  1. I concur with those that posted to share this story in the log. This type tale makes hiding caches worthwhile and adds enjoyment for those that stumble across the story. Please share!
  2. I was once seeking a cache that would have me project a waypoint 180 ft at bearing ........ but couldn't get that function to work on my GPS at the time. I simply computed the reverse, then walked the proper distance from the beginning. Took a few minutes, but found the cache.
  3. Maybe a new cache just inside your property line. Shouldn't be hard to maintain there.
  4. Go back and get it. Just kidding, might be a way off. Best to just contact the TB owner through the profile and ask them to move it. Be sure to identify the trackable and give both caches by the name an number to be sure correct ones used.
  5. Just a quick note in case someone else with this question stumbles across this thread. Microsoft will no longer support Streets and Trips. Delorme's Street Atlas is a very similar program, better in many ways and at the same price. It too will support plugging a GPS into the USB.
  6. I am very pleased with the GPSMap60, a unit close to the 62.
  7. Sorry folks. I am still stuck on the first post, and trying to decide if any geocacher I've come across would be considered coherent.
  8. As long as you are in the forums, very often a good unit will be getting sold by some one who is upgrading. Check out the garage sale section in these forums, but be sure that any unit that interests you operates on USB and not serial. Much easier.
  9. I haven't ever thought about the state issue as I keep all the lists updated on GSAK and just run a filter from there.
  10. Topic has been hashed already. Just go to second tab on pocket query page to get your PQ.
  11. I tend to frown on guardrail caches (although I am not too proud to find them) simply because of the hazard of passing traffic. Stopping on shoulders can be quite dangerous, and even protecting yourself with a parked vehicle is not completely safe as those get hit also. I do realize some guardrails are along lightly trafficked roads or along parking lots and have no problem there. Whenever possible cachers should find off-road parking and not on the shoulders for safety sake. A year or two ago a family was killed pulling off the shoulder in front of traffic in Texas. If you must stop on the shoulder, please get up to about half the speed of the highway before coming out in traffic if possible.
  12. As suggested already, on the map bend the line to follow the roads nearest the bike trail and then just broaden the search area width to cover all the area you wish.
  13. I wish to thank all that have contributed to my bookmark lists of truck and RV friendly caches. With your help we have grown one list to the breaking point and am dividing it to make more space available. Check your states closely before downloading, some Central U.S. states are being moved to Midwest. Please keep sending your suggestions and cache submissions to ME remembering that there must be legal and safe parking for an 18-wheeler within reasonable walking distance. Central U.S. Eastern U.S. Midwest States U.S. Southeastern U.S. Western U.S. edit to fix links
  14. Can you go exploring on your 10 or in the manual and see the amount of storage space available. I am not familiar with the unit, does it take a micro-SD and is it there? Then tailor your download size to fit with a little cushion.
  15. Was recovering from back surgery and Googling some trucking sites when "GeoTruckers.com" kept popping up. Investigated that, then Geocaching itself and thought it might be a good way to get some exercise when on the road. GeoTruckers has seen demise with the passing of it's founder, but several of the members are still hanging around in caching.
  16. Still using a GPSMapCSx60 and GSAK. I move the PQ into GSAK, run the desired filter, then a macro for cache info. I load caches directly from GSAK, then the macro output using the Garmin POI plug-in.
  17. Same here. I have one of those "stupid phones" which downloads slowly. I do miss the WAP, but understand the need to safeguard security. Now, I just put it off until later or save the cache for a return trip.
  18. Hear! Hear! I find myself caching all over the country solo, a decent sized fellow. As a rule, I will not cache any playground when children are present, never in an area where children are without adult supervision, never in a cemetery if mourners are present. I don't go digging through the landscaping, just passed a cache yesterday because several branches were broken on bushes near ground zero and I don't wish cachers to be blamed. Hiders need to think and get permissions, seekers need to use common sense and be respectful.
  19. The GSAK is to exclude unwanted caches in PQs already downloaded. As was suggested, a zig-zag caches along a route or just backing away from the lake with the centerpoints of the query would avoid that effort. In favor of GSAK, I use it extensively in my travels. I have several databases within the program, both permanent and a few which are used for temporary projects. When getting a multi-state run, I plan my route and filter the databases with a polygon filter or occasionally, using points or even just states. For those who travel and cache, I consider it a must.
  20. Makes sense if you wish to open the area to cachers. You control the hide location and activity level at all areas, and if you desire to do the planning can cover the area completely so no others can be approved in your area without conflict to the proximity guidelines. I suggest this, of course, not knowing the extent of the area.
  21. Might get around to posting in a few days. This should give all ample time to contain photo viewing devices in protective elements and obtain safety shields for your eyes. My pic is truly that bad!
  22. Although most of my trackables have gone missing, I have also had the pleasure of stumbling across one or two that were misplaced, I got them caught up. Once, a former co-worker gave me a couple that were taken before life and motherhood interferred, I put them back into circulation after 3 years missing to the owners. Like others, I just consider finding one in a cache anymore a bonus, and I ignore any rules put by cache owners that I must leave to take as that would just result in the trackable never moving.
  23. Like Brian said, it uses a 9 pin serial port, not often found on computers anymore. Without that port, you will need an adapter cable. It can be loaded by wire if you have that, holds 500 waypoints.
  24. Search with the hider's name, download the PQ, and make your map.
  25. Mr Trucker Lee you are living in the past. If you have GSAK go to the geocaching.com API access, click advanced, put in your name and hers under "Not found by" and the file returned will be what you want. Now sharing it with her is a whole another issue. Hadn't discovered that yet in GSAK. Thanks!
