  1. I use the course in my boat, you can project the route then if you deviate, you know how to get back on track. It is also useful when you use the sight and go feature on a Vista so you know how far off you are and can keep track of what you used for your starting points. It's not a sport unless there is something dead in the back of the truck when you get home.
  2. I love my Vista. I have only played with the alt a little, no real need yet, but it seems to work well. I really like the electronic compass, will still point the way to the cache when stopped, dont have to move like other GPS units without one in it. I have also had a Legend, a yellow etrex (still have this one), an Eagle Explorer and have used a Garmin 3+. The Vista is my fav of all of these. The legend was very nice, but the compass, alt, and additional memory make it worth the extra $$. Things I dont like about the Vista: i dont like the battery cover design, just seems cheap, but no trouble with it yet, you have to recalibrate the compass every time you change batteries, easy, but a pain, and the biggest dislike is no external antena. I have roads and rec for software, but I am going to buy the new metroguide when it comes out. Overall, it is a great unit. As for accessories, I have a combo data/power cable to hook up a lap top, power cable, data cable, handle bar mounts and a suction cup windshield mount. Probably the best advice is to read the manual completely when you get the unit, lots to learn, but is pretty easy. 3. I was considering that here too, but access is limited during almost 1/2 the summer due to it being a nesting ground for geese and other waterfowl. A twist on this idea is on the same lake, there are trees that are submerged except for about 10 ft of the tops of them, with some camo techniques, it could be interesteing to get to by boat, is a challenge just getting back there in a boat. It's not a sport unless there is something dead in the back of the truck when you get home.
  4. The area I have in mind would almost be a locked box chained to a tree, but I am exploring ways to make it less obvious. Using the web to get clues is to enhance the accessability to all, not to all who can hike. All clues would be able to be found with very little exploring, and what there would be, is going to be easy enough for a wheelchair to get too. My target finders are those that can't hike of road, due to physical limitations. The main purpose is to get my grandpa out of his chair where he has been rotting away for years due to health and vision problems. The ideal location may be a specially designed handicapped accesssable fishing pond put in by the county, I believe that they will allow it and encourage it here. 5. I am thinking of placing a cache with a combination lock on it. You would find the clues for the combination from other sites on the net and in person to get the numbers. The idea behind this is to make it VERY easy to get to for handicapped access and locked so it won't be plundered. 6. Next time I am in Port Orchard, I am there too! Sounds like a fun one. It's not a sport unless there is something dead in the back of the truck when you get home.
  7. I have a V65 magna, lots of power and lots of fun to ride. I may use it on a few ths summer, but will probably use my 4 wheelers more for caching. It's not a sport unless there is something dead in the back of the truck when you get home.
  8. it may just be the amount of time i have been awake (almost 30 hours) but the first thing that popped into my mind was Viagra and a handle bar mount for an etrex. No extra weight and self colapsing, as well as muti-purpose. It's not a sport unless there is something dead in the back of the truck when you get home.
  9. I love my Vista. The compass is something I thought was no biggie...until I used it. Really nice for the unit to work without moving. Also, it has features that allow you to use the compass to set a course, and will keep you very close to the original course without having to input coordinates. My only complaint with the compass on the Vista is that I haven't figured out how to get it to show the direction in degrees yet, just gives a heading. As for the altimiter, I have only played with it, as in finding out how tall a hill is for sledding and same with driving up a mountain. I firmly believe I excede the maximum allowable size to use the jumpmaster program, but it looks really cool. With the glide calculator built in, I can see a lot of uses for hang gliding/flying as well. the color screen is not an issue to me, at least not as much as having a much smaller unit. I have mine hooked up to a PC, and use Roads and Rec, but am getting metroguide for it as well. Only thing that I have noticed with a comp hook up is that new laptops are leaving off the serial port. Oh, with the software interface and mapping, the Vista will do street level adress lookup with metroguide as long as the map needed is loaded, won't auto route like a V, but the smaller unit is wort the trade off. I use mine in my car, boat, truck, 4 wheelers and bike. I have handle bar mounts, as well as the windshield mount and have very little trouble with the mounts. This is my 3rd in the etrex line, and all have been rugged and reliable, but I love the Vista out of all of them! There are a few things I don't like about it though. I don't like the flimsy cover over the interface port, it is a rubber flap (I have had no trouble with it, just see it as a weak spot). I wish you could put on an external antenna. I also see the click stick as a weak point, very handy, and no trouble yet, just see a potential there. Oh, some trash the reception, but I get a 16 ft accuracy with 9 sats in my house sitting on my computer desk!! Hope this helps. Oh, the rebate is back!!! 10. WOW, this is almost like a brag session at a GEO-anon meeting!! Just kidding, I have peaked at 4 so far but no twins. A Vista, Legend, Yellow Etrex and a Eagle Explorer. Down the the Vista and Yellow, for now. It's not a sport unless there is something dead in the back of the truck when you get home.
  11. http://www.absoluteponds.com/stone-covers.htm there is a huge fake hollow rock! It's not a sport unless there is something dead in the back of the truck when you get home.
  12. that sure looks like a box kite to me. cool one, but still to good to be true. wouldn't trade my etrex for one of em. It's not a sport unless there is something dead in the back of the truck when you get home.
  13. -speedometer on my 4 wheelers and boat -navigation during fog or night on my boat -marking fishing areas on foot and the boat -hunting to do waypoints to camp, kill site, etc. -to summon help in the mountains and on highways, has been nice to be able to give a dispatcher a 30ft accuracy to an accident -answer the famous cop question "do you know how fast you were going" and being able to tell them within 1/10th of a mph (took the GPS word and got a tickets for 13.6 over posted) -finding boundries to public land -marking a parking spot at a mall to find the car when we were done shopping -giving my wife directions to where we were using coordinates when out of town -to get a good idea of how tall hills are for sled riding, and the speed we got up to -get a rough distance for sighting in rifles for hunting It's not a sport unless there is something dead in the back of the truck when you get home.
  14. I know this isnt about caching, but I need to find out this info. What movie did a man order milk in a dirty glass in? Thanks for tolerating this one! It's not a sport unless there is something dead in the back of the truck when you get home.
  15. The easiest way to enter a waypoint on the yellow is to hold down the enter button on the side for a few seconds, then scroll down and enter the different coordinates. And don't knock the basic etrex, all of the rest of the line just have more features, that one will be very reliable and useful. The BLM and forest service as well as some of the game and fish dept here issue the basic yellow etrex. I have one also, and liked it. I did upgrade to a Legend and a Vista, but sold the Legend and kept the yellow and the Vista. You really should take a few hours and read the manual through and do it on the move as it describes. All will become clear! Have fun and start saving for all the new toys that come with the "cheap" entertainment! It's not a sport unless there is something dead in the back of the truck when you get home.
  16. I have found a couple of 1/1, and not one of them would be able to be accessed by a wheelchair, they are up until the last 50 to 100 feet, then require getting off a trail to a hiding place. I have worked with disabled adults for almost 10 years, and to have one that is truly accessable, it would be very easy for it to be trashed. I am thinking of making a truly accessable one, with a combination lock on it and secured. It would have multiple stages, some on the internet for clues, including searching for the combination. With this there would also be clues to be found by searching. This would be a mental cache more than physical. However, around here, this time of year a 1/1 can be nearly impossible due to extreme mud, snow and dramatic temp fluctuations. 17. And one time....at band camp. It's not a sport unless there is something dead in the back of the truck when you get home.
  18. I have the Vista. The compass really is cool to have integrated in the unit. When you are going under a preselected speed, the ele compass takes over, therefore, when you are standing still, it will still point to the destination where my legend had to be moved a bit to get it to change the display to correct. I am not sure about the mag, but the Vista will also do address lookup from the unit when using metroguide software. Not turn by turn, but close. I am sure that you will have fun with any you buy, welcome to the insanity. It's not a sport unless there is something dead in the back of the truck when you get home.
  19. Mine was as simple as making sure that it is level, if the gps is not level, the compass is not accurate, and it doesnt take much out of kilter to get it to stop working all together, if you watch the screen it will say hold level when it is not working properly. It shows the wording in the lower corners of the compass window. My guess is that is what is wrong with it. When it is going faster than set for compass and goes to GPS compass, it will work until you slow down again. 20. i can get the maps at a local book store, or sporting goods store. the hoops in this case seem good, at least they didnt say no. when you put the mark on the map, watch the datum that the map is in, and change your gps to the same for coordinates. i have a brunton eclipse gps compass that makes this very easy to do. look at it as a lesson and opprotunity to learn and spread the word about the sport. a local reporter had never heard of it, and was not open at all to learning about it as he thought it would encourage people to be sneaky and maybe train people to do illegal acts. changed his mind when other papers in the area printed stories about it, but still wont print anything about it. keep up with the work, it will pay off and is awesome to see the first find pop up on your email!! 21. My AOL IM name is wyoduckhunting1 and it is on most of the time. I have had a Legend, use a Vista now and also a basic yellow Etrex. If you want to get in touch, let me know. You can get me on IM or email. Andy It's not a sport unless there is something dead in the back of the truck when you get home.
  22. I currently have a yellow and a Vista, and just sold a Legend. All are nice units, but I love the Vista. i really like the mapping capability as well as the electronic compass and alt. The additional memory is really nice also. For software I use Roads and Rec, and am going to buy Metroguide. It's not a sport unless there is something dead in the back of the truck when you get home.
  23. I know what you mean by confusing descriptions, when I first started working in a psych hospital, I thought Bi-polar meant a Penguin that went both ways! It's not a sport unless there is something dead in the back of the truck when you get home.
  24. Vista- 16ft on average. Yellow- 22ft, Legend- 18 It's not a sport unless there is something dead in the back of the truck when you get home.
  25. Base maps are lame, you need to upgrade software really quick, or you wont be happy with the performance. At least that is the expirience I had with my Legend and Vista. Still use the yellow basic also, a good unit. It's not a sport unless there is something dead in the back of the truck when you get home.
