  1. First To Find. Some hiders put "FTF prizes" into their new caches - 1st finder certificates, trpohies or some stuff more valuable than the usual dollar store trinkets.
  2. Congrats KBer! I hope we will meet at some hydrocache in spring!
  3. Thanks KBer! Yes: yesterday I have found my 100th cache using public transportation (Bearcats' crack in the rock, MTA Metro North Railroad), My profile page is updated with some statistics. Warning: if I found some cache, it doesn't automatically mean that it is public transit friendly - some of them require several miles of boring walk or they are accessible only on weekdays/minor holidays - check your maps and schedules.

I wrote a program that did this automatically, and notified me if one was nearby. Alas, those days are gone. You can still get coordinates for unpublished caches if you know how, but nothing else. I would bet it can be pretty frustrating to arrive to the coordinates of a puzzle cache at 6AM! Czech caching in US.
  6. As a lynx user, I am not affected by IMG tags (and I believe users of graphical browsers can switch off didplaying images too, if theya re annoyed by them). On the other hand, the forums are slower or inaccessible lately, maybe because of server overload by complaints about the IMG tags ban? Czech caching in US.
  7. Multilingual logs are fun. Most Czech caches are listed in Czech and English, so the cachers can log their finds either in both languages or at least one of them, but even the folks whose active English is not so good usually post something like "We find cache ok" and a full log in Czech. Then there are some Germans finding Czech caches and logging them in German+English or German+Czech, which is sometimes really funny (no offense meant, wait until I'm back in CZ and start logging Saxon caches in my poor German). If you have a lot of French speaking visitors, maybe you should make a basic description in French, and also translate the hints with [english] and [french] sections. Czech caching in US.
  8. well at least Boston and vicinity should be safe, because the pirates "have never been to Boston in the Fall", right? Czech caching in US.
  9. When I check one or more caches on nearest caches page and press 'Download Waypoints' button, I get an Internal Server Error, the stack trace is: [invalidOperationException: Fill: SelectCommand.Connection property has not been initialized.] System.Data.Common.DbDataAdapter.GetConnection(IDbCommand command, String method) +40 System.Data.Common.DbDataAdapter.FillFromCommand(Object data, Int32 startRecord, Int32 maxRecords, String srcTable, IDbCommand command, CommandBehavior behavior) +45 System.Data.Common.DbDataAdapter.Fill(DataSet dataSet, Int32 startRecord, Int32 maxRecords, String srcTable, IDbCommand command, CommandBehavior behavior) +77 System.Data.Common.DbDataAdapter.Fill(DataSet dataSet) +38 Geocaching.OutputSubs.ReturnLocFile(String strWptCollection, Int32 DataSource, Boolean ShowSubscriberCaches) +213 Geocaching.UI.geocaching_nearest.ReturnLocFile(String strWptCollection) +171 Geocaching.UI.geocaching_nearest.Page_UserLoggedIn(Object sender, EventArgs e) +188 Geocaching.UI.WebformBase.IsLoggedIn() +1091 Geocaching.UI.geocaching_nearest.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) +307 System.Web.UI.Control.OnLoad(EventArgs e) +67 System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() +35 System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain() +753 I get the same error in Lynx and Mozilla. 10. Sure we are, noone except geeks has a use for such a gadget. This happened to me when entering a government building one Monday morning: - (opening a backpack at the security screening, taking out laptop, cellphone, pager, GPSr) - (a security girl) What is this??? - oh, that's just a GPS receiver - what is it? - (a security guy) yes, that's a GPS, you are a computer programmer, right? When I admitted that I am, everything was ok. You can probably carry a Geiger Mueller counter and nobody wonders, if you are an official geek. Czech caching in US.
  11. Transaction completed, I have received the TBs from Team Travel Pig, even if there was almost no signal at 14th street and we have to find each other by cellphones: "I am at the other side of the street, wearing the green jacket - Do you wear a baseball cap? - No, look a little to the right - Yes, here!" Nice to meet you Team Travel Pig, I'll drop the bugs in local caches this week/weekend. Czech caching in US.
  12. I have to admit I trade down sometimes, taking a dollar store item and leaving my signature item, a 20CZK coin = $0.732 according to the current rate. But it is quite a nice coin, it has a Czech Lion on the rear and Saint Wenceslas as a horseman on the front side, usually the next cacher takes it. And the official rate is just unreal, you can buy 1-2 beers (half liter pitchers) with it, try it with a dollar :-) Czech caching in US.
  13. Can't find it on magellangps.com right now, but you can buy "Magellan SporTrak Map ATV Special Value Pack", which s basically SportTrak Map + bike mount (I suppose it can be mounted on an ATV, at least the cover picture shows one) + data/power cable. I was recently buying one at onlinemarine.com for $232 - sent it to a friend who will use it for biking, so no ATV references... Czech caching in US.
  14. I'll be moving from NJ back to Czech Republic next summer and we'll be shipping some our stuff as a small freight shipment - I was already thinking about taking my cache and some spare ammo boxes. I can pack one or two more caches if anybody is interested. Just I'll have to cheat when declaring that the shipped items are my property and not intended for trading ;-) Czech caching in US.
  15. I just got my free mini Maglite from Oracle: looks very nice but there are no specifications about the light output... if it is not good for outdoors, I can trade it at a computer-themed cache Czech caching in US.
  16. I knew about the site for some time (from WheresGeorge glossary, Google searches for local parks etc.) and thought it was a nice idea, but the final impulse to register and buy a GPS was when I stumbled on a broken cache and its contents scattered around - took it home to dry and replace, bought Magellan 315 2 weeks later. The cache didn't survive much longer and the owner is no more active, but thanks anyway! Czech caching in US.

And yes I like it more than the white ones (my CITO shirt gets more and more unwashable mud stains). Czech caching in US.
  18. quote:Originally posted by Jeremy:Webcam and locationless caches, however, are off limits for dropping of travel bugs. Why couldn't be webcams used the same way as virtuals? It would be cool to have TB transfer between cachers recorded on a webcam. Czech caching in US.
  19. Since I have switched from Magellan 315 to Geko 201, I am thinking about getting a solid case for Geko... now I really appreciate that Mag315 protection against accidental power-on (you have to press Enter after pressing pressing Power). It is quite frustrating to get GPSr out of the backpack and find that the batteries are low and there are 20 new waypoints marked :-| Czech caching in US.
  20. quote:Originally posted by Rattlehead:Haggaeus, Here's one you found on Aug. 30. - "Music" Really, and the sticker looks bright fresh comparing to the dirty container, wondering why I didn't see it 3 days later - probably just eliminated it out of memory as an unimportant fact. 21. I bought Cobra GPS 100 about a month ago when my Magellan 315 died. The unit looked pretty rugged (they claim IPX7 waterproofness), but the performance was awful - it took ages to get a lock and after a movement the lock was lost, the unit started initializing again, forgetting position and time. I sent it back and got Geko 201 instead. Now I see that the strange user interface I saw on Cobra was almost an exact copy of the Garmin one (including such details as the annoying popups with scrollbars when editing text / manually entering coordinates). Probably I had just a bad luck for a bad unit.. could be an ok lowend unit if the reception worked well. Czech caching in US.
  22. Well there is a lot of opensource solutions for tracking bugs/feature requests (Bugzilla comes to mind first)... the question is how difficult would it be to implement them in gc.com environment (Windows servers) and if TPTB would allow the general public to peek into their plans. Another nice example is distributed.net's .plan page, looks easy to implement. Czech caching in US.
  23. I wonder if the new Cache in Every Park cache (not approved yet) is inspired by this thread :-) Czech caching in US.
  24. I didn't notice any blue stickers on the 6 caches found on Labor Day weekend in the western part of Harriman SP (Dutch Doctor - Black Mt. - Boston Mine areas). Czech caching in US.
