  1. I have a friend in Beijing, China who would like a GPS to start Geocaching with. This would be his first GPS and he is new to geocaching. I don't know very much about your device. Is it easy to use? Is it accurate? How much would it cost to ship the item to Beijing China? There are only 30-50 geocaches in Beijing. Would you pre-load all of the Bejing Geocaches into the GPS before you ship it so that it is ready to use? Does the GPS power supply work with 240volts or is it just 120volts?

  3. I would highly recommend the iPad. With an iPad or iPhone you can access the Geocaching website straight from the device. This means that you don't need a computer to find and log caches. I have used and iPhone as my only caching device and have not had problems with GPS accuracy. If you can afford an iPad you should get one. Be sure to get the WiFi + 3G because the WiFi only model does not have a GPS.
  4. Yes you can because I am including a $15 USB converter cable.
  5. This was my first GPS and I started using this when I began. I think that it is very easy to use. The I only have a few other GPSs to compare its ease of use to and it was much easier to use than those. The device is simple and has all the basic functions you would need for geocaching. There are only 6 buttons Power on/off Switch menu (Pressing this will switch from map mode to compass mode or any other modes that you need to switch to.) Navigate up Navigate down Navigation joystick (up, down, left, right, and click in to select) Find waypoint. Here is how you would do the two most important and basic functions, finding and marking geocaches. To find a geocache that you have saved to the device press find waypoint will bring up a list of the geocaches saved on the device sorted by which ones are the closest or sorted by alphabetical order. Then use the joystick to select the geocache you want to find and then select "go to". This will bring up a virtual compass to navigate you to the cache. After you find it you can even mark the cache as found to keep track of what caches you have found. To mark a waypoint onto the device press the switch menu button to take you to the main menu where there is a button to mark a waypoint. Selecting this will bring up options for type of waypoint, name, and location. Use the joystick to enter in this information with the onscreen keyboard and click ok. I have purchased a USB converter that I will be bundling with this you that you can connect the device to your PC or Mac for adding geocaches from Geocaching.com without needing to go in and manually import them. If you need any help with it I will be happy to explain how to use it more and give you free technical support. It also has the user manual and quick start guide that came with it so you can look in there for more detailed information (the quick start guide is one page front and back with basic instructions. This is very different then the multi volume encyclopedias that come with some products).
  6. I have a good condition used Garmin eTrex Legend that I am looking to sell for $75. It comes with a USB converter cable so you can connect it to your computer and has a warranty. I started out using the eTrex and think that is a great entry GPS. If you want to connect to the computer I would go with this instead of the Geomate JR because from what I understand the only way you can edit the Geocache waypoints on the Geomate JR is if you pay extra for an update pack which may not give you the connectivty you desire. For more information on it click on this post. Also, I have geocached my dog and he has enjoyed it. I am still working on trying to get him to sniff out the geocaches. He has found the cache before me a few times, but most of the time he has no clue what I am wanting him to do.
  7. I am selling a used Garmin eTrex Legend for with warranty and a USB cable for $75 which is $50 off of the new price. I started out with this GPS and would recommend it as a good handheld unit and think that it is great for beginners. For more information see this post.
  8. I have a used Garmin eTrex Legend that I am selling for $75 which includes a USB cable and Walmart warranty. I started geocaching at about your brothers age and this was my first GPS so I would recommend this as a good beginner GPS. For more information go to this post.
  9. I am planing on buying an iPhone 3Gs very soon and because I can use this for geocaching with the Groundspeak Geocaching iPhone app I am going to sell my existing Garmin eTrex Legend. This is a used handheld GPS designed for outdoor use. It has WAAS for improved accuracy, is waterproof, and is great for Geocaching. The only downside is that this does not give driving directions. If you are looking for a car GPS this is not for you, but it is great for outdoor uses for Geocaching. The device is in great condition and comes with: Original Packaging Great condition Garmin eTrex Ledgend ($100 new) Converter cable to connect GPS using USB ($15 new) 2 Year Walmart product replacement plan ($10 when purchaced on 2/27/09) Total $125 value that I am selling for $75 saving you $50. I am a geocacher with over 200 finds and a verified Pay Pal user so the transaction is safe. I have never sold something over the internet with Pay Pal so this will be a new experience for me, but you can trust that this will be secure. The price is $75 and that price does not include shipping so that is up to you to decide how you want it shipped. Please reply with any questions or contact me if you are interested.
  10. Are you sure that Communicator is supposed to be able to work with serial devices via a USB-serial adapter? I thought I had read a long time ago that Communicator would only work with native USB GPS units. My Macs get along just fine with my ancient Garmin GPS III+ via a Keyspan USB-serial adapter. I use MacGPS Pro software on both my desktop Power Mac and this MacBook. But I don't think Communicator will work. The version notes on Garmin's website are ambiguous: does "RS232 serial devices are not supported on the Mac" mean they aren't supported natively, or they aren't supported even with a USB adapter? I think it's both, but would be happy to be proven wrong. Patty That could be the issue. It works fine with the adaptor on a PC.
  11. The plugin does not work in Safari 4, but works in firefox. I have tried USB and it does not work.
  12. I have wanted to connect the Garmin eTrex to the mac so I purchased a USB to RS-232 serial adaptor since this is the only way. I have installed all the drivers I could find to run this, but it is not detected by any GPS software. I found on the internet a Mac Caching software that can detect it in a serial mode. System profiler detects the adaptor when it is plugged in. Garmin web updater and garmin communicator plugin do not recognize it. I would like to be able to use the garmin communicator plug in, but do not know how. The device has the latest software 3.9
