  1. Yeah, it's more of a model by model decision...making sure you get the basic features you want. I started concentrating more on what features I wanted then zeroed in on a make/model that fit the build.
  2. I think one of the things you are forgetting is that there is a lot of ancillary data provided in the proprietary maps. Also, I believe the proprietary map data is much more efficient in terms of space and processing. Granted, it'd be nice if they implemented something like this...but I wouldn't say they are doing it "wrong" necessarily by not doing it the way PSP GPS is doing it.
  3. My suggestion would be to first...be patient. There is actually a lot to absorb if you want to...but take it easy. The first geocache I found I hand entered into my GPS. From there I start simply using the "search" function here on the forums. Most questions you need answered have been multiple times...."search" is your friend. A lot of great info. here on the forums.
  4. Only the Charter Members can see that. How does one become a charter member? 5000+ posts? Always wondered that.
  5. Are there any 60CSx specific sites or tutorials? Preferrably advanced function type...
  6. i5, if you ask IBM this week. Yes, I do systems software development and system administration.
  7. Anyone from Iowa...anyone really...I am still fairly new here.
  8. I agree whole-heartedly with this line of thinking. I think by and large the thought about avoiding these type of caches is being blown a bit out of proportion. I certainly respect that people want to avoid suspicious behavior, but there are a number of ways around this entire issue...many of which have been suggested. Even being extremely cautious I would be willing to be a person could still log the majority of these types of caches. Now, as stated before, I have kids...so I have great cover. But if I didn't...I'd simply go about my business and carry some of the "what is geocaching" or whatever they are titled pamphlets. The majority of supervision being done are by average people like you and I that would be understanding and thankful for a heads up...who knows...might even proselytize some Muggles.
  9. Thanks, I've actually seen this and I am getting some to take with me. Glad you brought it up...because the first time I got caught I was kind of startled by the Muggle and when they asked me what I was doing I told them I was looking for Ectoplasm. Seriously, great suggestion.
  10. Good info here... I've been looking for the same.
  11. Thanks, I have the 60CSx and when I updated the firmware I didn't even think to look...then I wasn't sure how to get back to the logs and tell.
  12. It's hard to say...our marriage is very good and had a solid foundation prior to geocaching. My wife doesn't enjoy caching all that much...in fact, in and of itself she doesn't care for it significantly, but she enjoys watching the kids have a great time and getting out for the walk. And, honestly, she's warmed up to the actual caching a bit. I wouldn't say geocaching itself has helped, but it's been a great avenue for us to continue to grow our family.
  13. Does anyone know if the recent firmware changes for various devices from various companies incorporate the new rules?
  14. Having worked directly with the railroad I can tell you this is more common that you might suspect.
  15. Also, there is a good chance the railroad right of way has been bought out...check with the county office (someone at the courthouse will know). More than likely they can tell you who owns that property.
  16. The rule as I see it reads: # Caches hidden in close proximity to active railroad tracks. In general we use a distance of 150 ft (46 m) but your local area’s trespassing laws may be different. All local laws apply. I would get a letter from the railroad company and include it along with the ruling. It would seem to me that is a valid location.
  17. That's kind of what I figured and how I approach it. It just seems like some of the replies on this forum lead me to believe people avoid a cache if any Muggle is in sight. Just was curious what the general thought was. Thanks.
  18. Thanks for the input, Ray. I will probably just use my 60CSx honestly, but it's nice to know about the two keys because I've contemplated a unit for my wifes vehicle. I am unfamiliar with maps for the most part...is this particular map useful for other devices (ie. most GPS units can use the format)? Does it include more detail then something you'd get default from like TomTom (even though I likely won't go that route)? Lastly, what about street updates? Here in the Des Moines area there is a fair amount of major construction on the main interstate and arterial streets....would I be best to wait for those updates to be published or can you get those later on? I appreciate the input...hopefully I haven't derailed your topic.
  19. This is perhaps a worthy "newbie" topic. I am still fairly new overall. What's the general concensus on Muggle interaction? I get the feeling some people avoid it at all costs. Granted, you don't want Muggles mugglizing caches and such, but where is the line between avoiding Muggles in caching situations and sharing your hobby with a potential convert? Personally, I don't worry about avoiding them if I think they are mature enough to respect geocaching and the cache itself. Obviously, some situations would warrant avoiding the cache if you felt those individuals might jeopardize it's existance or something.
  20. Good luck in India. I work in IT and work with a lot of people from India....it's always enjoyable talking to them, but they are mostly US residents so I've never talked about geocaching with them in terms of India. You might try the forums toward the bottom too...they cover less US-centric areas of the world.
  21. Similar to my experience when I started caching.... I chose the 60CSx because at the time there was $100 rebate otherwise I'd of done the exact same thing and gone with the 76CSx. Good choice and plan, imo. How do you like map version? Is it fairly good for road travel? I am looking into getting a map for mine to use in the vehicle for street nav.
  22. Personally, I like these caches. I have kids that are young and they enjoy playgrounds. For them it's the perfect place to hunt for one. It's a bit hasty to label these "bad" caches. Hiding one in an electrical transformer would be bad...just because it's not ideal for you doesn't make it bad. Many of the more difficult cache locations I can't do with my kids...I don't inherently label them as "bad".
  23. Thanks for the pic...you have a nice spot to locate that type of mount. Here is a link from that proclipusa site above that shows what dashboard I am dealing with. http://www.proclipusa.com/?sectionpath=144...;p_leftorright= Wish I knew which Garmin mount he is using with that...I could live with that setup. Is yours held on with adhesive?
  24. I am thinking about changing mine... Mine now is: EGAMI I want to move that to my bike and get something geocache related on my truck, but haven't thought of something I like. Here is a vanity plate search for Iowa if anyone is interested: http://data.dmregister.com/vanityplates/search.php
  25. Good luck with that!
