  1. I left a note with the listing stating that the container will be placed after the cache has been approved. Either way I expect to be placing the container this weekend. In this case it is not a big deal as the cache is easily accessible. It's been a while since I placed caches. Back then the approval was quite speedy, a matter of hours. Now I know that I shouldn't be concerned unless it takes well over a week to see a response to my listing.
  2. This is not a complaint, just need to adjust my expectations. I listed Green It Is on 3/18/2006. How long does it usually take for a new listing to be reviewed? Somehow I had 72 hours or less in mind. But obviously this isn't so. I know this is done by volunteers, so I am NOT asking that someone jump right now to do it. But I'd like to know what kind of time period I should exepct for this and future listings. Also, I really like to scout out my cache locations first, and get accurate coordinates. Then build the container and create the listing. Once the listing is reviewed and approved I'd like to get out there and place the container. Is that workable?
  3. Unfortunately this day and age you can get sued for virtually anything. If the other side has enough leverage you will probably settle even if the other party is wrong. Just because it makes financial sense to pay then go to court. That's life I guess. The insurance issue is a very valid one. It affects many organizations out there. Many volunteer organizations do not have a budget but organize to have a voice as a group. By not having insurance it exposes the executive to potential liability. What to do about it is really up to the OGA executive and what they feel comfortable with. I did get my question answered early on in this thread, thank you very much! It also cleared up the question what OGA does for someone in Northwestern Ontario. Here we seem to much more associate with Manitoba groups then Ontario groups. Southern organizations often do not address the concerns of the far North. Many Southern Ontarians don't have clue that there is another 1500km of Ontario past Northern Ontario, aka North Bay. Seeing that OGA works with Ontario Parks it makes sense to support OGA rather then a Manitoba organization. Thank you for answering my question.
  4. Perhaps a silly question. But what are the benefits of an OGA (Ontario Geocaching Association) membership?
  5. Really...??? An unsecured WiFi network with a broadcasting SSID is pretty much fair game. Especially if I expect free WiFi (Hotel, Coffeeshop, etc) in the area. If I see a bunch of linksys and unknowns I really don't care who's it is. The strongest unsecured signal with net access is my choice. If you don't want your WiFi used without permission use WEP, don't broadcast your SSID, protect your network ... I see WiFi access like trespassing on property. If you don't want me on your property build a fence, or post some sign, or make it obvious some other way that this is private property.
  6. A couple of AA Maglites with LED Upgrade do the job quite well.
  7. No heroic measures to find a cache for me. Taking along wife and boys (2 years and 3 years old) puts many caches out of reach. When I look in the cache direction and the 3 year old on my shoulders goes "I am scared" it is time to turn around. But some day, when they're older, we'll be back!!!
  8. My GPSMAP60 and GPSMAP60C have a 'Found' buttons. It changes the icon to easily see which caches have been found. There aren't enough caches here to fill the 500 waypoint memory. When caching close to home I simply load a new/updates set of waypoints to the GPS(s) before the hunt. It automagically updates old waypoint data to the new found status, coordinates and what not. When leaving on a road trip or returning I delete old waypoints first.
  9. How close is close? I am north of Thunder Bay... Adi VA3ADI
  10. This is great! I just need to get back out there ...
  11. I logged out of the forums AND out of geocaching.com. After I logged back in on both sites the Waymarking forums appeared. Not good it did, though, since no new categories are accepted by the looks of it.
  12. I understand that caches have to be placed a certain minimum distance apart. Once a cache is archived, does it make the area available for a new cache? I have the Misfit Lake cache. As indicated in the log entries, after the cache was placed someone turned the area into what appears to be a grave site. The cache has been relocated a short distance away. While I was updating the cache listing I realized that it would be best to remove tha cache alltogether. There are many nice locations nearby that have caching potential. I think the new location will be close but different enough from the old place to warrant a new cache and qualify for a new find. So can I place a cache a couple hundred feet away from Misfit Lake if it is archived?
  13. Doesn't paying for geocaching.com make me a premium member?
  14. So what is the process to get a subcategory added? The forum I get directed to from Waymarking.com gives me an error message.
  15. In the news today CBC News -Parks Canada bans treasure hunts.
  16. quote:Originally posted by Desert_Warrior:Thare many many areas where there STILL are not 15 caches. My second paragraph was a kind of re-hash. How woould you propose taking care of those areas? Personally, I would have been thrilled if someone volunteered to come to El PAso and place 15 caches to get the game started. It is a very generous thing to do. Or we can just let them drive to where the caches are. Not a good way to get them started. You would be creating a chicken and the egg kind of situation... You have an area with less than 15 caches. If someone from outside the area was to place caches, those caches would quite possibly be considered vacation caches. So nobody is going to place those 15 caches other than local cachers that may have only 1 or 2 finds. I found 3 caches before I placed my first. I am now at 7 finds and 5 hides. There are 17 caches within a 100 mile radius, I placed 5 of them, 1 seems lost and 4 require extended canoe travel or wings. Adi
  17. I reposted my original "couldn't find it" entry to the cache, at least the gist of it that I remember. I must say I have a concern with how the geocaching.com site handles logs. I understand the need for control for cache owners to delete undesirable logs. However, I think the log entry just as much belongs to the cache owner as it does to the person making the log entry. My idea was to track all my finds and misses via the website. Obviously I cannot do that if a log entry deleted by a cache owner also removes it from the "my cache page". Adi
  18. quote:Hmmm... maybe my standards are too high. Perhaps not. I think there's a place for not so well thought out caches in this world. But I like your definition and it is certainly a desirable goal, IMHO. Adi
  19. quote:Originally posted by Premo:Hi. i've tried to help get more people in my area to try geocaching bu so far no luck. is there any one with an idea?? I have a few people that are interested. Once the weather improves I hope to get them involved. We also need more caches, IMHO. Going out and actually finding a few caches got me hooked. Adi
  20. quote:Originally posted by welch:I would suggest you go over the "how to hide a cache" stuff, read other forum threads, and maybe ask a few questions. Been doing that but still have doubts about my ideas....
  21. quote:Originally posted by Markwell:And above all, as soon as you feel confident enough and have found a good number of caches*, place a whole lot of well thought out caches in various places around your area. Silly question perhaps, but what is a well thought out cache? Unfortunately I am in the same boat where there aren't a lot of caches in the area. I have to drive several hundred kilometers to find one or two. Is there a "think tank" or some where to discuss cache ideas, with participants that have a lot of experience and have a good feel for what works and doesn't work? I placed 4 caches so far. I really don't know what makes a good cache. The items, the location, how well or little it's hidden? There are just so many variables. Adi
  22. I have a cache, a new cache, where it says "HOLD CA:" in front of the cache name. I think that's the first time I have seen that. What does that mean? Adi
  23. Just wondering what size of hitchhiker attached to a travel bug is suitable. I have a small (small is highly subjective) stuffed animal I'd like to attach to a travel bug. The thing is 4 inches tall, is that too big? Adi
  24. quote:What's a reasonable amount of time? I'll say a month or two, max. I'd argue that. What about the different seasons? A cache I place in the summer may be inaccessible in the winter unless you own a snowmachine - I don't. So you couldn't find it in December but I won't be able to check it until April.... Adi
