Sorry about your loss...it's good to hear you're looking at doing something like that. Personally, I have a hard time with the memorial concept, but I really like the types of memorials that have more than just a marker-like purpose and I think that's a great tribute.

NOT placing TBs and geocoins in premium member only caches
egami replied to GeoMeerkats's topic in General geocaching topics
To each their own. I won't personally discriminate either way. A cache is a cache. -
While I am in the pro-cemetery camp I am also reserved against where they are placed, so I treat it like any other cache anywhere else, if it's located poorly I go through channels to challenge it. The thing I've never seen is where it's blatently illegal in any state. I hear this mentioned often yet have never had anyone be able to prove it. I'd be curious to read actual state code that prohibits this across all cemeteries.

Oops, misread I see what you are getting at.
-
If I were going to try and get around it I'd try to get on another hotspot with hopefully a different ISP. Good luck!

Interesting, that sounds like an error from the server and not a browser error. I am assuming you've rebooted? Maybe try deleting your cookies, temporary files...but I don't think that is your PC.
-
Another thoughtv while waiting for a reply...if you are using GSAK just run the PQ and get the cache data that way...unless you are logging finds, in which case can always be done later and back-dated.
-
Can you provide the exact message?

Congrats. I am stuck on 24.

One of the best texts on Navigation has to be Bowditch's The American Practical Navigator and while it deals mostly with waterborne nvaigation the principles are all the same. It is now available in PDF format at: http://www.irbs.com/bowditch/ If you can get through this you will be able to navigate anywhere. Awesome, just the way I'd prefer it too....digital format, thanks for the link.

I'd really enjoy a pre-technological course on navigation. I've always had a good internal compass and sense of direction...then again, it's hard to get lost in Iowa outside of some forested area, but it would be neat to go through a course like that.

I'd let them log it. Especially if they were also affected by the recent fires...this may be one of the few things they have from previous normalcy.

Pictures - Cool Cache Containers (CCC's)
egami replied to AmishHacker's topic in General geocaching topics
This has led to the demise of many real sprinklers........ Real sprinklers are pretty resilient. I've installed them before and really you can't do too terribly much damage to them if you do get aggressive enough to dismantling a real one. However, at this point it should become relatively apparent that's not the cache. And fortunately very inexpensive to replace and repair. -
This is certainly seemingly true in our area from what I've seen and what I've heard. In fact, the guy that was FTF on my cache I am not sure ever collected the prize...

I can respect that, Michelle. Personally, I lettered in 5 sports in high school and played college ball, so I can absolutely relate to your viewpoint. I think ultimately it's just one of the moot points to argue because there is strict definition and there is perception...and there is much to be said about perception. If you really want to get me going on "sport" and "definition" just start in about Parkour.
-
And I think that's your perogative. I don't consider Hockey a sport.
-
Why on earth do some people insist on this? Let me ask you outright... is fishing a sport? Hunting? The sporting goods stores certainly think so. Sports Afield magazine certainly thinks so. Fishing and hunting guides call their customers "sports". (curious that hunters call the animal they're hunting "game", though LOL) That said, I still find "activity" the best word to use. Let me introduce you to the concepts of 'inches' and 'points'. That's a good point. And, really, as briansnat stated...the bottom line is it fits the definition. And, I believe, if you look up the dictionary definition you'll find the competition and scoring aren't pre-requisites to define something as a sport. In fact, I'll look it up and just post it: /shrug Doesn't really matter anyway. I bolded the key element.

How to build a 5/5 Geocache buoy from scratch?
egami replied to Snoogans's topic in General geocaching topics
It could be possible he is in a "no wake" lake. If that's the case it's probably six of one, half dozen a dozen of the other, but it sounded like he would be constructing it either way and that's a very sound point...it'd be a good idea to construct it in a manner which would be collision-friendly. That one in the picture sure appears to be metal. -
On my 1115th find, I found a cool "LPC"
egami replied to Kit Fox's topic in General geocaching topics
Very nice...our city has lampposts very similar to that. I contemplated a LPC, but the area just didn't overcome the fact like it does on yours. Very nice location indeed though... those fountains are getting more popular. -
I did a FTF prize in my first cache, but subsequent caches will be random prizes to people after it's been found. Nothing against FTFer's....just spreading the love.

I guess they are thinking more Nuvi-like versus handheld.
-
I have a friend that wants to buy a car nav unit that can also be used for geocaching for under $200. Any such thing exist? I only follow the handhelds for the most part.

My wife goes with 'Stupid'. Mine would, except that she relishes the chance to get the kids out from under foot...

My friend calls it Geektivity.
