  1. The trend this year that is driving the moderator team crazy is the self-appointed salesmen that have to make everything personal. The same people pile into every thread with the same vigorous presentation and then start sniping at each other. That's the part that has to stop.

Wouldn't you know it that this would be the year I'm looking at getting a new gps  I too have noticed this and am finding it difficult weeding out the info from the fluff. I feel like I just walked onto a used car lot. Reminds me of the rambling people in the Bing commercials.

  2. Garmin has been around MUCH longer than DeLorme, so what do you think the majority of buyers KNOW by name? That's right, Garmin.

So, type up all the CRAZY research you please, I KNOW how you manipulate the stats and I CERTAINLY hope newbs read this and will then know as well! Maybe you should be concerned for YOUR OWN credibility?

    DeLorme 1976

    Garmin 1989

Yep, DeLorme has made maps since waaay back then. Do you know when the first GPS was made by DeLorme?? Wasn't waaay back then, my friend! Since we're not talking maps but actually talking about GPS units, this info is very very flawed.

    Just saying...

So everyone knows, I am not msleading you here. Read when Garmin made their first GPS unit (1990) and their first handheld (1991) which was popular with troops. Now go back and read when DeLorme made their emergence into the GPS market (1995). However, that wasn't a handheld unit, it was a car-nav (if I'm reading the history correctly). I believe their first handheld came out in 2007?

In short, Garmin has been making handhelds much longer than DeLorme. Garmin is the name most of us would know instantly, unlike DeLorme. I'm fairly confident this will change in the very near future though!

You said "Garmin has been around MUCH longer than DeLorme", nothing about making handheld GPS units at all. If you add that after the fact, then, my friend, it's after the fact. The best way to mean what you say is to say what you mean. If someone is expected to read between the lines, the meaning has the opportunity of being clouded.

    edit to add: Just saying.

  3. Since none of this lovely repartee is likely to give anyone any actual "GPS buying help" maybe you guys could help everyone out but just giving it a rest for a while.

    Seriously.

As someone shopping for a new GPS I would have to agree. It's getting pretty useless reading all the posts.

    Seriously?

Have you tried the pinned topics for a list of where to start? Have you seen where we've suggested looking through reviews on amazon.com? MAN, this subject has been covered soooo many times, finding info is pretty simple, I would even bet doing a search would yield some good results.

Or, have you a specific question?? :(

    1. Serious as a heart attack.

    2. I read those threads and they all read pretty much the same "I got a free GPS from so and so, it's the best one on the planet! Everyone else's is inferior. If my gps can't do something right, then you don't really need to do that." Maybe it's been covered so many times that you are so bored, feel free not to read them and leave the rest of us who are looking alone.

    3. My "specific question??" was posted in the thread I started and I would like to thank the "usual suspects" for not polluting that thread with their guerrilla sales tactics..

  4. Is there a way to actually load these on to the 76CSx ?

Or do you have to keep it hooked up the the laptop ?

    Thanks.

They are displayed on the laptop, in Adobe Acrobat with the TerraGo Desktop plugin. You send NMEA from the GPS and you get a crosshair at your location. Maybe you can use a Colorado in Spanner mode but I'm not sure.
  5.

If you take a laptop, you can connect your 76CSx to it an display your position on a USGS geo.pdf that has the data you want. have the 76CSx send NMEA data to the computer. Might be fine for your use on a houseboat. Looks like this

That graphic is exactly what I'm looking for.... no... it's BETTER than what I'm looking for.

So... where do I find that and load it onto my 76CSx and/or Oregon 400t ?

You can get these free from the US Government. LINK Now the "usual suspects" will claim that they may have read somewhere that free maps will mess up your computer, GPS or the family car, but in truth they are paying to use the very same free maps.

I use this with my GPSMAP76CSx and it's serial cable just fine.

  6. 'ADD' appeared next to the arrow, and I found I was able to move the route leg from the point at which the arrow was situated.

I should dearly like to know to what use other enthusiasts put this facility, and are there other editing actions that can be carried out on the map display?

This uses the map display to add a via point to the route. As you use the cursor to alter the route, press Menu once again to add to the route.

  9. Yup, it's the same on my 60CSx. Wish it would do direct USB output so I don't have to buy some funky cable.

It will. You can use Garmin's Spanner program or Franson's GPS Gate to port the data into NMEA format via USB.

Um, no. The OP, and myself, wish to port DIRECTLY to another piece of hardware that isn't a PC. Software "patches" won't work in this case.

The Op is out of luck, but the 60CSX will work.
  10. I know Lake Powell was down a couple of years ago by something like 37 feet or so.

From what I've read lately, it's come back up a good bit because of a big winter snow pack melt.

There is one of the "cuts" on the waterway that had been closed for 4-5 years due to low water that is now open and saves about 12 miles in transit since you can use it now.

But the levels are still down so much that a several Marinas and ramps are still closed.

"Lake Powell is 63.78 feet below Full Pool (Elevation 3,700)

By content, Lake Powell is 63.98% of Full Pool (24,322,000 af) "

  11. Nice rundown, how are the units construction wise?

All three seem to be solidly built. Of the three I would say the garmin seems the least rugged, just because the rear door is a little flimsy compared to the other two. The Delorme with the twin screws on the battery door and the heavy rubber probably "feels" the sturdiest. The Triton is in between. But Like I said the build quality on all are good, not something I would take into consideration when choosing.

Thanks, I was looking into getting something on the heavy duty side, that's why I ask. Maybe a trip to REI should be in store.
  12. I opened a 2005 chicken tetrazzini* this past weekend and passed on the shake because of this recall.

The chicken was fine, though as hot as the Flameless Ration Heater got, the food was only tepid.

    * it came from a batch from last year, but according to the menus I've seen, it was a 2005 one.

Did you place it inclined against "a rock or something" when heating it?

:D I sure did. Can't overlook that key step.

My meatloaf and mashed potatoes this weekend were much better than the chicken.

So was it a rock or something? :D

I used Something both times. Maybe Something only works at higher altitudes. I'll try the Rock next time.

:D Too funny. Makes me want to eat Chili Mac for lunch!
