  1. But it's not a fact...if an officer isn't aware of what geocaching is, and a geocacher appears to the officer to be displaying suspicious behavior, then a judge will side on the officer unless there is some glaring reason that shows the officer was being negligent, harassing or intentionally deviant. I agree with most of your reply, btw. Including how you feel you've presented your case...I don't in any way feel you are trying to be deliberately defiant or mischevious. I am simply saying that in a court of law an officer is not going to be held accountable for not knowing what geocaching is when determining suspicious behavior. My wife is an RN...you're right she is held accountable for situations that specifically relate to her area of expertise (especially because she is trained specifically for them), but if an event arose on her floor that was outside of her area of expertise, or training, then she isn't going to be considered negligent for not knowing every possible medical condition that can arise.
  2. Having personal legal experience in this type of situation let me suggest one thing. When you are standing in front of the judge I wouldn't lip off about anything remotely insinuating that any officer worth their badge should know what geocaching is and how to profile for it.
  3. I don't know...essentially they are two different functions in a lot ways. Do you need a submergable device for car nav. (Hopefully not!)? Do you need a compass for car nav.? Do you need voice directions for geocaching / hiking? I share the frustration...I wish I could have got the perfect unit for both, but I think if that unit existed it'd be about the price two seperate units with the same combined functionality anyway.
  4. Bah, lighten up...that was funny. Besides, it was a free bump...
  5. Thanks, I noticed that some of the car nav. systems are starting to use it which lead me to believe it must be a bit better....or they are just trying to appease consumers that want the SiRF III tag.
  6. Can any Magellan users, those familiar with their line, tell me if these units use SiRF III or not and if so which ones they are? It looked to me like none of them did.
  7. $400 or less even... http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=141928 $50 rebate is good through Dec 31st, 2006. Info in that thread shows how to get it at right around $300 shipping included.
  8. Does the XL have SiRF III? Also, do you use it all for car nav? If so, how is it?
  9. Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx. I like the 76CSx, but the rebate and extra dollars off you can get at like Amazon.com can get the 60CSx down to about $300.
  10. Here's what I am looking for...I am going to be a relatively casual geocacher. If I get more serious into it a year down the road or so I'll buy a geocaching-centric GPSr like a 60CSx or 76CSx (or whatever looks good at that time). - I would like to find something that is really decent at car navigation. - It'd be nice if it had auto-routing. - I don't care if it's Magellan or Garmin. - I want SiRF III chip. - I'd like to be able to upload cache info. waypoints (still new, apologize for nomenclature issues) - I don't care about compass if it can get me close and I can see distance to cache and have an idea what direction via map or something. I have considered: - 60 CSx - 76CSx - eXplorist XL - eXplorist 600 - Nuvi 350 - RoadMate 3000T - iQue M4 I am open to suggestions. Quest 2 looks perfect except no SiRF III, it appears.
  11. Is it possible to geocache with the Garmin StreetPilot C500 series? Anyone see drawbacks on the geocaching side? This would be for a casual geocacher that mainly would like a nice car navigation unit.
  12. Watch for shipping at gpssaleonline. I think for me it was almost $20...which actually put them back above Buy.com (or some other major seller I checked).
  13. In this thread one person got one for under $300 with a little work (have to sign up for credit card and be first time Buy.com buyer) http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=141928 I'll mention in this thread as well...watch out for sites like www.gpsonsale.com, etc,. for shipping charges...it's all about your end cost and the bigger companies with free shipping sometimes win out because of that issue and stackable rebates.
  14. Quest seems like a good option. I leaned away from it for two reasons: 1. Memory 2. Reviews indicated that pre-loaded map data was outdated Seems like maybe the Quest didn't have SiRF III as well, but I forget. Overall, it was rated very high in reviews though. Sounds like a good fit for you.
  15. I am in the process buying a GPS right now and just decided against the 60csx doing week long test with a unit my friend loaned to me. On the geochacing side it's nearly flawless. It was the car nav that I wasn't overly impressed with (understanding that it's not designed for that). On the driving side...it's very, very good, but imo an external antenna is a must. I tested about 15 various routes that would challenge reception an accuracy and without the antenna I would get very late signals (beeps, not voice remember) on when to turn in some areas. Also, I seemed to get better reception in some vehicles than others (even with antenna). Our Dode Ram 1500 and Honda Accord worked very well. Our Ford Taurus seemed problematic for some reason...again, all tested on the same routes. If you can deal with that smaller screen and no voice then it's doable, but to me when you are taking unfamiliar routes I'd prefer just MapQuesting the route over the 60csx for safety. I am going to get a PDA/GPS for car nav and the minimum geocaching I'll be doing for now and then save up for a 60csx later to use specifically for geocaching. In my research I don't feel like there is a near perfect device for both. Geocaching, I give it a 9.0 (because no unit is perfect). Car Nav, I give it a 4.5 Which reminds me...I need to log my caches I found and tested with.
  16. Or simply look here for a comprehensive updated list: http://www.garmin.com/whatsNew/currentpromotions/
  17. I'd be willing to help both of you, but not sure how that'd work without you just flat out trusting someone you don't know. Where will you be staying in the US? Probably not Iowa.
  18. Can you use that Nuvi for geocaching? What would be downside for geocahcing versus like the 60csx?
  19. What does that software give you beyond the free data you get that is pre-loaded?
  20. When I go to Amazon.com I see this for the price... Garmin GPSMap 60CSx Handheld GPS Navigator -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- List Price: $535.99 Price: $395.41 & this item ships for FREE with Super Saver Shipping. Details You Save: $140.58 (26%) Rebate: $50.00 Price After Rebate: $345.41
  21. Yeah, I've been down that path hehe. Imo, Buy.com seems best when you can get all those benefits. I just hate signing up for those cards then canning them later.
  22. This thread has a loud buzz of "it's my cache, and I can do as I please"... Exactly. And that bothers you ... why? If you don't think a cache owner should be allowed to manage his own cache as he pleases, then who's being the 'control freak' here? I didn't say it bothers me...I am simply stating fact. I would think that being a cache owner one would have the interest of being repsectful to finders being in that position themselves when the go out. Is there a problem with be respectful to how others enjoy the game? Obviously, regarding on the second quote you read right over the answer to the question you posed. The cache owner is being the control freak. As far as your latter comment about the web functionality...I have no knowledge of that. I am simply proposing what is best for both parties versus an arrogant response like: "I am the owner, it's my 'right' to delete them" "I don't want to waste time as a cacher to be hung up by ridiculous requirements" My solution should relatively appease both parties.
  23. Henry - When I looked up shipping on that item for me it was $18.00 though...
