  1. Thanks for the info everyone! Looks like I'll be paying for a subscription.
  2. Thanks! Jus so we are clear, using the method you described, I can take the images off the GPS unit, store them on a hardrive and then transfer them back to the unit as needed all without using base camp? Will the files work if I put them on the SD card?
  3. I just used up the demo of BirdsEye in Basecamp and I'm very impressed with the quality of the image in my area. So I am strongly considering purchasing a subscription. Before I do, I had a few questions that hopefully some of you will be able to help me with. I noticed that the images take a long time to download and the resulting file size is pretty huge. This has me wondering if it is possible to download a image, transfer it to my massive external hard drive and then just load the image when I need it on the device. I want to avoid re downloading the same images over and over. If possible, I plan on downloading the images for all of the areas I frequent and then leaving them saved to my hard drive for use as needed. The download process takes too long to have to download images every time I need them. So my questions: Can I take a previously downloaded sections of images and save them on to my hard drive for later use? I imagine the downloaded images will be locked to the device that the subscription is for, and that is fine, but will the images work if they are saved to the SD card instead of the unit's internal storage? If so, can the saved images be transferred to the MicroSD card directly from my hard drive, or will all transfers have to be done via Basecamp? What happens if you let the subscription run out? Will my downloaded images still work? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
  4. I don't have a 64, so I can't try it yet. I'm asking these questions to find out if a 64 will meet my needs before making a purchase. I'm not sure if the Topo maps will fit in internal storage or not, but even that still wouldn't meet my needs perfectly. Another problem I have with CN being stuck on the SD card by itself is I liked being able to keep my Geocaches on the SD card so if there is ever a problem, I can pull the card reboot the unit and go on about my business. I don't understand how Garmin handles their maps anyway, I can take the Topo DVD and install as much or as little of it as I want to internal or SD Card. Is CN not available with that same level of freedom? If not, why isn't it? I'd repay for the maps no problems if they can be used how I currently use them on my 62s
  5. I have a question for the 64 owners out there. I bought the Garmin 24k maps as well as City Navigator when I first got my 62s. I quickly realized that it is impossible to use both maps at the same time because of City Navigator being on its own SD card (the topos came on a CD). So I actually had to get CN from an alternative source just so I could have it along with topos on the unit at the same time. This fix won't work on the 64 because of the mmap verification stuff they've added. So I am wondering if it is possible to get a legit copy of CN from a CD and stick it on the SD card along with the legit Topos from CD? I require both map sets on the unit at once. Is it possible with a 64?
  6. Looks like the 62stc isn't $249 anymore. That's just my luck, I had planned on buying one while it was on sale but needed to wait for payday, which is tomorrow. Kind of a bummer. I have and love the 62s, but having the camera and the ability to use device recharged batteries would have been a nice upgrade. If anyone else knows of a place with the stc for $249, please let me know.
  7. I used my phone to grab a newly published cache a few weeks ago. The email arrived at 11pm and the cache was only 2 miles away, so I knew that I had a good shot of being the FTF. I ran out the door with my phone, which had 37% remaining battery life and found the cache first. The whole trip took less than 15 minutes, but within that small amount of time, my phone went from 37% to 9% remaining battery life. This is a phone that went from 9am to 11pm with using only 60ish % of its battery life and then lost 28% of its battery life in only around 15 minutes. Scew that. GPS in phones just uses way too much battery power. Sure, you can use an external battery charger, but that drain is still going on and still effecting the lifespan of your battery. Not to mention, I've lost track of how many times I've dropped my 62s. It has been dropped on pavement and then kicked accidentally, dropped on gravel and wood, it has even fell into a stream. My 62s is still going strong though. Otterboxes offer some protection, but why risk your smartphone when a 62s, which is still a fantastic GPS unit, only costs $200? Most people are tied to contracts with their smartphone. If you break it while Geocaching, the carrier isn't going to care. They'll still want their money each month. With that in mind, I honestly don't understand why anyone would use their smartphone for geocaching full-time instead of a cheaper and in most ways better, dedicated GPS unit.
  8. My 62s has had City Navigator on it since the day I brought it home and it has successfully navigated me where ever I have needed to go for a couple of years now. It beeps at you once when a new command shows up on the screen and then beeps twice in a row real fast when it is time to actually perform that command. It works great and I appreciate not needing to load caches into a car GPS and the 62s. I even added an overlay and a new profile for night time so I can switch profiles to switch the map into night mode as needed. I keep it in a ram mount on my dash and absolutely love it as a car GPS. I've logged nearly 18,000 miles on its odometer. The only problem with using it is you won't get voice navigation or lane assist. Car GPS units are better for the car, but I can't justify the price myself. The 62s does everything I need well enough.
  9. interesting. i got a brand new 64st and tried to put morocco OSM on it and it says "cant authenticate maps". i do have the purchased CN Europe NT and it works fine, but no OSM? Geo Jedimeister, what firmware version are you running? how are your OSM maps installed? mine are on my SD card in the "Garmin" folder like the others. That is what I fear. Anti-piracy measures usually end up hurting honest consumers as much or more than they hurt pirates and the old policies already drove consumers to piracy. Heck, the restrictions Garmin has already placed on their maps is reason enough to drive many people to pirate maps. The way it works now, you can pay $100 + dollars and enjoy having a map that is only usable on one GPS forever, and be stuck dealing with being limited to one map on one SD card. Or you could pay nothing and have dozens of Garmin maps on one SD card for use at all times as needed. Garmin's own policies make doing it the legit way a suckers bet. I've already paid enough money for maps I can no longer use. Garmin is forcing people to the gpsunderground. If what you say about OSM not working on the 64 is true, than that is just another case of honest consumers being hurt. They keep this up and I'll be forced to look for an alternative.
  10. Why would you be aggravated BAMBOOZLE? If you bought the cards from Garmin, and they're legit, they'll work just fine. Only the pirated stuff will no longer work. There's an excellent chance that eventually ALL Garmin units, including your 450 and 62, will verify maps the same way. What exactly is going to happen to my existing units to change the way they verify maps ? It would seem the only way for that to happen is to download a future software upgrade. Once my units behave properly I never upgrade further for fear of bugs. It was my understanding that the poster who complained said he bought a REAL CN Map that his 64 won't read. These changes will never affect how I use my current Garmin units. I always create a back up of the update file each time I do a firmware update. When you plug your unit into Garmin Connect to perform a update, a new .gcd file will be downloaded and placed inside the units storage. So all you have to do is copy that file over to your computer before you unplug the unit to perform the update. I've kept all the firmware files released for the Garmin 62s since I've owned one, so I can always downgrade the firmware and stop updating the moment they decide to make a change that I don't agree with.
  11. If it was me, I'd buy a new model, but I have a bad habit of buying electronic gizmos I don't really need. Something my wife hates about me The latest automotive GPS I have my eye on is the Garmin Nuvi 2798 LMT. It isn't out yet, but features all of the bells and whistles Garmin has came up with so far and even comes with a back up camera. I don't need it, my five year old Nuvi still serves its purpose well, but I do want it and will have it. I think you'd appreciate making the upgrade also. The new models have several nice features not found on your current model.
  12. As a mostly satisfied 62s user, I find the new 64 a bit disappointing. I had been looking forward to see what they would do as an upgrade, but this is completely underwhelming. The same case, same screen size, probably the actual same screen but I haven't checked on that yet. Overall, it is just meh. I had been waiting for a new one of these, but now that it has arrived, I see no compelling reason to leave the 62s at all. If you haven't already bought one, I'd rush out and get a 62s while you can at the discounted price and pass on this one. What really ticks me off is L.L. Bean already has the 64, but still isn't stocking the Monterra.
  13. I've been looking on their website every day for the last month, but they still hadn't listed the Monterra for pre-order. I checked in the store, and the people there hadn't heard anything about if they'll be carrying it or not. So today I went onto their website and did the chat thing to ask. Turns out, L.L. Bean has no plans to carry the Garmin Monterra. This is a little disappointing for me, because I prefer to do my shopping for outdoor equipment with them. The helpful lady on the chat line told me that they won't be carrying it unless they get more requests for it from their customers. She said most of the products they add to the site and stores is done based on suggestions, and if people don't suggest the Monterra, they won't be offering it. Just thought I'd let other L.L. Bean customers know, if you want a Monterra from them, you'll need to request it. I've already turned in my suggestion and I hope they start stocking it soon.
  14. I think this review this review and the replies here have sealed the deall for me. I'm ordering one later today. One last question. Who should I order from? Garmin's own website or one of the retailers. I see REI mentioned a lot for GPS units.
  15. Thanks for the feedback. I never thought about that, but you might be right. I'd probably look like I cant read time if I'm constantly staring at my phone lol.
  16. Hello everyone Thinking about taking up the hobby of Geocaching. I've been a few times, but always went with a friend and used his account for signing logs. I just finished signing up for my own account and I'm thinking about buying a GPS. A hobby of mine is watch collecting so when I seen that the Fenix can do Geocaching and I became very interested. I'm curious how the Fenix performs as Geocaching GPS. None of the Fenix reviews I've read have really went into much detail about Geocaching so hopefully someone here has first hand experience with it. Along with the watch, I'll be using my Android phone and the app. I figure betweeen those two devices, I should be pretty well covered. IF the Fenix does ok any. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
