I have a proposal, seems to be agreed on by other cachers I've spoken to. When I suggested it to Groundspeak, they told me to post it here. I guess maybe they want to see if it's something enough other cachers would appreciate before they consider it.
My idea is this - the text messages geocaching.com sends announcing new caches (if you sign up for them) DO NOT contain the actual coordinates of the cache. I would like to see that change. I always have my GPS with me and a number of times I would have gone after an FTF but didn't have any means of finding out the coords. Sure would be helpful if they were in the message sent to my phone.
What do you all think?
My text messages are limited to 160 characters. I'm not sure you could get enough info in that amount of space to evaluate the cache prior to going for a find.

Loaded cachemate onto the palmm500 I got off of ebay. Ran a query on www.geocaching.com and uploaded it to GSAK. From GSAK sent it over to cachemate. The caches are there but the cahe descriptions (the details) and the logs do not show up. The basics (coordinates, owner, ..etc) show up.
A year ago I loaded this onto another m500 that I had and verything worked.
Anyone know what might be going on?
Did you create a *.loc file vs a *gpx file?

Have you looked into paperless caching??
As a premium member you can do pocket Queries.
A used PDA from ebay and cachemate will cost you less than even 1 or 2 ink cartidges for your printer.
And a good geocache manager such as GSAK. These toold have made my caching experience more enjoyable.

I agree, the FTF is more then enough for me. But I've seen $1 bill or a very nominal gift card to a popular coffee house.

I would be worried about a malicious cacher placing a virus or spyware on the drive before me

You need to be navigating toward something to have the arrow appear. On the map screen, you can use your rocker switch to point to the object and select enter to start the process.
Thanks,

I am very new to this hobby ( about 10 finds so far). I found a 3.5 difficulty cache 2 days ago. But I had to use the hint. It was not straight forward. I had to figure out what the hint meant. I actually went and looked for 2 other caches after giving up on the 3.5. While I was hunting for the others I could not get the hint out of my mind. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks and I went back and found it right away. Now I am wondering if I should consider the find a little less impressive because I used the hint. What are your opinions on this? Are the harder caches supposed to have a tricky hint or it just a purest thing to not use them. Thanks.
Every time I use the hint, I look up and the cache is right in front of me. As other have said, use them if you need them. That is why they are there

help!!
new to caching...
instead of a gps i use a usgs topo map, protractor, lensatic compass, and my pace count.
noticed when i'm plotting the coords given i'm 250 meters n/e off consistantly when i check my work on google maps (topo).
made my grids by drawing lines on the blue ticks
1:24 map and using 1:24 protractor.....last minor revision 1994 (it's new)
wondering where i'm going wrong?
is there a conversion?
map datum?? Does your map have UTM or WGS84 layout?

Somewhere along the line I have lost/missplaced the cd that came with my Explorist XL. I pray to the Geocache Gods that someone may have one and would possibly somehow share, sell or otherwise help me out. Any other suggestions are welcome.
My problem is that my laptop does not recognize the XL and want to download geocaches.
Have you check the manufacturers website?
End-user licensing agreements will probable prevent someone from sharing or selling this software.

Update: I've replied to this thread replied further down and may have addressed some people's comments already.

Ok, so I planted my first cache. Not a scenic location, just a dead-end road in a city
I know it's nice to have a cool, pretty, thought-provoking location, but I've been to other caches just at some little-used location.
So I get this as my second log entry: "We didn't see much value to this cache other than a quick number as a park-and-grab. We were disappointed in this cache location."
Am I right to feel P'd-off? I didn't put anything a suggest it was a scenic location, and they could've checked out the cache on the map right? Or did I break a scenic-cache law???
You can't please everybody. Don't let this bother you.

There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat, there is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to... The Outer Limits. — Opening narration – The Control Voice
One of my favorite shows as a kid. Scared the bejeebers out of me.

I log an attended log --- because I did.

I would like to see these come back also. Waymarking.com is a bit clunky and sometimes hard to search. Maybe a setup like how earthcaches are approved could be a way to go.

I have the 60cx. I've handled the 400t. There are a lot of great features in the Colorado, but I'm gagging at a $600 suggested retail for the Colorado. You can get a new 60cx for about half that, and do most of what the Colorado has to offer.

If you have high-speed internet, download Google Earth and install the geocaching .kml file. Pan along your route to find interesting caches.
Select the "Geocaching.com Google Map" link on any cache page, then pan along the route to find caches.
Premium members can do a route pocket query, which locates all caches within a set distance (usually 0.5 mile or so) of the road you're planning on taking.
Edit:
Actually, these are more for finding a continous string of caches along your route. Since you said you aren't "avid" geocachers, I recommend planning your route like normal (I assume you're planning on stopping for food and bathrooms). Concentrate on the locations where you're planning on stopping already. On the "Hide and Seek a Cache" page, enter the local town name in the "Address" box for a list of caches.
However, I do recommend making at least one or two finds in every state you drive through.
The best $30 you will ever spend is to become a premium member.

Check the Palm website for the latest desktop and hotsync manager for Vista.
My son has a new desktop with Vista and he has had no issues. I helped with the setup and the setup went very smooth.

From a liability standpoint, I would be worried about one of two things.
1) My dog biting someone.
2) Some one making an accusation that my dog bit them.
It may not matter if there is a warning posted. I've seen a lot of dog owners lose their dog her recently over what appears to be a 'small matter' of their dog nipping at someone.

Can someone tell me why the number of caches returned in the default GC.com My Finds PQ does not match the number of finds listed on my profile. My profile list 900 finds, but my PQ results only show 899.
One of you finds may be logged more then once by you

I posted this on another thread but thought best to open a new thread rather than hijack the other.
I've thought about hiding a cache in the area that will have about $200 of high quality Geocaching related starter swag. Plus the FTF prize will be something real special, like a single prize or a prize bag worth $50 to $75. There will be STF and TFT prizes as well.If I do I will probably make it a PMO cache until most or all the starter swag is gone.
What do you folks think about doing that? You think I should make it PMO only first of not?
By the way I will post it here when it's ready to go. If any of you want to go for it you can.
WOW!! You must be rich... Can I have a 'Loan'?

It is just the general accuracy of handheld units. Generally around 20 - 25 feet or so. Inside of that they will shift around a bit as the configuaration of the satallites overhead changes. The "spread" of visible sats plays a big role in the accuracy.
...and also adds to the fun of the sport.
