  1. Routing...the ability to have the GPS give you directions to drive to the cache (like a car-nav). The three GPS lines from Garmin will do this as well if you buy the routing maps (around $100 extra). And actually, any GPS Garmin makes (down to Starbrand's suggestion) will auto-route with the purchase of maps.

It would be worth your time to visit here for routing maps:

As I said in another thread, I have asked several times for people to correct me each time I say you must buy routable maps, no one, not a single (what I'd consider) pro has come forward and said those free maps will route. I see where you said contours meant routing, I think it might actually mean those lines that show altitude gain/loss. :)

If anyone has knowledge as to the meaning of contours in this context, please share and help with this question! :D

    THANKS!!

Contours means contour lines, routing means sat nav road routing. Those free maps have both. Just like a PN-20/30/40 can have both. I have replied to that other thread.
  2. IF you want routing, you WILL have to buy routing maps for any Garmin unit you decide on. There are free maps available, but NOT routing maps. Just so you know... :)

Aren't some of these free maps for the UK auto-routing?

    Just saying...

I've yet to have anyone tell me differently and I've asked often. So, as far as I know, and PLEASE, if you know differently say so, these maps will NOT route you, you must buy those maps!

    Just saying...

I'd be happy to translate from British to Michigander for you then...

    British: FREE UK Maps Home

    Michigander: FREE UK Maps Home

British: GB or Ireland Map with Contours (Routable)

Michigander: GB or Ireland Map with Contours (Routable)

Why mock me when you could just as easily click on the link and educate yourself?

  3.

Create your path in Google Earth - save as a kml. Use GPSbabel to convert to GPX. Open in mapsource. Save to GPS. Easy enough.

http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/ will also do a very nice job.

To the OP: I'm not sure all the posters here are trying to help you with your present GPS, seems like a couple are recommending you go out and buy a new GPS which isn't necessary at all.

  4. Ok, I did a search for this and cant seem to find the answer for my question. What I'm trying to do is create routes for doing some backcountry riding on my dirtbike. I would like to create routes leading me to caches and other cool locations. I have mapsource software with city navigator and the topo maps for my area, but the problem is they dont show all the dirt roads and trails that I need to create my routes. Ideally what I would like to do is create a route on google maps or earth and use the satellite images to lay out my path, then somehow transfer that my gps (Legend HCX), although from what I have read that doesn't seem possible. Has anyone found a way to do this? Thanks in advance!

I was reading about how to do that on this forum:

    http://forums.gpsfiledepot.com/index.php

  5. Most of the topo maps at gpsfiledepot also have a version for the Mac.

Couldn't get the ones I downloaded from them to download to the GPS or to open in BaseCamp.

According to Garmin's site, the maps need to have DEM embedded in them to be used with Basecamp, that's why custom maps or even City Navigator doesn't work with Basecamp. Try Garmin's RoadTrip on your Mac and it should work fine with the gpsfiledepot maps.
  6. Oh nevermind, i will be mad if i buy it and can't figure it out.. I am gonna go with the Geomate... Thanks guys for all your help.. hope I run across some of you in north alabama while out geocaching...

    Jeremy

From what I have read you are most likely making the best choice. Good luck and let us know how it went.
  7. The D means that the unit is applying correction from the WAAS signal.

WAAS is sent by the upper numbered sats, most likely the highest number sat displayed. for the US, they are numbered 48 & 51.

The GPSMAP 76S adds a built-in electronic compass, the GPSMAP76Cx uses the difference in location to get a bearing and needs to be moving to work right.

    Over 18,444+ caches found.

Creator of the 7 minute rule. Times up... get back in the jeep.

I found 413 caches in ONE day without cheating. Tell me again....why do you hate me?

wouldn't ya just need the 'over' OR the '+' ?....just sayin'.

I would think one or the other would be fine. Maybe he used his "7 minute rule" while editing his profile?

In any case this is a cat that knows the tools to find a cache.

  9. It doesn't matter. :D

I use mapsource to load the Garmin 60, and I use gsak to load the Nuvi.

It's gonna be personal preference. :o

Since you will use the handheld unit for the majority of the time, I suggest you pick the one you like. The software won't be much of an issue (based on the fact that you figured out how to load the Nuvi).

That's a lot of found caches. I would think you know what you're talking about.

  10. Bump*

I still cant this stupid cable to work even though I have downloaded the garmin communicator plug in several times. Getting frustrated.

Going camping and there are over 50 caches in the park where we're going. Sure dont want to manual these.

    Help!

Have to set the GPS interface setting to "GARMIN" on the GPS?
  11. I've seen these word games regarding "true paperless." I was "true paperless" before the GPS units came out with the capability built-in.

Yes it was via PDA. Yes that meant I was carrying another battery run device. Yes it was considered "true paperless". It was considered the premier way of playing the game before the built-in capability came along. Now it's considered a work-around. Does it make it less "true paperless"? No. True paperless means you don't have to reference a sheet of paper to play the game.

Let's not redefine it to mean just on premier GPS units.

That's what I thought, thanks for clearing that up.
