  1. That's when you find a fellow cacher and say -- hey want to go caching tomorrow? and the cacher goes.. Hmm tomorrow IN THE COLD? and you say DAHH!! and then the other cacher says.. Sure why not!!
  2. Hey -- I would get a case as suggested above to protect your EXPENSIVE GPSr. Then locate a piece of software called EASYGPS to load the cache coordinates into your GPS. Once you are good and hooked on the sport buy a Palm and or Pocket PC and get a palm/pocket pc cache page viewer like GPXView. Next subscribe to Gecoaching.com for the pocket queries. This for the purpose of doing paperless caching. I have been doing this for almost 3 years. I couldn't understand the hype about pocket queries until I was able to load 300 cache pages up onto a PDA. NO MORE PAPER !!! YEAHH!!!.. Best investment I ever made. good luck
  3. Have you tried this.. A cache in plain sight with a combination lock. In order to get to the cache, the user must find the 4 lock combination numbers hidden in various other locations. Once they have the numbers then let them see how long it takes to crack the safe. My Mastermind cache series does exactly this, and it is definately a fun one. BTW - When I start running out of ideas, I take a little break from the cache stashing game and put my mind on something else. That way when I decide to hide another cache, I have a fresh prespective on things. You may also try archiving older caches, and then hiding caches a little less frequent. If you are like me, this game is a life long persuit, and if I blew all my cache ideas in a year, then I have nothing to look forward to. Another thing to do is increase the overall difficulty of caches. The more time you have to think about a difficult cache placement, the better they tend to be. Good luck..
  4. Sure, all the cool ones are no where near WA state..
  5. I found just the thing. Out shopping with the wife and I saw a big taratella with a motion sensor on it. If you trigger the sensor, the trantella drops down. I have an old Willow on my driveway where I could put the cache. Then when they move the ammo box it would of course cause the spider to come out of it's lair.. Man I'm going to have some fun with this one....
  6. I've been caching for over almost 3 years, and I have heard of this happening numerous times. Here is an article from 2003 where this happened as well. Is this a bomb? Nope, just a geocache. Just remember.. in today's day and age make sure you MARK the container very well. Otherwise it may meet the same fate as above.. BTW -- Try to avoid making caches out of tubes or pipes. The main reason this one met it's doom was because A. it was made out of a large white pvc pipe. B. The owner did not mark the outside of the container. C. it was hidden in a rather visible location. D. A paranoid farmer happened to notice it. E. Cache was located at bottom of telephone pole next to a major interstate freeway. A+B+C+D+E = a bomb scare.
  7. Spiders and Snakes give me the creeps. I'd thought about finding some of those spring snakes that would pop out of the cache when you opened the cache lid. Of course I might cause someone to wet their pants, or give an old person a heart attack..
  8. Took a long break from caching. Got too burned out by it, but now that I've had time to lament on things, I started pondering a new cache container idea. Since Halloween is almost here, I thought about a new night time cache with something in it that would jump out of the box. Has anyone else had this devious little idea? has anyone done one, or encountered one that made you jump? Just curious..
  9. Email ElkMilk or the 1/2 Whit of the two wacky whits. They have some Hummdingers on Hwy 12.. Just do a search on 98903 to find their member profiles.
  10. Hey I should get one of these coins for free. The Volcano blew on my 13th B-day and since the only thing I got from St Helens is ash, I think it is only fitting that I get a geocoin.. All fun aside.. my b-day really is May 18, but what are the odds of a volcanic eruption on my 13th b-day. The coin looks pretty cool. I'm going to have to watch out for one.
  11. GPSR's come in many way shapes and forms. If you just need a good gps without all the bells and whistles, then look for the new Magellan Explorists. These run around $69 - $75. Need some bells and whistles. The magellan Sportrak is an awesome GPS. Have seen as low as $120. Need something else? Magellan Meridian would be the recommendation. This is what I have, and it's a great GPS. I paid $280 for it, but it was well worth the cache. Oh!! I made a funny.. Garmin is also a good brand, but I just don't care for the Etrek's or legends. Don't get me wrong. I think both Magellan and Garmin have come out with excellant products, but my preference is the Magellan. BTW - Garmin also makes the Gecko which is around $69 bucks and will also get you caching. Here is one thing that Garmin has that Magellan does not have. The Rhino. -- A GPS and two way radio built into one unit. If you have two units, you may broadcast your coordinates to a partner. Very cool.. Anyway, Garmin, or Magellan.. Buy either one, and you won't go wrong.
  12. The $1 is a good place to start. I've picked up small plastic frogs(geofrogs), knomes, plastic reptiles and dinosaurs, and of course logbooks. You can also get great small micro containers as well at the 1$ store. But the place to make some steals, is at St Vincent DePauls or the GoodWill. Have found some worthy cache items there for not a lot of money. Here is just a hint of what I have found. Racket Ball rackets for $2. Exellant for dog friendly cache. Our dog misty is a pest when it comes to playing fetch. But if you can tire her out, then she is a happy camper. A racketball racket consistantly puts a tennis ball 200 feet out, with each and every wack. Other cool items -- Signature Golf Balls, baseballs, ceramic nicknacks, and lots of mctoys for the ole trash cache. Anyway, that is just a few ideas. If you don't want to spend a lot on a cache, don't. Make a micro, or if you place a regular container, make it a hard one to find, but make the contents rewarding to the cacher even though it's not about the contents.
  13. Served in Somalia just prior to Black Hawk Down. I didn't have a lot of time to tell my wife that I was going to Somalia and I might not come home. So don't ponder over this too much. Just tell them I've receiced orders to go to IRAQ. God willing I'll be home in a year and leave it at that. Make sure you have a will and the $200,000 military life insurance policy to take care of your family in the event you don't come back.
  14. Why wouldn't they allow it if you have a GC label on the outside that clearly identifies it as a cache? The only ones that have been blown up are the ones not marked.
  15. Try it for yourself. You'd be amazed what signals will go through. Surprised someone hasn't done this with their teenager? I'm glad there were no GPS's when I was growing up.. I can hear the conversation with my parents " now Son.. I see you were at this location for over 8 hours. I made a waypoint and checked the location. It lead me right to your girlfriends house.."
  16. When I create a cache, I try and make it a theme and the contents of the cache then tend to follow that theme. I.e. Rest Stop caches might have band aids, rubber gloves, batteries, sewing kit, etc.
  17. Like World Peace? Can't we all just get along? Speaking of puppies.. has anyone seen her's?
  18. Hey I thought we were talking about the unobtainable
  19. ... a jeep travel bug, and maybe a cool geocoin. When I woke the next morning and got out of bed. I showered and shaved and put on my old caching threads.
  20. Dang.. some people are gluttens for punishment.. Tempting to throw my line in the water one more time but I think I'll have to pass on this one..
  21. Not sure? depends on how you count or what you are counting..
  22. where have I seen a similar idea?? Oh yeah... Here.. and your idea really is not a lame idea..
  23. Ok, Christmas is almost here, and I think it's time for a little story.. I'll start the story off, but you have to add on to it. Comic Strips are definately welcome.. Here goes.. Twas the night before Christmas and all through my house, the only sound that was heard was me clicking my mouse. On the hunt for new caches, tomorrow I will find, in the hopes of being the first, to log the first find.. Man, I love a good story. I can't wait to see how this one ends..
  24. Maybe I should have asked how many of us have taken Sales Promotional gift items from work and used them as exchange items.. That I can definately say I'm guilty of that. I.e. older unused Mouse Pads with company logo, envelope openers with the company logo on them.
