  1. IOsMaps works, but it is fairly slow. Still loving mine - we've just been away caching for a few days and found more caches becuase we could look things up on the move than we would have done without it. My favourite moment was pulling up in a lay-by Lorraine and I looking at each other and saying "there has to be a cache here" 5 minutes later we had done it ;-) Logging 66 caches by iPhone is an interesting experience as well, it's do-able, but not pleasant (especially with no 3G).
  2. mtn-man / missJen - any chance you could do the honours - seems daft to create another thread for the same thing in a different forum ?
  3. Just tried it on mine here in Bristol and it does the same thing. Pretty certain that mine is not a Grey Import though - if it is O2 will have to do some explaining ! Slightly strange in that it only does it when you have saved it, then gone to the saved items list. Linsey.

  5. The other week in Gloucester Lorraine and I were sitting on the docks having our lunch being talked to by a very strange chap - we are still not entirely sure whether he was talking to us or not ! We also got asked if we needed any help by the local farmer whilst doing the Philosophers stone series (we were trying to work out which way the footpath went). Not strange in itself, except he was wearing Purple velour trousers, wellies and a tweed jacked ! Lins
  6. The 56ft thing has been explained (I think by Jeremy if memory serves) - it's believed that the 56ft is the diameter of the accuracy not the radius - so it's actually 23ft accuracy. I got one the other week - it's a fab bit of kit - obviously not as resilient as our GPSMap 60csx is, but then we use them for different things - if you can't get a 3g signal it will fall back to edge, then GSM, so I've not found anywhere you can't use it yet, but obviously things slow down. The only disadvantage I can see with it is battery life - if it goes flat on you you can't switch the batteries out. Not a problem for us as it's augmenting our caching kit. Def worth it for paperless though - there's a couple of times recently where we could have done far more than we did if we had it. The Groundspeak app is reasonably good - still ongoing development, but the features that are there seem to work. Just my 2p's worth.
  7. As far as I'm aware the only way of donig that would be to run a Windows Virtual Machine on the linux box - you might be lucky and something like WINE will do the trick, but I've not used WINE in ages. I've not looked at doing virtual machines (My desktop at home is Ubuntu and all of the s/w I write at work is Linux based) , but I do have a windows laptop which I do most caching activities with as I just find it easier (and if you know me you'll know how much I hate using M$ products of any kind !) There's this thread http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=200708 which has a load of stuff in. Lins
  8. I'm currently musing getting an iPhone - I like the idea of having net access when moving around - especially like the idea of paperless caching - The thing that concerns me is the battery life - particularly seeing as you can't just switch the battery over to a fresh one. How do people find the battery - how long does it last with the GPS on ? Cheers Linsey

  10. There's loads of people that run their own weather stations - you can find them at http://www.wunderground.com - just search for where your going and you should find a station reasonably close with the added benefit of a real time feed on a lot of them. Admittedly I tend to use this to work out if it's worth going flying (our strip is right next to the Severn so it's quite fog prone and the alveston weather station has a web cam on). Linsey
  11. Well done the both of you - we've a long way to catch you up ! Linsey & Lorraine
  12. Havn't got a diary for next year yet and seeing as we live in Bristol seems rude not to turn up ! Will a post it on my Monitor do ? Linsey & Lorraine
  13. Can we just say a big thank you to everyone who has placed caches down in the New Forest / Bournemouth area. We've just come back from a week's camping down there, and 45 caches later we are home again. We saw so many things that we would not have seen without caching, parked in some neat free parking spots and generally had a really great week - we think we've walked about 50 miles or so whilst caching (not including other bits and pieces that we did) which is far more than we would have done otherwise. I've just sat down and logged the whole lot so a big thankyou to the following (and apologies if we've missed anyone) - in no particular order (apart from it's the order we cached it !). spottyspaniels Mihaly nobby nobbs Grandad George crafty muffin Westie Walker The GG Team Banjo Billy Fluffy's Revenge Yorkie 30's Wife Whitelaw's steveand nicci seeking salters endoheretic Cracking Knees asc319 Wilkinsons LoisInTheForest DizzyPair Mr & Mrs Hedgehog Tin-tin & snowy Hythe Monkey Boys Paul and Judith Team Tate You've also given us some idea's for caches round our way. Linsey & Lorraine.
  14. That works really well (don't you just love firefox !). There's one additional step that I almost missed - you need to turn it on (you get a small icon in the bottom right of your screen that will be red if it's off, and green if it's on). Loverly.
  15. We did 12 out in Cyprus last year (including our first FTF !). All we did was look up the ones we wanted to do in google earth (with the caching overlay on first) and printed out the ones we wanted to do taking them with us. I would take note of any that tell you a 4x4 is required - we did a couple in a saloon car that I wouldn't have wanted to take my car on ! Took us to some places we wouldnt have seen otherwise and we had a great time doing it. We were up the Pafos end of the island. Linsey & Lorraine.
