  1. "no actual harm caused by their placement???"" The actual harm, if not disturbing indigenous/beneficial plants and/or landscaping, is the potential harm to our ability to continue to cache in areas. All we need to do is offend ONE member of the Department of Wildlife, Park Ranger, BLM, etc., either by breaking one of our rules, one of theirs, or through poor placement, to lose the privilege of having ANY caching activity. This is what happened with the East Bay Park District in the Bay Area. They do not allow caching, period. If I see a cache in violation of any of the rules, Groundspeak's, a park, or in poor judgement, I will report it to protect the future of our game. "Me thinks" we all benefit from reporting violations and we are focused on the right problem.
  2. I had a similar problem with my Vista. Mine would shut off every time I tried using the back light. I was able to correct it with a master reset. The master reset will erase any saved data in the unit so please be sure to back up any data you do not want to lose if possible. 1.Turn off the unit. 2.While the unit is off press the Enter button. 3.While holding Enter press Page also. 4.Continue holding Enter and Page and turn the unit on. The unit should ask you Do you really want to erase all user data? Scroll down to yes and hit enter. This will clear out everything from the unit. I would also recommend updating the software in the unit, if you haven't already. You'll need to download a program called WebUpdater to update your software. http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp
  3. I was having a similar issue. Have you tried a master reset? It will erase everything off your unit, but won't touch the memory card. 4. Hi Chrysalides and Red90: THANK YOU, that worked! Interesting as this was the format which Cache Sense has always used. Perhaps it changed with one of their software updates. I did check their forums first, and found nothing specific to this topic. I will send them a message about the issue. Sincerely, UPSgirl
  5. I have an issue similar to Drebbin's: Until recently, I have been able to consistently upload field notes from my BB (after exporting from cachesense -- which I have been using for about three years). Now, I consistently cannot upload my field notes, at all, from any source. I've tried copying the file to my computer from the BB, with no better luck. Of the 51 logs/field notes I have from today, 0 upload. Here are examples from today, again this is a .txt file on my hard drive: GCW1XR Land of the Gnomes,2011-05-07T15:17:11Z,Didn't find it,"" GCGP1K Big Green Monster,2011-05-07T14:55:06Z,Found it,"TFTC glad it was the big tube!" Any troubleshooting suggestions? It has been at least a month that this stopped working. I was hoping with the gc.com update, it might have corrected.
  6. "Crappy"? Would that be name calling? Opting to make negative, wildly inaccurate guesses about my hides also shows a certain level of immaturity. If you'll check my profile you'll see I don't really do micros. I have one active one, and it serves to poke fun at micros. ALWAYS Lame Ammo cans and Lock & Locks are my thing. You should try them some time. They're a hoot! Clearly, "crappy" was not aimed at you. Crappy is a type of cache container. Hence, I didn't stoop to your level of immature name calling of my fellow cachers. If YOU'll check my profile, you will see I don't have a single micro -- I prefer 5-gallon buckets. YOU should try them some time. They're a hoot.
  7. Name calling is name calling no matter what names you choose. Also shows a certain level of immaturity. Let me guess, you buy a bunch of those crappy magnetic key holders for your micros? They cost more than 88 cents. The white pill containers do well in my area, and every single magnetic key holder has had a wet (or recently wet) log in it. Magnetic key holders should be banned. I'd rather a cache placer uses a container that is waterproof, paid for or no.
  8. The video clip with the Dave Ulmer interview can be found on the DVD "The Complete Guide to Geocaching". It also has interviews with Jeremy Irish and Jon Stanley (a.k.a. Moun10Bike). The DVD is copyright 2004 and produced by XSnrg Pictures. www.geocachingvideo.com
  9. Is it still possible to ask for an avatar design? I'd like one I can also use for a sig item, so I'd like my GC ID on it. I'd also like to pay tribute to my most loyal geocaching companions: my dogs. I'm constantly being asked if they are wolf-hybrids (they aren't) so if there was something with a wolf-ish look, that'd be fabulous. Thanks for your consideration! UPSgirl
  10. Pelvic Organ Prolapse??? Here's a link to a lot of possibilities, but none of them really seem to fit: http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/pop
  11. DocDiTTo -- THANK YOU! Those are some fantastic ideas! My brain wheels are really turning now! I'm going to look for the black reflective tape. The first place I thought of, is not going to work because there is no place to park legally. I've got other ideas, of course!
  12. Thanks Jester! I wouldn't have thought of the laser pointer. My all time favorite night cache (granted I haven't done yours yet) is not that far from you. It is fantastic. Clearly a LOT of planning went into it: By the Light of the Silvery Moon (a Night Cache) http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...1f-cc5a9988721f And if you are in that area, you might as well grab this one too. A "NIGHT CACHE" with no name! http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...49-88cfa8957eab
  13. AH!!!! A Zorker!!!! This is an EXCELLENT suggestion and is the one that I was going to make myself. I've heard from a number of folks who had difficulty making their way back out to their vehicle because they were so intent on following the tacks IN that they didn't pay attention to the actual path they took. Red tacks in and white tacks out makes things much easier if the path to the cache is very long or convoluted. LOL, I've made that same mistake! And on another night cache I was grateful for the tacks out. THANK YOU to everyone for excellent suggestions/recommendations!!! Keep 'em coming. I'm going to scope out a place now I think may be a good place. I did order a LOT of fire tacks, white and "flame orange". I'm going to experiment with them in my local park (not for placing a cache, but just to practice with the tacks and muggle-proofing). Hopefully, I'll be able to successfully place more than one night cache!! I'm so excited!
  14. I just found some great instructions from eHow.com and at http://tripcyclone.wordpress.com/2009/01/0...e-night-caches/ I bought some refective spray paint for re-doing the address at the curb...think I'll experiment with that too.
  15. There is a serious lack of night caches in my area (none), and I think they are tons of fun. I would like to create some. I am looking for advice, tips, traps to avoid, etc., for anyone who has advice to offer for creating night caches. (Some of the neighborhood parks are open until 10:00 PM)
  16. I started out in Bluebirds, then switched to Girl Scouts. My troop wasn't very active, but my best friend's troop was. I'm still friends with some of my former troop members. My favorite GS memory was a huge camping outing where we slept outside, under the stars. All-in-all, Scouting was a good experience. It is amazing how many people don't "leave the place cleaner than you found it." My last camping trip, we got the last available spot. After I settled in, I took a walk around and discoved the hunters had left eight deer legs, organs, and part of a hide behind. My dog Max had fun carrying the legs around. Blech!
  17. If you haven't heard of this, check this forum: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=189072 Is there anything like this in California/West and Southwest? I'm sure we've got someone capable, and I'd love to contribute (and use the info)!
  18. Sorry I didn't see your post earlier. The pups and I would have liked caching with you. We love your area! The beer at Hood Canal Brewery is yummy....and the dogs LOVE running off-leash on the tree farms.
