  1. I just received my Northern Ireland geocoin, and it is great, as all the previous posts have said. With a Landsharkz produced coin, what else would you expect. The working together of Donny Moore and the Landsharkz crew made a very unique coin. I had forgotten that the "Giants Causeway" was on the coin. I am lucky enough to have seen the real thing and it is something. Northern Ireland is a great place to visit, even if it is a 'Wee Country'. Thanks again Dunworley.
  2. Hello and welcome! You will learn a lot--there is a lot here to look at. Your choice of a GPSr is a good one. You will find that you have very little trouble in trees, cloudy days, etc. Just one little reminder--when you go out into an area that is a tough go--take someone with you. At least a cell phone. You never know when the unexpected happens and you break a leg or something worse. Have fun--it's a great sport.
  3. I geocache on Vancouver Island which has some very heavy rainforest, canyons, hills(not mountains) and I have not been in a situation that my 76csx has failed me. I even get good coverage when we are travelling down the highway and hold the unit on my lap. What ever Garmin did to increase reception sure worked. My friend uses an older (about a year) etrex venture and he has trouble in the trees and unless he sets it on the dash of the truck or holds it out the window (BAD idea) he can't pick up anything while driving. I think you will be very happy with the 76csx.
  4. GPSMAP76csx is my recommendation and the best price that I found was out of GPS Central in Calgary.
  5. I have the 76csx and I think it is a great unit. So does the chap I go caching with. He has an older model Venture and you should hear him muttering when he has to go back to a clearing to get a signal--something I have not had to do yet and we have been in some pretty heavy forest. (West coast of BC) The one thing that stands out is how good it is on batteries compared to other unit. I seems that it last at least half again to twice as long on a set.
  6. If you are going off the beaten path, a cell phone, a pen or pencil, some water, a bit of food, a partner and of course, let someone know what area you will be in. Some trade items are nice, but not necessary.
  7. Welcome young Lady. My only addition to the good advice already posted--If you go off the beaten track, please take someone with you. My neighbor and I did a very challenging cache and I overestimated my abilities be a large margin. If he hadn't been with me, I might still be out there. Nearby caches are great for doing by yourself, but it sure helps to have someone you can count on for the harder ones. Enjoy, it is a wonderful sport. And good choice on the GPSr. I use a Garmin 76csx myself and haven't regretted the cost one bit. A great and accurate unit.
  8. There are no dumb questions--no one is born knowing it all--some just think they do.
  9. I just bought a Garmin GPSMAP76CSX from a local shop on Van. Island. They did an exact price match with GPSCENTRAL out of Calgary and I have the advantage of local shopping. The people that I go caching with seem to feel mine is the most accurate unit in our small group. This is my first unit, but after a ton of research, quite a bit of hands on in various stores and a lot of reading in different forums, I feel it was the best bang for the buck right now. Of course, that can change at any time.
