  1. I like playground caches. Our grandson is often a part of our geocaching adventures. He is really to young to particapate but he can sure play while I search. I save these types of caches for days when we entertain him. Take a kid caching!
  2. Maybe people just don't put them back where they found them? I stick a piece of paper in the caches spot if there are other places it could go.
  3. My girlfriend ordered a gift for me and the UPS guy delivered it while I was home. They shipped it in the original box so I saw what it is and she was so pissed she refused it. Now she is fretting over what else to buy me. I would like a PDA that I can use for paperless caching. She can't spend too much but if there is an affordable unit that I could use I will drop the hint. Does anyone have a suggestion?
  4. Very strange problem. Maybe an issue with a firewall or popup blocker???? That's a shot in the dark i'm afraid.
  5. It did exsist 15 years ago. We used LORAN and the cache was fish!
  6. They closed several of the stores around here because they weren't doing enough business. The one here in Clearwater,l FL went belly up as well.
  7. I would probably pass it by. I really don't like looking for caches on or around places that may lead people to think I might be tampering.
  8. I'd go back to fishing and drinking or drinking and fishing.
  9. It only took several hours but I finally got a picture posted.
  10. My Girlfriend works at Publix and she brought home this nifty container. It is supplied by Bayer when you buy a bottle of asprin. It is a yellow plastic pill box key fob. It has a screw on lid with an O ring seal. It measures about 3/4 inch round and about 1.5 inches tall. Not sure how long it will last in the elements but its worth a try.
  11. IT'S ALL MY FAULT!!!!! This happens every time I click on the "Become a premium member" link. Guess i won't do that again.
  12. One of my pet peeves are caches placed on or near utility equipment. One was behind an electric meter on a sewage lift station. Another was by one of those big junction boxes the phone company has. I don't feel comfortable messing around those things.
  13. In a small six pack cooler I carry: GPS unit and spare batteries 12 volt 700 mah rechargable battery with power cable to GPS Hemostats and a metal probe Small hand mirror Spare logs and plastic bags Spare cache containers of various sizes Note book and several pens/pencils Various small items to trade Sometimes a camera Lastly what I call a Place marker. An orange fishing float with a hoop of string. When I find a cache that hangs I will put the float in its place while I sign the log. I once spent a great deal of time looking for the top of one of those bison tubes that was hard wired to a branch. Of course I carry my cell and a pocket knife on me.
  14. There are 3 caches in my area that I have been unable to find. Yesterday I went to one of them and noticed that it was close to high voltage power lines. My GPS jumps all over the place. I checked the other 2 caches and found that both of them are near power lines as well. After reading all this info I think I will skip caches placed near high voltage lines.
  15. I am 49, soon to be 50. Caching for about 3 months. 66 finds and 8 hidden.
  16. Batteries that my GPS or digital camera complain about will run my walkman or small transistor radio for quite some time. I have even loaded my flashlight with "spent" batteries from my GPS and got good service out of them. Many times one battery in a set will die fast and cause the GPS or camera to complain. A battery tester comes in handy here. Check all batteries in the set and see if one of them is flat. If so, go thru your old ones and find one similar and replace the flat one.
  17. I knew it!!!!!!!!! http://www.sptimes.com/2006/11/06/Tampabay..._made_for.shtml
  18. I bought a power cable for my GPS from Tiger. It was in stock, shipped the same day, confirmation was emailed with tracking number, it arrived in four days and they had the best price. Highly reccommended!
  19. Yesterday the funeral for an ex Dunedin, FL mayor was interupted when a maintenence worker saw a man and woman place a small container behind a sign. The police were called in to investigate and later the bomb squad came to destroy the 1 inch by 1 inch metal cyclinder. I couldn't help but think that it was a couple people out hunting caches. I am going to start marking the outside of my caches better. I forget to do it and many I find are not marked.
  20. After forgetting where a micro was hanging in a tree I made a "place marker". I found an orange fishing float at the store and tied a string to it. When I find a hanging cache I hang the float in its spot. I then sign the log and replace the cache where the float is hanging. A mirror is another must have item. I do not put my hand anywhere I can't see. A friend grabed a wasps nest thinking it was a film canister. Ouch!
  21. Our local WalMart has the orange ones for 86 cents each. I give them a light sanding and apply paint. A little silicone will keep the gasket in place.
  22. I thought I would buy some mapping software for my laptop and connect a GPS antenna to it. I saw MS Streets and Trips with a GPS locator so I bought it. I am not real happy with this software. The biggest problem is the L/L formats do not match my handheld or the formats listed for the caches. The software only does decimal or D/M/S, but only 2 decimal places. Also I don't think it will import the LOC files but I haven't gotten that far yet. Just for grins I tried EasyGPS but it does not see the GPS antenna connected to the laptop. I think it is looking for NMEA and the antenna must be putting out some propritary data. Does anyone have any input on other software or workaround with what I bought?
