GPS Battery Life - Long Cycling Trip
GeoDigger1222 replied to Mr. Wilson & a Mt. Goat's topic in GPS technology and devices
Interestingly enough, I just tested out a brand new set of four Eneloop AA rated at 2400 mAh. These are black in color. I'm leaving for Yellowstone in a few days and was curious how long they might last. I topped them off in my LaCrosse charger. I put two in my Oregon 450 and the other two in my Oregon 300. I set them both on the table on the back patio with the same settings, clear view of the sky. No back light, record track log in Auto mode, compass in auto mode. Just my normal hiking settings. Oh, and the 450 was connected to a tempe sensor as well. The 450 gave the low battery warning at just over 18 hours. My 300 still has one full bar left and 18 and a half hours and counting. Don't know if this helps. I think these will be adequate for my hiking. I'm sure I won't get quite this much out of them when I'm out hiking going from clear view of the sky to tree cover, etc. Also, I'll be looking at the screen now and then (my test didn't use the battery saver mode, i.e. the screen was on the trip manager the entire time) and not just sitting. But I'm thinking I should get at least 12 or so under normal hiking conditions. We'll see. And in case anyone cares, the 300 stopped at 19hrs 24 mins. -

Elevation plot no worky on 60CSx?
GeoDigger1222 replied to sviking's topic in GPS technology and devices
Do you have it set to record your track? I know on my 60csx I have to have the track set to record before getting the elevation plot. Otherwise it will just show the current elevation. Hope this helps. -
The batteries in the Nuvi 500 and 550's can be changed.

I have the SPOT I, not the SPOT II. So far I've had very good luck with the unit. It has yet to miss any OK messages I've asked it to send. But I make sure I'm in an open area when I send the OK message. I know I could be in trouble if I'm in a more unopen area. But I was pleasantly surprised at how well it tracked while doing an 8.7 mile hike in Lost Canyon in the Needles section of Canyonlands National Park. As the name implies, most of the hike is in a canyon. It successfully sent about 80% of the track points it should have (based on one every ten minutes). It also sent both of my OK messages successfully from down in the canyon. It also tracked successfully walking down into Horseshoe Canyon and to the Great Gallery in Utah. I had the SPOT clipped to the top of my Camel Back while hiking. I'm sure this orientation helped. My friends and family also were able to track me very well in my truck as I drove up from Hite, UT into the Maze of Canyonlands. In my truck I have the SPOT sit in the dashboard facing up. I honestly was surprised at how well it did in canyon country. I wasn't expecting it to do as well as it did. It also did much better than expected this past Sept. while hiking up to Fern Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. Most of that trail is dense tree cover. I got about again about 80% of the track points it should have (one every ten minutes). And it got out all three of my OK messages. Based on the specs, I would think SPOT II would do even better. I mainly use SPOT so my friends and family can see where I'm at and follow along. My parents love it. They feel they are along with me. Thank goodness I haven't had to use the 911 yet, and going to do everything I can to see that I never have to. Even though I have SPOT, I'm prepared to be stuck out on my own if something goes wrong. I guess that's just the old Boy Scout in me.

I bought my father Nuvi 500 for Xmas. No, you will not need a macro. It will download all the information and descriptions you need out of the box.

Nuvi 500/550 for all my needs?
GeoDigger1222 replied to bigcanoe's topic in GPS technology and devices
I personally own a 60Csx and a nuvi 750. I just got my dad a nuvi 500 for Xmas. I wanted to get him something that would be good for geocaching and benchmark hunting which he is really getting into, and also something he could pop into his vehicle. My dad is not tech savy so it needed to be something simple. The 500 seems to be a nice unit. My dad has been able to download geocaches to it. The paperless function is really nice with all the info right there. I haven't been out with him on the highways but in playing around with it, it operates much the same way as my nuvi does. It does have voice prompts but not text to speech. It does what my dad needs it to do and very easily. It is defintaly built more robust than my 750 but I'd still be worried about dropping it unlike my 60csx which I've managed to drop many times. If I were hiking up in the mountains or going on a longer outing I'd prefer my 60csx. But the 500 may just fit your needs. -
I too had my two month old 60csx shut off on me hiking in Utah last month. Even when I wasn't navigating a route, it would just shut down. Sometimes it would do it while I was stopped holding it in my hand and looking at it. I'd turn it back on only to have it about 5 seconds later shut back off. I have all the latest firmware updates. Changed batteries. Same thing. I don't know whether to send it back in or not???

City Select Upgrade Dvd
GeoDigger1222 replied to Doug in Alaska's topic in GPS technology and devices
I upgraded from CS 4.01 to CS 7. So that shouldn't be a problem. -
I just upgraded yesterday from City Select v 4.01 to v7. Cost $50 and loaded up just fine.

? About The Garmin 2620
GeoDigger1222 replied to GeoDigger1222's topic in GPS technology and devices
Yeah, I've been around here for quite awhile. Just don't have that many questions because reading this forum answers almost all of them. I've had my V since August 2002 so I've logged alot of miles with GPS. I don't leave home without it. -
I'm a new proud owner of a 2620. Love it so far. But my question is this. The 2620 tells me the software (or firmware) it is running is 4.20. But I see on Garmin's web site the latest firmware update they have is 3.90. Just wondering. I have no complaints at all was just curious. And even though I now have my 2620, I'll NEVER give up my V. Thanks for listening.

Garmin GPS V: basemap update with v2.12 beta?
GeoDigger1222 replied to worldtraveler's topic in GPS technology and devices
After upgrading to 2.12...go to map setup and scroll over to the "Area" tap. Select AUTO for River, Lake under Max Zoom. The lakes should reappear. For some reason, upgrading to 2.12 turns those selections to off. You might want to do the same thing for Park as well. Hope this helps. -
That's just it. I had all the required maps loaded into the V from MapSource. Actually, the area my route was in is all in one continuous area of Mapsource that was loaded into the V. So I know crossing any map boundaries was not the problem in this particular case. I'll try again this weekend and see what happens. I'll be sure to check that lock on road is on and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks!! That is one thing I did not check before starting the route. Next time I will definately check for that and see if that works. I am running 2.08. Amazing how quickly one can get help and ideas on here. Thanks a bunch!!!

Last Friday I went and discovered a benchmark (LF1368 if anyone is interested in the pics) with no problems. Was very impressed with the V. Even did great in extremely heavy tree cover. Never lost lock at all although did go to 2D navigation several times. Anyway, I got the V hooked back up in the vehicle and had it start navigating a route back to home. This particular route I had created using MapSource and downloaded it to the V. I noticed on the way back that the highlighting the V generates for the route you are on was sometimes off to the left or right of the road I was on. Also, at turns the pop-up screen would show the intersection but no arrow pointing which way to go. I continued on for about 50 miles at which time I looked at the V and it had locked up. The only thing visible on the screen was one very thin horizontal line across the screen. Nothing else. None of the buttons worked. The only way to shut it off was to disconnect the 12V and take the battery cap off. After powering it back up there have been no problems since. I was wondering if anyone else had experienced anything similar? Before the lock up, the V had been on for approximately four hours continuous. If it makes any difference, I had the City Select 4.01 and TOPO USA areas loaded on the V. When I was navigating on the road back to home, I was using City Select. That also was the same map set I used to create that particular route. Sorry for the long post but thanks for any ideas.

Thanks for the quick responses and info. All are great ideas. I think I'll be off today to look for a case. Again, thanks a million!!!

I've recently purchased a Garmin V. Love it!! My question is this...I frequently go to Canyonlands in Utah and do alot of hiking. And what I mean by hiking is 10...sometimes 15 miles all in one shot. Obviously, I can't carry my GPS in my hand all the time and in many places two hands are needed to get where you are going. How do you deal with having to put the GPSr away and losing reception? Is it possible to "clip" on an antenna say to your shirt or even your wide brimmed hat and leave the receiver in your backpack? I'd love to be able to have "unbroken" tracks if I could. I guess that's more than one question. I'm just looking for some ideas. Love this site too. Thanks for the help.
