  1. Hello, I was a ftf for a cache up by spicer reservoir last week. However to log the find I need to find some type of cache that was created in 2000. Does anyone know of something in the area I can use to make the log?

The cache is Aught to Eight Challenge cache

    http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...8d-72b14728807f

Getting ready to post my note on this cache. Can't help you yet on ideas for 2000 because the one and only that I have found in 2000 was the "Un-original Stash" in Oregon.

May have to do a search of the forums or see if there is some other way to search for old caches. I did do a quick search of one of my GSAK databases that includes 1300 caches (call me king of overkill) including the nearest 500 caches from Lake Alpine, Sonora, and my home. The oldest one out of these was 5/2001.

  2. Received an advertisement flyer for a resort that offers a Geocaching Challenge for $269 per couple which includes 1 night lodging, half-day GPS rental, half-day bike rental for two, two power bars, sports drinks and souvenir cache treasures.

I was obviously interested in checking this out more closely. Found one cacher that was introduced to geocaching this way in 9/2007 according to his log. That cacher now has 137 finds. In his log the cacher mentions that he found 2 caches that weren't published, and of course, the one listed on GC.com where I found his log.

Is anyone else aware of this or something similar? At first, I was wondering how this fit with the non-commercial nature of geocaching. Not that it bothers me; just found it interesting.

Would like to hear thoughts and comments regarding this.

  3.

    FREEDOM FOR NASCARFAM!!!

Hey, he WILL be free - just attired in a dumb looking orange suit and wearing stupid looking feathers for a while. But free..... :)

I think this attire would pretty much disqualify NascarFam from finding the Muggle Training Caches in Merced if not all urban caches in the area.

Speaking of Muggle Training I am going to change the subject a bit:

I got a compliment this weekend at the event regarding the logging of my DNFs. It would be interesting to hear some feedback on this issue. Case in point, look at Muggle Training The Fountain then look at the other new nearby caches and ask yourself why this cache wasn't looked for.

As you can see, I am quite proud of my DNF's which I just counted this morning. I am even prouder of some of my FTDNFs but I haven't been diligent about keeping track of them. The only one I can remember off the top of my head is Jo Hates Ivy!

  4. Also, I should add that paperless caching and GSAK have little to nothing to do with event caches, which is the main type of cache mentioned by the OP.

Yeah, it's at events where it seems to be the biggest "issue".

-- You want to log "Will Attend" far enough in advance to help with the head count but you don't want to drop in trackables because that means you can't really move them anywhere else until the event.

-- You often want to get the trackables into the event before you log "Attended" so the people who took them from the event don't feel the need to wait for you to log your "Attended".

For the most part on regular caches it isn't as much of an issue because you don't have a large number of people logging these Notes in a relatively short time frame.

As a cache owner, I delete any "drop notes" if they were done as part of a "oops, forgot to drop it in while logging a find" moment, but if it was a previous finder making a return visit and dropping something in I leave it alone.

Heh, don't get me started on the people who don't seem to realize you can drop multiple trackables with one log and instead log eight consecutive "drop" notes. :D

Sounds like you are in store for a never ending education session because most cachers will not read this forum or care to take the extra time to delete.

I suppose you have noticed the little tally of all the "Will Attend" & "Maintenance Logs" etc listed just above the logs. Guess this only gives you the # of caching names and not the # of people.

  5. OK. I am going to go Caching in Merced on Saturday. any must find caches there?

Have to give you a least one cache suggestion to really make it a reachable baker's dozen:

    1. Happy To Be First 5

    2. Laura's fountain

    3. Photom rocks to 3000 (Placed just right at 16 months ago; now at 5000+)

    4. "4" in the ABC 123 Series (Not your typical hide!)

    5. Now you see it, now you don't

    6. Got Glass II (Atwater) (If you are up to the challenge!)

    7. Delhi Delight (Regular size that could use some TB's)

Guess I found more than 1.

    Happy Caching

  6. Let's be honest with ourselves.

I suspect that the OP's endgame WAS to have this cache archived. WHile he did not name the cache in question, he gave so much information that it was easily identified. The discussion was never about the issue, it was always about the specific cache.

It is so wonderfully refreshing and unusual in these forums that the non-accusatory (is that a word?) word "suspect" was chosen. Usually a person would have seen the phrase "I know" or "It is obvious."

One nice thing about the typed language: It can't drip with sarcasm; the reader has to draw it out based on context, their own opinions, and their own frame of referance.

I wholeheartedly agree with the last statement! The cache was unique in my geocaching finds so I had to discuss the specific cache. That cache is one of the only ones that I have seen that made me a bit uncomfortable about the how the game is portrayed. Won't mention the other cache because I would hate to set off another firestorm and besides someone just placed a needs maintenance note on it so the reviewer will probably take care of it soon.

So if I am reading your post correctly you are saying that your original purpose for starting this thread was to have the cache in question archived. Why didn't you have the good manners and intestinal fortitude to simply post an SBA on the cache and be done with it?

What I meant to say was:

I am glad sbell111, stopped short of directly accusing me by saying "I suspect that the OP's endgame WAS to have this cache archived." By saying "suspect" sbell111 is saying that based on HIS/HER interpretation of my statements and the situation that I must have wanted the cache archived.

So I will say again in plain English: "I was quite suprised to find the cache archived about four hours after the OP. I honestly wasn't intending that, but I guess I would have to say I agree with the decision."

In fact, I sent a PM to the reviewer in order to find out how he found out so fast. He quickly answered and know I will be more careful about what I say in the forums. Turns out Groundspeak must have hired some of the unemployed KGB. (This last sentance is meant as a joke.) :D

  8. If you think the distance for the owner breaks the guidelines, I disagree: Maintainable distances will vary from cacher to cacher.

If you think the fact that the phone book was defaced in order to create the cache, I might agree: it depends on how the log is attached & if it makes that page unusable. Of course, people have been known to tear out entire pages from phone books... (Which isn't really an excuse, but...)

If you think the guidelines are being broken in some other way, you have not specified.

    Warning: Insufficient Input!

I agree that the distance isn't an issue. Guess I just threw that in since I had taken the trouble to look at his previous hides.

What bothered me the most was the glued in log covering a good portion of the listings on that page. Also the log was clearly identified as a "Geocache Log." Maybe if it was only taped at the top to allow access to the listings, I would not have felt the need to post or if it had been on the inside cover.

I was quite suprised to find the cache archived about four hours after the OP. I honestly wasn't intending that, but I guess I would have to say I agree with the decision. Will have to see about stopping by to remove the log if possible next time I am in the area.

And to save some work for somebody here is the link: Got Gas?

  9. We found a cache in our area recently and I would like to get some input from others in the forums.

The cache was placed in a phone book at a gas station. The hint was something like " 'X' marks the spot." The second part of the hint gave a large number. As soon as we pulled up to the phone booth, I spotted a fairly large X marked on the bottom of the phone book hanging in the phone booth. Sure enough, the large number given in the hint corresponded to the page number in the telephone book. Glued onto a certain page was the log clearly marked as a Geocache log.

At first I was impressed by the "unique" hide. After contemplating, I am not sure that this is a hide that would fit the guidelines. The cache appears to be placed about a 5 hour drive from the majority of the owners other hides.

Any other thoughts on this or will this type now become "the rage" after being posted here.

  10. It was pointed out that if I have CVC Tag!!! on my watch list, I better turn it off for a couple days... Very Funny. As the 'owner', you can't turn a blind eye to the hundreds of email messages that you get after someone takes it (out of bounds) to a 'MEGA EVENT'. Oh, someone is going to pay.

It will be interesting to see the surveillance photo's.

I think Bill is going to have a really hard time finding an impartial jury for this one (at least in the geocaching community). Hope you have already deleted my CVC tag log because I just edited it to destroy the evidence.

  11. The earplug holders look like your best bet, but if that isn't what you are looking for you might be able to send a Private Message to jdhendlerphoto. We found one of her caches that had the perfect ammo can. She may be able to tell you where she got it.

  12. I am in the same boat with Magellan Customer Service and about on the same time line. I have been waiting for about 2 months for a new USB cable and have called for information regarding it about 6 times now. Thank you for your post regarding this and I am going to call again on monday using your info. I think all of us Geocachers who have been in the run around with Magellan should get together and try to get some results. I also know that the next GPSr I get is not going to be Magellan.

You would think that 6 calls in 2 months would "elevate" an order to a higher status. In my case it took a call to the Corp office to "elevate" the order.

And, yes, it would be nice if everyone who has problem with tech or customer support would elevate their requests to the number that I listed above {(408) 615-5100 }. Like "oldsarge" said in the other forum of this title, I like the Magellan style and would hate to switch, but with support like this .........

  13. Has anyone else had big problems with magellan recently. The unit needs to be serviced or replace which they agree too becuse its under warranty. In order to recieve warranty replacement i have to give a credit card number to someone in India named Dominic , this is wrong and wonder if anyone else has a similar view. Send me a prepaid shipping label and ill send the unit back and then you can repair or replace it. Like how its done in the real world.

Read the Forum Discussion with the same title a little farther down the column or at Magellan Customer Service

I don't mean to scare you but....... I would be surprised if you even got a return shipping label anytime soon. It seems to take constant hounding to get anything done.

Make copies of everything you receive from them before you ship your unit back. (I think it is standard to have to send the unit back, but don't know why they would need credit card info.)

If you don't get your shipping label or have any other run arounds try the "Corporate Number" listed on the above forum. It seemed to get me results quickly.

    Good luck.

  14. Well, the cable finally got to me!!!! Called the Corporate Number on Tuesday and got the cable on Friday!

Now, I will never now whether it was this special phone call or whether my two months of persistent badgering finally paid off. (I suspect it was the call to Corporate Office.) I challenged them to listen to all of my calls since August for Quality Assurance Purposes.

So, if you want results maybe you too can try this: (408) 615-5100 and picked the option for Press Relations/ Donations.

  15. I realize you are pursuing a warranty replacement and are just reporting on the difficulty so far. But...if you need it, third party Explorist cables are available at PC-Mobile.

Does "third party" mean that they make their own and don't get them through Magellan? My SD card reader is working ok right now. Might pursue this option if the power cord portion fails. Couldn't find telephone # for PC-Mobile so I couldn't find out if they were in stock.

Update on OP: I received a call from the "shipping department" today. The person stated that he couldn't figure out how tech support had messed this up, but he was overnighting the cable to me today. He even clarified my e-mail so he could send me the tracking number. Problem is that was 9am this morning and I have not received the tracking number yet. More to follow.....

  16. I have not searched the forums in depth, but it appears to be the general consensus that Magellan Customer Service leaves a whole lot to be desired. (I tend to understate problems.)

I started pursueing a new USB cable for my Explorist 400 on 8/21/07 while on a road trip. I still don't have the cable despite multiple calls to tech support. It was still under warrenty when I started this ordeal.

After 3-4 weeks of getting conflicting stories, I purchased a card reader for my SD card so that I can at least download onto that. The cable still works for charging but now that is even getting a little touchy and depends on how it is held.

Needless to say, I am now getting more desperate for my cable. I ordered a cable online, but cancelled the order because it was backordered from Magellan. At some point in Sept. Magellan admitted that it was backordered even though it had previously been shipped 3 or 4 times without reaching me.

I finally tried calling the customer support number because even the supervisors at tech support were making promises that did not come to pass. Customer support listened to my complaint but gave me several of the same stories tech support gave. They did give me a # for "Corp Office" though so that I could lodge a complaint.

I called (408) 615-5100 and picked the option for Press Relations/ Donations. The person I talked to said that it really wasn't her job, but she was willing to take notes and send an email to tech support that would elevate my case to a more urgent status. (You think with my multiple calls asking for the supervisor or the supervisor would have already elevated it to that status.)

Purpose of post is to give other with this problem a route to get around the endless circle of tech support. She did say that she has received other calls like this.

I will let you know how my case turns out. ;)

  17. What you saw was probably digital fish. Follow this link to learn more: http://www.geofish.net/

Basically, it is a trackable signature item left in caches by a San Francisco Bay Area cacher. We have found 6 or 7 of these in our caching around the Central Valley of California. They are only trackable on the above site.

  19. All I can say is if you get a machine with Vista on it, keep your XP license. I recently bought a laptop with Vista Home Premium installed and it was a dog. I had to wipe the drive and reinstall with XP. MUCH faster. Of course, my Ubuntu partition sees a lot more action!

My Dad is trying to get me interested in Ubuntu. Any idea if Map Send Topo 3D would work on that OS?

  20. My laptop has Vista. Magellan's MapSend can recognize my GPS however, the Magellan's GeoCache Manager does not. It thinks the GPS unit is an external hard drive. I think we all will have to wait until everyone updates all the drivers to make them compatible with Vista

My MapSend Topo 3D would not install to my new Windows Vista laptop, but downloading MapSend Lite (link through Groundspeak or Magellan) works but has no detail map. Since I discovered MapSend Lite, I never use Geocache Manager.

Do a pocket query and open the .gpx file with MapSend Lite. You can than save to your gps as a .gs file. You will be amazed at how much info you now download to the GPS. I have been so impressed with this that I haven't even checked out GSAK.

On Vista I have to have GPS turned on when I plug in the USB port, otherwise it does not recognize the device.

DO I GET MAD AT MICROSOFT OR MAGELLAN FOR NOT BEING COMPATIBLE WITH VISTA?????? (Magellan tech support stated that they were working on making it compatible with Visa. Most likely as a whole seperate program.)

  21. YES - save our seats at Mountain Mikes! Will BOGA make his way down??

Very scary to think about going so far South. Don't people fall off the earth when they travel that far??

Looks like the very thought triggers intense dread and real trauma manifested by uncontrolled repetative finger movement. Hmmm.... wonder if I could suggest any therapy.
