Ok, cool...I was just curious since you didn't mention it I thought I'd recommend (figured you probably did). That's a nice way to handle it....remove it and replace it. That's what I usually try to do, but sometimes you get out there with no swag left, so you just remove it. I've only seen that once though.

Have you tried contacting the owner? Maybe they'd be willing to take care of it since technically it's a maintenance issue. If I owned that cache I'd like to know that.

How to build a 5/5 Geocache buoy from scratch?
egami replied to Snoogans's topic in General geocaching topics
I am thinking the biggest concern you'll have that someone brought up is keeping it dry. I like the gist of the idea though. -
The OP brought up the food disease.

Totally random. We never know when we are going or when we travel if we'll get time to do any. And when we do go we probably never hit a lot of the ones we intend to. Are you seriously OCD or just kind of jokingly OCD? We have a 3 year old that is showing some ever so slight OCD-like actions.

You're welcome.

It's apparent you didn't go back and read my previous replies and what my contention was with one of the OP's subsequent replies...I responded to their comment, so if it was off-tangent, blame the OP. I was merely responding in line with what was brought up.

You say that like it's a bad thing...

Well, when you start talking about getting killed due to Play-Doh that'll tend to set things up for that... So, I guess we're all on the same page now....don't eat Play-Doh if you have Celiac's.

What if you couldn't find a stage to a multi? Then I didn't get to ground zero, did I?

How to build a 5/5 Geocache buoy from scratch?

Depending on the body of water this may be a BAD idea. If motor vessels are allowed on the water, then a submerged object like that could cause thousands in damage to the boat that hits it with their prop or snags it on thier skeg, or a swim ladder that didn't get raised. True, and honestly if saw a buoy just under the waterline while boating I'd be more apt to go to it and check it out, not less. Very good point and an indication that I am from a state that has no lakes. Assuming the visibility is good enough, how about 10-15 feet down? Well, again, I am not sure this buys you anything...I've boated in the ocean, the Mississippi, murky lakes, clear lakes....imo, the most likely candidate for that would be an extremely calm, clear lake and I think the same inherent problem exists because boat traffic is truly sporatic and unpredictable I believe Muggling would be extremely likely...I guess in my mind the best bet is to have it simulate something in place which would be just a regular old buoy. That's just my opinion from my boating experience. -
Answer that and you'll have solved the mystery of the geocaching universe. Imo, it's just part of life...everyone has preferences and they all differ. Is either inherently right or wrong? Not really.

How do you get new cache alerts on your cell phone?
egami replied to we"re lost's topic in General geocaching topics
What is the reason for the forwarding the notification from a standard e-mail address (yahoo, gmail or whatever) when you can just plug in an alternate e-mail address on the rule itself? I must be overlooking the reasoning to that...just to get it both in e-mail and on your cell? -

That's pretty much my criteria.

What if you found the parking area and your started the hike. 300 yards from the cache the trail is washed out and there is no way available to get to the cache? thats a note. I got to the parking area. I got out, but I couldn't search because of the conditions Now, see, to me that's a DNF because something of the hunt prevented me from continuing or completing the hunt. That's valuable information that would alert my fellow seekers when they might skip over a note. Remember, folks might use the log-type icons of GSAK and other programs or scan the cache page for purple faces while not reading the logs themselves. Then, when something pops up that might affect the hunt they'll read the appropriate log. Me, I'd rather not hide adverse trail conditions or other pertinent conditions in a log-type that might not be read in a timely manner to be useful. I agree. That is a DNF in my book. I started out intending to find the cache and didn't. I don't know that that's a good criteria across the board. We set out to look for caches and mid-way got derailed because we forgot the diaper bag, ran home to make the change and decided not to go back out.

Is there an easy way to tell if there are even caches in all 99 counties?

Technically this is not correct. I've posted the actual US regulations on here before, but it's been probably a year ago...and don't feel like dredging through topics even with the search function to find it. Here is an article, however, that explains a similar issue... http://www.educationreport.org/article.aspx?ID=5394 Personally, I'd avoid placing caches on mailboxes, but it's widely done and at the end of the day is probably a low risk gamble, but a gamble nonetheless.

Technically, it's not wheat that could kill you but gluten. And if you eat ONLY wheat all day (which would be STUPID), you still won't die. You might get cancer, but that's about it. Get your fill of veggies, fruits, meats, geocaching, and gluten-free foods; you'll be just fine. I understand this, but I was refuting the context that it was used in...which I had no control over.

Get your fill of veggies, fruits, meats, geocaching, and gluten-free foods; you'll be just fine. Ok, so as usual, it turns into an "attack the PO" thread. What the heck does "intellectually irresponsible representation to pull the "Wheat can KILL ME" card" mean exactly? That's ridiculous. I wasn't pulling ANY card. This whole thread is about protecting caches from being destroyed by ANIMALS by NOT putting FOOD in them. I never implied that touching a wheat container would kill me. But, wheat can kill me. Nearly did. I went undiagnosed for a very long time and spent three months in the hospital recovering. I'm six feet tall and at the end weighed only 118 pounds and was on life support. It's been two years since then and I still have not recovered. Nitpicking over wheat vs gluten is a red herring. Wheat was the ingredient mentioned in the Hasbro quote "It DOES contain Wheat". I didn't take it further since this thread is not about celiac or even allergies period (somebody else brought that up), but about improper swag. Too many sentences or too many words in a post seems to confuse. Apparently my original post was too complicated for some to read with any intelligence as it was.... And, no. "If I eat ONLY wheat every day I won't die" is so completely WRONG it does not deserve a response. Educate yourself on the subject if you feel qualified enough to spout on about it. So, to clarify (and I'll make sure there's nothing conversational to mislead those with poor reading skills). This thread is about Play Doh being FOOD and you should NOT put FOOD in caches period. I'll tell you what it means in simple terms. You are falsely and inaccurately depicting the severity of an action, and how it will affect you having Celiac's, and it's plain and simply irresponsible and unfair representation to people who are uninformed about the disease. That's what it means...and I didn't attack you. You just got defensive because someone made a comment you were uncomfortable with. There is no kind of attack in what I wrote. If this thread is about avoiding the placement of Play-Doh in caches then stick to it and don't venture off using false scare tactics.
-
I wouldn't log a DNF unless I could get to ground zero to search.
-
I didn't "toss" it in. It was in the quote from Hasbro. Wheat can KILL ME, but I remove play doh from caches as a matter of practice. But the "toss' wasn't mine, it was Hasbro's. However, maybe a view from the other side..... well, never mind, that would hijack this thread entirely. While I agree with the sentiment that Play-Doh has no business in caches as a fellow inflicted Celiac it's kind of intellectually irresponsible representation to pull the "Wheat can KILL ME" card.

I wouldn't log it...in fact, if it's been archived and isn't being maintained I'd probably retrieve it if possible. Shouldn't of been left out there, imo. Actaully, I'd probably try contacting the owner first and if no response I'd retrieve it...or maintain it and re-host it.
