  1. quote:Also there is no hunting in Harriman and Bear Mtn State Parks. It is however allowed in Minnewaska and Sterling State Forests. Just a little note on the side. I am out in the woods pretty much every other day, caching and other sports like biking and climbing and all I can say is just because it is not allowed or the hunting season is only such and such days, that does not mean S..T. I have seen at several different locations hunters shooting with their guns even though the season was not even open yet and twice on State Park land where it was prohibitet to hunt. I do not hunt but I do not have a problem with the people that doo. It is pretty unfortunate that the few idi.ts out there braking rules and regulations mess up the reputation of safe and responsible hunters. All in all, do not rely on Season dates and Hunting Prohibited signs, these two things are not bulled proof. ALWAYS RMEMBER: IT ONLY TAKES ONE IDI.T TO KILL! I am not writing this because I want to scare anyone here but to make people aware that the potential to be the target of a rule braking hunter is there, even though it is small but there nevertheless. Start September I am generally out in a orange safety west and I wear it until mid spring. So Long Eagleflyby

  3. I couldn't find anything on this sohere is my post. I would like to place some caches in the upper difficulty and terrain ranges. I am just worried that there is not that many people out there who will rise to the occasion. I would hate to place some hard ones only to find out no one gos out and looks for them. SO here is my question: WHAT ARE YOUR EXPERIENCES WITH DIFFICULT CACHES YOU PLACED? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you So Long Eagleflyby
  4. I just found my 50th cache yesterday even though my goal was to accomplishe that my the end of the year. I worked hard for this over the least 3 weeks most of those where found, some easyer than others but I have to admit that after finding 50 and placing 4 it is mostly the logging and getting feetback from people finding my hidden ones that keeps me doing it. I could go hiking and climbing, biking and kajaking, flying and exploring and have enough fun without finding a silly little treasure but then it is not about the stash anyways. For me it is also not for the high tech fix I need frequently, in the age of GPS navigation, Istrument approaches into airports and computer controlled traction systems on locomotives, there is enough tech injections in a day. All in all to see what other people thought and felt looking for and finding a cache is what makes it so interesting to me and I also have to admit, that I get impatient quickly when nothing happens in the area for a while. BUT and this is a BIG BUT I can see myself maybe some day getting less active but there will always be an occation where it wil be great to have Geocaching a a resource for a almost unlimited number of reasons, mainly because it is shows you more of your surrounding world than one would normaly go out to explore. I am glad this whole website with all its Geocachers and Members exists. You are all great. So Long Eagleflyby
  5. I have nit had this problem but I have read many posts on the same and it seems that all you need to do is to go to the Garmin Website and download the new Software version for the legend. You'll find it under Support and it is free. If nothing else works, contact Garmin and they will fix the problem really fast, theyr Customer service is pretty good. Good Luck So Long Eagleflyby
  6. Well while we're at it, we should also bann GPS unit's whil hiking, all they do is distract people from walking and then one wonders why there are so many rear enders and toe stumpers. Ban de darn things and people wil finally get their eyes back on track..or uuhhhh Well what ever...... So Long Eagleflyby
  7. I have been using rechargable batteries since the mid eighties and since they came out with the NIMH there is definetly no reason not to go for them. All in all you get a carger for your 12V outlet in your car and one for home and about 8 to 12 NIMH's depending on how much you use them and off you go. A little tip: Keep 2 little containers, one labled "Charged" and the other "Used" that will keep them organized. Also, try not to mix different types of batteries as this could harm your electronic devices. The problem with the batterie indicators is not all that big of a deal, most manufacturers let you choose the batterie type in the device you intend to use them, Garmin has just recently updated the Soft Ware for the VISTA and some other units to accomodate the different batterie types. So Long Eagleflyby
  8. I can't promise anything because I frequently travel into the US and Germany but if I am arround, count me in as a helper. If I know far enough in advance, I might even be able to move some dates and hold the time of the event open. I'll keep looking in here to see about the details. So Long Eagleflyby
  9. That is a pretty neat idea you had there. I guess it would be a nice thing to sell at Geoevents and so forth. I have to say though that there is no way I would pay more than $15 for that staf. For the price you want to sell it for you can get a pretty decent set of aluminum hiking poles from Leki with spring action to protect your joints and these are even variable in size from 50 centimetres to 140cm. Oh, by the way...I have no ties to Leki, but my whife has bought a set and she is totally happy with them. But like one of the posts before said, good luck with them Actually I am sure you won't need that cause there is always a market for memorabilia and stuff So Long Eagleflyby

    Form letter

I think that Maky's Idea is great, I am sure that there are many questions and issues that need to be answered and figured out with his idea but hey, the idea is what great things originate from. I have found some TB's with a huge laminated card attached to them explaining the whole carfaffel of how TB's work, where to log them and so on and so on....There is only one problem, most people won't read it. I work for a big company instructing people in servicing and mantaining modern computer controlled lokomotives and it is amaizing to see how little people want to read in our corses. So one can try to cram it down their troats or just make it so simple that it all boils down to 4-5 lines in highlighted letterig. I have not thought about it all that much yet but all in all I am pretty much prepared to loose most of my TB's to begin with. Lets face it, it is hard enough to get people to do things when you are standing right in front of them so doing that over hundreds and thousands of miles is nearly impossible. Sure most of us are exited to move a TB however, there are enough one time cachers out there that couldn't care less about the TB's mission. But the majority I believe get's the bugs out there even if it does take a friendly geminder or two. So Long Eagleflyby
  11. I voted to wach it as well. I think it is sort of an edgy thing but if this continues next thing you know, we are going to find people having all their friends get a geo account and then the whole family will log a travel bug several dozend times a day....or we start playing ping pong back and forth between 2 caches. I think there needs to be more regulatory action taken on these Top Ten lists. And of corse to use the famous words of many fellow cachers...That's just my humble opinion. So Long Eagleflyby
  12. I agree with BrianSnat, i the greater NY/NJ areas there is a lot of cacheing to do and I am pretty sure that the life cicle of geocachers has something to do with diversity. I am pretty sure that there are also a lot of Cachers that graze up all the close cahes arround there home towns and then eventually get to the point where they don't want to drive any further for caching. I fortunately travel frequently between New York,Canada and Germany so there is a lot of Caching to do. However I have to admit, when I was in Germany earlier this fall it was 2 hours and 30 min. driving distance to the nearest cache one way and the next one was another hour further so needless to say, I didn't get a lot in. I feel that as long as there are Geocachers like Ttepee and JohnBoy in the area the whole thing is going to stay interesting. So Long Eagleflyby
  13. Sounds good to me, it is pretty unfortunate that there are people out there who do not take the safety of others into account. But who knows, maybe the TB owner doesn't even know about this potentiol danger and wonders why he has trouble now reading the coordinates off his GPS. [] Hopfully this is not the case though. So Long [] Eagleflyby
  14. Check this out. I hope that is at least a little step in the right direction...... So Long [] Eagleflyby
  15. Thank you everybody for the input. I appreciate it. I guess all together it is everyones own decision on what to do here. All in all I can only say that this is e rally cool forum because there seems to be sooo little senseless arguing. Mostly everyone in here seems to me at lest to be very thoughtfull. The Cache in / Trash out events are one of the best examples for it. Thanks again...... So Long [] Eagleflyby
  16. Hello everyone. 1.) Why do people not use the back side of the pages in the log books, or just very rarely? Seems like an awfull wast of paper to me. Is that a unwritten law or just something that no one really cares about?[] 2.) So many caches seem wet and the containers really crappy, there is mold and dirt in them. I can understand that not everybody wants to buy the ammo cans, sometimes they are just too big, however, I found that Rubbermaid makes really nice watertight containers where the sealing part of the box is a rubber like material, these boxes are available in all sorts of sizes and are pretty inexpensive, thy are clear and the rubber like seal is blue. (No I have no ties to Rubbermaid.) Just something to consider when going out shopping next time. I am sure this must have been discussed at an earlyer point of the Geocaching history however I could not find anything on it. So Long: Eagleflyby
  17. Hallo Gert. I assume you speak Deutsch? Du kannst TB's in England bestellen. Da sind die zwar doppelt so teuer aber die Versandkosten sowie -dauer sollten betraechtlich kuerzer sein. Hier die Addressen: Fingertech GPS Systems Viel Spass.....eagleflyby

  19. Since we are talking Vista here I guess it is o.k. to throw this in here. I have recently bought a Vista and noticed right away that it seems pretty picky in regards of lokation however, the main problem I have, is that the unit shows me mostly east in relation to the map. e.g. I am on a road northbound and the GPS shows me about 500' to the right. Or I am west of some RR Tracks and it shows me east. When I take waypoints with the GPS and then transfer them onto a Topomap on my computer everything is on the Spot. It almost seems as if the base map in the GPS was shifted. Also, is there some sort of test one can do with a fixed check point of some sort, lets say you go to a spot and there is a set of coordinates that the GPS has to show and if it is off by a certain tolerance?? then it is to be sent back to Garmin?? Thanks for any help.

  25. I just did my first Geocache today and found this cool looking Geocoin. Moun10Bike I have been snooping through the Groundspeak site to find where I can get a coin like that as my own TB but all I can find are these Tags. What is the deal with that. I am looking foreward to placing the Coin in Europe, the person that this bug belongs to is going to be pretty amaized at how far it will go. It originated in Washington State, I found it in New York and it'll be put in a cache in Germany by me. But I would realy like to get some of these coins, I preffer them to the tags. Any help is appreciated.
