I really like the google earth interface and I was thinking, wouldn't it be nice if I could see which caches I have visited? So I log into the forums to see if there is a way to do it and I find this nifty toolset! Thanks a bunch! This is one of those things I wish I could do for myself, and for those who do this stuff regularly is actually pretty easy, but for me would have been very difficult to do on my own. So many thanks to you! I am a happpy googleearthcacher. THe only thing I might have done different would be to make the found icon match the one you get on the geocaching site. (i.e. the little rubbermaid with the check next to it) just for consistency sake. But beggars can't be choosers and I'm sure I'll grow to like the dark black checked circle just as much.

I use both interchangeably now, mostly for the map plotting option. I asked about being able to submit a cache using UTM's but it didn't sound hopeful, so you have to get used to converting if you want to create your own caches anyway. elifish

I think the stickers are designed for ammo can use, they fit perfectly. But to avoid confusion perhaps they should be touted as ammo can stickers? elifish

I'm glad you created it, geocachers come in all shapes and sizes, with and without clothes. Now I wonder how many of the "cruisers" are geocachers? Yipes! elifish

Quote: "Two cannibals eating a clown. One says to the other: 'Does this taste funny to you?'" To add to the clown humor... What did the clown say when the fire marshal asked him about the cicus fire? -It was in tents (intense) Okay, a joke that is somewhat related to geocaching: What is the difference between beer nuts and deer nuts? Beer nuts are a 1.39, deer nuts are under a buck. elifish

Is there a locationless shoe tree cache yet? There should be, I've seen at least two trees and now two more in this thread. elifish

-when your friends complain about the crap they got for Christmas, you ask if you can have it. -you host a geocaching event -you drive an additional ten miles to the next freeway exit, just so you can drive back to the last one you missed -you stay up posting on the discussion boards (ah, that's not me! elifish

Upcoming geocache troubles in Marin County
elifish replied to Big Doggie and Lil Pup's topic in West and Southwest
I emailed the generic email on the Marin County Open Space districts website. I asked what the offical stance on geocaches on their property was and asked for a contact name, title and email. Hopefully they will respond and I will post the results here. In the meantime, the website I found is: http://www.co.marin.ca.us/depts/PK/Main/os/ospolicies.cfm the email I used was: parksoscult@co.marin.ca.us I advise anyone interested to do the same. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this. elifish -
Upcoming geocache troubles in Marin County
elifish replied to Big Doggie and Lil Pup's topic in West and Southwest
I work in government and I often have to obtain permission to access different properties, and Open Space Districts are often the hardest hurdle to jump. LOTS of paperwork and approvals, so it doesn't surprise me, BUT... I do think we as geocachers should talk to them, or at least open a form of communication, much like the caches in caves discussion that has been going on. Maybe we can find out what they think about geocaching and why. It may not be that they are worried about trampling up the land, it might be with the possible spread of Sudden Oak Death, or something quite valid. elifish -
I tried to find one, but it was really buried, nothing a shovel wouldn't help, but I forgot my shovel. I'd do it again, but next time I'll bring snowshoes and a shovel! elifish

I went to one on Christmas, not a good idea. Alot of mourners, I felt bad having so much fun. I tried to be quiet and respectful, and will try to avoid graveyards on holidays from now on. I also agree with avoiding any current funerals/burials. As far as boondocky graveyard caches, go for it, the people buried there probably haven't had visitors in a long time, make 'em happy! elifish

I agree it would be more "suspicious" to geo-muggles, but I found a multi one that was locked and really enjoyed the challege, so to a geocacher= good, non cacher= not so good. elifish

"I think what the problem is all about is not the logo it's self, but,......that to have items with the logo on them cost money & whoever makes them has to make money for time & effort, material.ect. So in other words the logo is making someone else money." So what if they don't have the logo, but a local logo? Is just using www.geocaching.com infringement? What about just the word geocaching? I'm wondering, because yes, us west coast folks do need these, and maybe I can get some made, but what is ligit? elifish

If there can be geocaches inside businesses where you ask the "gatekeeper" for the cache (I know of at least one), why not make a paddle cache where the "gatekeeper" is the boat place? I've even seen a cache that says, order the #5 special. People seem to like the cache as well as the #5 special. GO for it. elifish

I used to use only UTM, but geocaching cured me of it, though I would like an option to post new caches in both UTM and LAt/Long. Knowing both systems only makes you a better cacher! elifish

No NO Yes, Mostly I'm lazy, I only post a no find if I don't eventually find it and don't see myself going back to find it at some point or if I really think it isn't there anymore. No Yes, once on one that was particularly challenging. We went back three times! elifish

I also disagree about moving a cache, but only if it is dire circumstances! Uncle Alaska and I found a cache that had been placed near a stream. The owners posted that they doubted the water level would ever get that high and well, you guessed it, the water level does get that high! We found the cache upside down and soaking wet. We then stole the cache overnight and dried it out. When we returned we looked for a nearby hiding spot and we took a reading. We emailed the owners with the status of their cache suggesting that they change the posted coordinates to where we had placed it, and we posted the new coordinates on the cache page itself in our logs. The owners haven't updated the coordinates or replied back and they live like 250 miles away. Irresponsible cache owners! Grrrr. It's been found at least once since we moved it, but once the logs get further down the page, I think people are going to log alot of no finds. Cyber smack to irresponsible cache owners! elifish

Your original contents were okay. Some people try to put really cool stuff in at first to reward first time finders, but it isn't required, since most caches will diminish over time anyway. If I put just average stuff to start out with, I make sure the cache site itself is worth the visit. My first cache has pretty lame contents too, you'll get a feel for it as you keep stashing. elifish

I sure hope you post some paddle caches, I'll look for them and maybe even take a trip up north to go visit some. I have one planned for Trinidad Bay, you just reminded me that I need to work on that before I have to head north for work for awhile. Keep 'em coming! elifish

I went to find a cache with my sister and my niece. We got to the cache and it was the same cache my roomate had dropped a travel bug into a month earlier. The weird thing about it? The cache was 250 miles from home and I had no idea when I went to it, that it was the cache he had told me he finally dropped his travel bug into. Small world indeed. elifish

At first I really thought they were lame, though they are starting to grow on me. I agree that learning something or finding something unique is imprtant. Virtuals that ask me to name something inane, like how many light fixtures are on the ceiling or when was the fire hydrant made are pretty dumb. I guess my biggest peave is that when I donwload a bunch of caches, I don't know which ones are virtuals, then I go hunting around to find something that isn't there! Once I can figure out a method to distinguish them from regular caches, I will be much happier. elifish

I for one love the pocket change, where's george dollars, non george dollars etc. Excellent leave for those of us who still have to use a laundromat! There was once some true geoswag up here on the northcoast: someone left the end of a joint. Not to bright of thinking, considering that kids are involved in this sport. Most people up here weren't too happy about it, though some people were probably bummed that they didn't get there soon enough! I guess it was almost guaranteed to happen in Humboldt county sooner or later! elifish

I know this is way late in coming, but I just went paintballing for the first time and I definately think it could be incorparated into goecaching, though in abit different of a manner... An unbiased referee type could hide one or more geocaches and two teams could them try to find the stash and return it to their home base. The other team trys to stop them from doing this. It is like capture the flag, but the flag is only to be found by GPS. That or have an event cache where people try to find the cache while others try to ambush them with paintball markers. elifish

I just found a travelling micro cache like the one you want to start. (see waypoint # GC24BD) It was only a geocache, not a travel bug. The owner updates the coordinates when he/she knows where it is at. This is fine if a seeker wants to travel the distance to get the cache, but otherwise the cache really acts more like a travelbug (i.e it is only found by someone already going to visit that cache). I liked it as a cache though. in that when you find it you get to log two finds, one for the micro cache and one for the cache it was in. It seems like one or the other might be better, but then again having a travel bug tag on the cache might help people to understand it or make it last longer. I think it could really go either way and not really do much harm. Good luck with the cache/ travel bug wahtever it becomes! elifish
