  1. Before I got my iPhone, I had difficulty remembering to write logs. Remembering which caches I'd found or finding the time in front of a computer (I'd rather be outside in my free time, that's why I geocache!) I'm in front of computers all day at work, I'm sick of them. I don't even have a computer at home anymore, since my power supply died a few months ago. I'd periodically be 30-40 logs behind for months, catch up during a day of massive log writing, only to fall behind again in another week. I feel guilty not writing sufficiently long logs so when I didn't have a long stretch of time I'd put it off, more finds would accumulate, and the task would seem larger and more daunting, and eventually by the time I decided I needed to catch up, I'd forgotten all of the interesting things I wanted to say and ended up leaving a more generic log anyway. When I'm making plans, I still come across caches I know I found but I never logged (I can easily tell b/c my boyfriends logs will include the line "found with thirstymick"). My iPhone changed this, now I can log the cache when I find it, there's no need to figure out later which ones I found because the app will tell me which one I'm standing on top of, and I remember details because I'm still there! Looking at a couple of my finds that I logged with the phone, my logs might be a little shorter than they would have been if I were responsible about logging my finds with a keyboard, but they don't seem any shorter than the vast majority of other peoples logs on the same caches. Outstanding caches or ones with particularly interesting stories will get noted and logged at a computer (sometimes a cache I didn't even find needs two logs), usually these are the ones I don't forget to log, stories I can't wait to tell. If I accidentally find an uninteresting parking lot hide, it'll get a "TFTC" whether I use the app or a computer. For actual navigating, the official GC app drains the battery so fast and is so inaccurate & frustrating, i usually use my colorado to locate & the app to log (other location apps seem to be worlds better at updating my location as I move), although when I don't have a plan, the app can be great for coming up with one. The only time my logs mention the iPhone are when it's part of the story.. if I'm using it to navigate and getting frustrated or when it's a spontaneous find that I wouldn't have known about if not for the phone. All in all, I think the phone and the app have improved my logging, but that's just me.
  2. For as excited as I was for this coin featuring the most spectacularly beautiful place on the planet, I somehow managed to miss the reservation period anybody order extras for trading? I'm (away for work and) not sure when I'll be home next, but I have some of my personals with me, if anyone is interested Or if not, maybe we can work something out when I'm home again, all my traders are there.... ::crosses fingers::
  3. When I cache outside of the United States, I don't expect cache owners to translate their pages for me, just like I don't expect the waitress in the restaurant to know English, or anyone else I might encounter. I'm the traveler, the one who decided to visit a foreign country. While it's nice to run into someone I can speak English with, I certainly wouldn't expect it, or demand it. That being said, when I notice a traveler of mine has entered a new country, I'll go to it's page and translate the goal into the local language (using google translate, it's gotten A LOT better over the years), b/c again, my traveler is the foreigner outside of it's home country.
  4. Wow, those turned out awesome Anybody want to trade for my personal? I haven't bought a coin in awhile, but if no one wants to trade, I'll be buying one. Well actually, i may need to buy a pile of em either way. Really really great job on these, and I <3 the valley of the 10 peaks
  5. There are those who think that Wawayanda means 'Far, far away', or even 'Is this even on the same planet?". Atually, it is from the native peoples, and appears to mean "Water on the mountain'. Hope you solved Jockey Bear before your trek. Yeah, yikes. PolskiKrol and I thought we'd go for a nice hike in Ringwood yesterday. It was a gorgeous day. He probably won't post our 13mi loop since we didn't hit most of the caches we set out to (or maybe he will since he likes to brag ), what torture; two foot slush... at points it was up to my hips!
  6. Soy de un poco mas al norte, pero que es una idea divertida Espero que alguien de jersey sur puede ayudar! Me gustaria encontrar tanto buena suerte con el proyecto edit to add: he's from Malaga, Spain and looking for someone in South Jersey to help with a sister-cache type of placement in Malaga, NJ
  7. Wow, Not sure how I missed this a few months ago, but this is a must have, they look phenomenal! Looks like the yellow/orange version is the event version, and all the others will be on geoswag.com soon. Don't see em yet, but up above Mark said March, so in the next couple of weeks would be a good bet.
  8. Seems to be because George is the only one contributing to the thread anymore, and these are simply the kinds of hikes he plans. Feel free to add to it with some shorter suggestions! Pretty sure anybody who wants to is allowed to post in here
  9. Would it be mocking Hinduism or just using it's themes? If it's respectful. there have been a number of Christian coins. Since those were acceptable, I don't see why a Hindu themed coin would be rejected.

    A suggestion

I just noticed the notice and came over to this section of the forums to see if there were any threads about the message yet. This one looks like a good place to say; Thanks for the notice! This was a great way to get the message out to all of us!
  11. Yeah, I think that's what it comes down to. If somebody has enough respect to ask first, then I'll probably have no issue saying yes, or better yet "Please keep the gift coin, I'll send you something that will generate higher bids than that one" People have emergencies, reasons why they would want to sell of all their coins. I understand that, and in these cases I've seen this community come together and show so much support to each other. But then, I've also seen people come in here begging and begging for a gift, only to then turn around and sell it on ebay when not even facing an emergency. Thats just disrespectful. I don't think the gifter is being selfish to feel hurt, insulted, and used when that occurs.
  12. I'm confused.. Is there a plaque honoring the Marine near the cache? A lot of posts keep mentioning this plaque, but I re-read the OP and don't see anything about a plaque?
  13. Thanks I'm so flattered that you like it! Which reminds me, I still need to photograph that cool gift I got from you and post to the bragging thread Thank you!!
  14. While it's true that once you've given a gift away, what happens to it is out of your hands; it's disrespectful to the person who gave you the gift, to sell it. Just like the recipient can sell the gift if they want, the giver can lose respect for the recipient and choose somebody different for future gifts. In cases like mystery coins, somebody spent a lot of money to have them minted, expecting nothing in return (not even recognition!) but to put a smile on the faces of recipients. To turn around and sell it for a profit because you know that it's in high demand, is a pretty selfish, unappreciative act. Of course, I'm not talking about honest mistakes here, where somebody who hasn't been around for a long time accidentally sells something he's forgotten the original owner didn't want sold. Things happen. As far as my own go, I leave a note with the Copper ones I drop in caches that says please don't sell this. In most cases, I haven't traded anything for it (of about 20 I've left so far I took something once) and although it would be nice of the next finder to leave something to contribute to the cache in a positive way; I'm not expecting it to occur. I've left it as a gift and the cache is no worse off swag-wise than before I found it if the next person doesn't leave anything (I do wish they'd start mentioning the coins in their logs, however! I'd like to know who takes them, where they end up, but that's another topic for another thread..) I don't ask anything of traders b/c I'm getting something in exchange for it, I might as well be selling it, I'm just being paid in another coin instead of money. Gifts, I'd prefer not to see sold, it's disrespectful to the spirit of the gift. But of course, there's nothing I can do about it if they are. In most cases, I'll never know since I don't ever go to ebay. But if I found out, you can be sure, I'd think twice about future gifts. Of course, I also minted a version that is only to be sold. There are 15 of them, and they're fundraiser-only. Those would be the exact opposite. I'd be disappointed to find out they weren't sold!
  15. I agree with Brian, for your route, Secaucus Panorama is a must-do! Just make sure and find the trail, there is one! The route the CO recommends, as it turns out goes through private property (and involves some rock climbing) but there actually is a trail through the park up to it, which I probably wouldn't have expected considering what you're climbing. The trail is past the ballfields to the east.
  16. I feel I should mention this for those of you who don't already know George: I live with a nutbag. Those ridges are steep and rocky and separated by a swamp. Yes, I'm the jerk who littered a ridge with no trails with caches , and George and Wjgrun did prove it's technically feasable.. But, I certainly wouldn't recommend doing all of those in one day! (and I certainly didn't place them all in one day!) A more reasonable loop for a single day would be to park along Warwick turnpike near the BrianSnat cache: Lame Roadside Cache #121: Green Brook, GCZ73T and walk Clockwise to: GCN0BD CG1P094 GC1P08Z GCTGDQ GC1P095 GC1P091 GC1P096 and GC1P098 Most of these aren't too far from a trail, and it'll still be a pretty long loop. And it's a loop, not a zigzag
  17. When I was out there (I wasn't going specifically to cache, but looked at my gps as I hiked and drove to find the convenient ones) It seemed to be a lot less dense than other places, especially for Southern California. I hiked 6 miles for a single cache, a DNF at that... if you stop by hellhole canyon, by the way, the sign you will see informing you of a mountain lion that lives in the canyon? Yeah, that's not a joke. Beautiful destination though, I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time! Much better time to visit than when I did in October...it was about 115 degrees out! Supposedly the spring flowers are amazing.
  18. I have bear photos but none taken in NJ! Great video, Brian, I finally got a chance to watch it. Thanks for putting it together, looks awesome
  19. The backcountry site in the Badlands is free and first come first serve. It was pretty packed when we were there (August) but PolskiKrol and I did manage to find a spot just before sunset. It's not quite where you're headed but it's pretty close and well worth the side trip, in my opinion. Some very cool terrain. The first sight of the badlands was striking.... driving across I-90, glancing out the window you notice the gently rolling hill with ranches and homes, all of a sudden fall off into dusty striped red badlands. Definitely one of the neatest places I've been. On the way to the campsite, a herd of bison crossed the roadway one at a time. We stopped and watched and took a bazillion photos as they walked across the rough terrain single file up to and across the road and gathered waiting for each other on a patch of grass on the opposite side of the road Have an awesome trip!
  20. Usually I'm happy to see animals. PolskiKrol and I spent a long time watching and photographing the last bear we saw The scariest animal encounter I've had is when I did not see a mountain lion. It, however, saw me. I was alone in Anza Borrego, in California. Part 1 Part 2
  21. In situations like this, you can ask Groundspeak to de-activate the coin. In most cases, they won't do it, but if you accidentally activated a coin you don't have, they should be able to help.
  22. Maybe I'm posting again too soon for my updated word, but now I am: "me" Yes, me, I feel like myself again. Sipping tea and glazing over my work all morning, some switch just flipped about half an hour ago, im still feeling a little slow but the drained feeling has progressed to a calm, my focus is back. I'm looking out of much clearer eyes than I woke up with. I do believe I can handle the rest of this day. Maybe even finish everything I need to finish
  23. Sluggish.... It always takes me awhile to get back up to speed the morning after a migraine. I was hoping to stay late and get some work done last night when around 3pm my head exploded. I spent much of the afternoon in the bathroom throwing up before feeling safe to drive home. At which point I went to sleep for the next 14 hours. Now I'm trying to get some work done (obviously, by visiting the forums!), it just drains so much out of me. But I'm relieved the pain is gone. Thanks for the cointest Edit to add: Jackalgirl, I'm glad your daughter is recovering Sounds like you had an awful night too
