  1. hehe, if only I could.
  2. True, but I don't know that I can block images from a subdirectory of a server. I don't want to block all of the graphics from Geocaching.com.. I happen to like the vast majority of them! So that's where the idea of serving them from their own subdomain came from. Current plan is to write an addon for phpNuke that will let users choose to block sigline graphics, and to ask Trippy to add it to MiGO.
  3. I have and I will again. How about serving a more economical file type like png or gif?
  4. I want to be able to block them on other sites where people use them in their sig lines, like on my state site, ( www.mi-geocaching.org ), a phpNuke based website.
  5. I would like to be able to block the display of the statbar graphics in my browser, because on dialup internet, they have a big effect on the load time of the forums at the Michigan Geocaching Org site. Could these graphics be served from a separate subdomain, like stats.geocaching.com, so that I could easily tell my browser to ignore them?

    Stats Visibility

I find the numbers to be of some use, but am mindful that all measurements are estimates and that statistics reflect our own value judgements just as much as they reflect the matter being measured. I keep my own count simply as a form of journalism. For the tally, I leave out events and count in letterboxes. So my tally is different than the one reported on geocaching.com. If I had the option to not display my geocaching.com tally, I would probably use it, but don't feel myself to be at any loss without such an option.
  7. I like PNG format very much because it is lossless, it supports everything from binary to true color, usually compresses better than GIF, and doesn't suffer from any patent problems. (Although the LZW patent is now expired in the U.S.) PNG would really cut down on traffic in terms of those stat-bar images. The JPEGs that this site serves are about 13KiB, while the PNGs that KeenPeople serves are about 1KiB.
  8. I spent considerable time thinking about this very question last weekend at the MiGO Winter Social, and my favorite answer was "a meander of geocachers". Which, happily enough, has already been posted here.
  9. Yo Harold! Trash Cache is an awesome idea but you need to pick a new name. That's the name of my cache! Here in Michigan we're all excited about "trashing out." We're working with the DNR to have a Trash Out Day this spring at the game area where Trash Cache is hidden. TRASH CACHE Great minds think alike, John
  10. My binary 100th cache was memorable for three reasons. It was my first time being first finder. I learned some trigonometry. We found it on my birthday. [This message was edited by RetroJohn on January 03, 2003 at 06:22 PM.]
  11. If those photocopied bills have a valid serial number you can type them into Where's George, but that web site has a note somewhere about only tracking genuine bills. Someone else could get those photocopied ones cancelled. I tried to type in the serial number on $100 bill wrapping paper and was presented with a rude message about that not being valid due to being printed in a public place. I deleted my account. I really wanted to know where else in the world people had that wrapping paper!
  12. It would be helpful if the Advanced Search page could search for keywords in the descriptions of caches. This feature would expedite searching for caches within a park or along a trail, no matter what they are named. Thanks, John
  13. I think that the geocaching cards I've seen are excellent signature items. If I place a cache I will certainly make it a goal to collect a deck of them. The dollar bill photocopy is yet undecided. Conjecturing now, it will be pasted in a geocaching scrapbook, and when I see it again some day, I will remark "There's that mysterious dollar bill that leads to a trailor park in Lowell." j
  14. Thanks Rusty, I think it's a bad choice for a signature item, since it doesn't have a signature. We went looking for those coordinates! I guess we'll avoid those in the future. John
  15. Nope, that's in Chicago and the coordinates on the bill point to a trailor park on Bowes Street in Lowell, Michigan. I did try setting the coordinates as my home coordinates and searching for nearby caches, but none matched. Perhaps tomorrow I'll try using the coordinates as NAD27.
  16. I think the clues you're thinking of are for the All 4 One cache. There was one of those there, and we've already found that one. One thought was that maybe it's a signature item and the coordinates point to this person's home. However, there's no signature on the bill, only the company logo. Also, we assumed the the coordinates were WGS84, as all others are on geocaching.
  17. Found in the cache "Covered Crossings 2" but I have also seen these in other caches.
  18. A friend has informed me that the D is the logo of the Square D company. But I didn't find any info on their page about photocopied dollars, nor did I find any Square D distributors in Lowell (where the coordinates point to.
  19. I found this item at a cache. It's a photocopy of a dollar bill, and the portrait of Washington has been replaced by a capital D. There are coordinates instead of a serial number, and "e-trex vista" has been printed on the bill. I thought the coordinates would lead to a cache but they led to private land. What is this item? thanks, John
  20. I've got this old laptop that would be ideal for geocaching. It's pen based and the screen faces up when the laptop is closed. Is there a good GPS product for Dos to track my course, run error correction, and all that, without requiring the keyboard during runtime? Thanks, John
  21. I just debuted a new program, "Quick UTM", by placing a copy in Indian Joe's Treasure. If you aren't up for searching on foot for a copy of it, you can download it at home.netcom.com/~alrai. It doesn't have so much overhead as other GPS software and is designed to work in conjunction with a spreadsheet in Excel, Quattro Pro, or any other such program. Help is included. Feedback will be appreciated. Thanks, John
