I can't get my Etrex Vista C to work with my new notebook which has the Windows 8 operating system. I tried Gsak, Easy GPS and Garmin BaseCamp. I spent 2 1/2 hours on the phone with the Garmin Support....with NO SUCCESS. Using remote access we installed the latest USB driver. I tried a new USB cable. Both the old and new cable work perfectly with my old notebook running Vista operting system. It may be that when they developed the USB driver for Windows 8 they did not test it on the Vista C. The Vista C is no longer supported.
As an experiment I brought our Garmin Nuvi in from the car and was immediately able to download waypoints into it using Gsak.
So, my questions are:
1. Has anyone used a Vista C with Windows 8?
2. How about the Etrex Vista CHX with Windows 8? That is current and supported. If that works I may purchase one.

I always found the trackable's history button on a cache page a very useful feature. Did it go away by mistake?

We have had two caches in Lock&Lock boxes that were opened by critters and the swag scattered over the ground. We are quite sure that the perpetrators were raccoons. The scratches on the latches were about right for raccoon claws. We don’t think that there was any type of food item in the caches, but of course an unenlightened Geocacher could have placed something like that in the cache after our last inspection visit. (Don’t tell me that the solution is to use an Amo can because park rules in this area prohibit that) Has anyone come up with a successful critter repellant for Geocaches? I am going to experiment with spraying a cache with some stuff that is sold to discourage a dog from chewing things around the house. I sprayed a Lock&Lock box with some of that stuff and showed it to my dog. After one sniff she turned around and would not have anything to do with it. I don’t know how long the stuff will last on the box in the woods. Any comments or suggestions? Thanks!

So I know the website was just updated (when it really didn't need to be). Before the update, I was able to use Mozilla Firefox to search for caches with the "Hide/Seek a Cache"'s multiple ways to look for a cache. Now however, none of it works. So I tried it in Internet Explorer and it worked fine!
Can you please make the search engine compatible with Mozilla Firefox? Or at least figure out what the problem is?
If you can do that it would be much appreciated.
I just tried Firefox with Hide/Seak a cache with address and also with Zip code.
Give me an example of something that does not and I will try it.

I know they were working on images ,and they said it would be finish last night. I still have no backround or color paragraph for my cache pages. What now? Thanks USA45

I may have missed something...and I did scan the last couple of pages and did not see any reference to this.
This morning before we headed out to do some caching we could see the Google map at the lower part of the page. Tonight there is a big blank space where it used to be.
This is both with Internet Explorer 7.0 and Firefox 2.0
Please advise

The only workaround for this that I have found is to install FireFox 3 and just use it when I need to access and print from the geocaching.com site.
The reality is that FireFox printing is better....but far from perfect.
By the way, It would be nice, from time to time, to have a list of confirmed bugs that are currently being worked on. That should reduce the reduntant replies about the same issue.

I can't Find Archived caches or search for them in my area. When planning on placing a new cache it can be helpful to see if someone had placed one in the area in the past and see what can of problems the cache encountered or why it was archived.
I also can not Log a cache from a previous date. If I go caching out of the area, when I get back home to log my caches it will no longer reflect when I actually made the find/s for that time period.
So far most of the changes have helped you make it easer to generate income for the site but added nothing that great to the functionality or followed the old saying one step forward two steps back.
The back dating of log bug has been fixed.

A new bug seems to have crept in with this update. Now it doesn't matter what date you select for the logging of a new find....it puts in the current date.

I just tested it and it worked.....popped up right away. Maybe it really is fixed!

Comcast used my E-mail account yesterday to test the problem....but the problem has not been fixed yet. I just tested it and I can not open up a LOG E-Mail with comcast.net.
Will also continue to use use m.comcast.net until the issue is resolved completely.

It is the same here in Minnesota. I too, have Comcast and using webmail only, I can't open notifications of new logs or new caches placed. I did notice, however, that another frequent email sender from another company not related to GC has also exhibited the problem. That company also sends notifications of a different sort. There have been no error notifications, it just hangs up. I hadn't talked with Comcast yet, but may now do so since it seems system-wide.
The only solution I have is to wait until I get home from work to read them. My boss should be happier since I should be more productive....
I am now in a Live Chat with Comcast. I think everyone should do the same so that they will start to understand that it is not just an isolated problem.

The problem is computer independent and browser independent (Internet explorer 6 or 7 and Firefox) at least for the three we have tried. Comcast can't explain it and they see the same problem if they look at the messages in our account. Is anyone else having the same problem? Does anyone know what is different between the LOG messages and Contacting messages? Does anyone know of anything that changed on the servers at Geocaching.com between Wednesday and Thursday (Dec 12 & 13)? We can open the messages through another application such as Yahoo mail with their POP mail downloader from our Comcast account.
Maybe we can get Geocaching.com to talk with Comcast people?

I (collective gasp) have logged some "armchair" virtuals. All have required sending some information to the cache owner to be able to log a find. I have only tried to log a find on those that are meant to be"armchair" caches, where the cache owner clearly intended it to be "found" remotely. I don't have a problem with this as the cache owners decide if I can log a smiley or not. There are, however, many virts out there that one can do without going to the place, but they are not intended to be "found" in this manner. I don't think it is right to try a log a find for those if you haven't actually been there, but again, it's the cache owner's call.
My understanding of virtual caches came from the original definition:
"A virtual cache is an existing, permanent landmark of a unique nature. The seeker must answer a question from the landmark and verify to the cache owner that he was really there."
The point is that the answer is to verify to the cache owner that he really was there. The answer is not the end in itself.
If the logger were to say: I am answering your questions posed in your virtual geocache listing by using internet search systems and here is what I found..........Will you allow me to log it as a find? That would be honest and let the cache owner decide if they want to play the game your way and not to just try to beat the system. Then their log entry should say that you virtually visited the cache by searching the internet for answers to the questions.
By the way, the Geocacher in question must have gotten wind of this discussion because the log entry in question was withdrawn last night.

I just discovered a guy who logged a find of our virtual cache up north and also logged one near our house on the same day. Thinking that it was quite unusual for someone to find two of our virtual caches 250 miles apart, let alone on the same day, I checked a little further and discovered from his profile that in the last week he has logged 60 virtual caches in 12 states, the District of Columbia, Italy, Barbados and Sir Lanka! My thinking is that he did it by not leaving his computer chair. Another reason for not allowing new virtual caches?

It seems that a lot of Geocache hunters do not post a "didn't find It" on the cache web page. It is very helpful to the cache owner to have DNFs posted so they can go and check to see if it is still there.

The camera was a $4.95 one-time-use camera. I don't think so. The photo processor may add a code to the CD-ROM manually when they make the transfer. I will talk to them about that. Thank you for your suggestion anyway.Prime Suspect: It's possible the camera you used encoded the camera orientation into the image's EXIF data, and that was used to automatically rotate the image.

Geocaches on Private Roads

We were heading for a regular cache described as being 10 feet from the road and easy to find. When we were about to turn off from the main road to travel the road to the cache we encountered two signs saying that it was a private road. There is nothing in the cache description saying that permission has been granted to travel on the road to the cache. What's with that????
