My ex-husband was very active in the forums and he usually did all the reading up on caching while I just tagged along. I didn't even own my own GPSr until this year. Since my divorce in June, I am gradually getting more active in both caching and in the forums. For now I'm mainly reading and doing my homework so that I don't make a fool of myself as I create more hides and become more active in the GC community.
  11. Hi everyone! I've been caching for two years. However, I have never logged onto the forums before. My ex-husband used to do all the forum exploring and I was basically just along for the ride. I have recently become a much more active cacher and am getting ready to start hiding more caches as well. I just wanted to say hi so I'm not a total stranger when I come in with questions.
