  1. A scenario: I'm flying east in a plane on the left side of the plane which means I'm looking to the north from my seat. I look down and see land but no major highway. On my GPSr, I see my position as being south of, say, Interstate 80. Given my postion on the GPSr, I should be looking down and seeing the highway. I can't see the highway even looking as straight down as I can. I've chalked this up to the fact the few satellites I'm receiving are all on my side of the plane and their angle pointing down at me would position me south of my real position. However, the GPS experts I have asked say that even those few satellites I'm receiving signals should accurately indicate where I am regardless of the fact that I'm seven miles up in the air and traveling over 500 miles per hour. I have a Garmen emap. Has anyone else had similar experiences? Could there be a parallax issue with less expensive/smaller GPSr's? Hal
  2. Oh. come on. It's just plain (plane?) interesting. I often look down and wonder what city or area I'm looking at. It's a learning experience. It's fun to guess and then verify. Sure it isn't required for me to be able to get through the trip, but it is an excellent way to relieve the tedium of just sitting for a few hours.
  3. If having 100 GPSr's being used on a plane would have no effect on the electronics of the pilot's instruments, then: How can we, as those who enjoy using our GPSr's on a plane, appropriately "encourage" (lobby) the FAA to allow (mandate?) GPSr's to be allowed to be used on all airline flights? I won't quibble about the 10 minute rule, but it would be nice to be able to use them during take off and landings if that was safe. Is there a name or committee at the FAA that we could write via postal mail or email to to start getting the idea started? Could this be done through elected officials -- would writing our congressman help? Does anyone really care enough to even bother trying to do this type of thing? Hal Huntley
  4. I hope they got a handle on that discrepancy before they landed! I think the pilots are flying using barametric altitude which varies slightly from what is showing on a GPSr. Hal
  5. I've read quite a few of the discussions about having a GPSr on an airplane. I know the power is very low and that it is an individual airline and pilot decision on being able to use one. The common sense is to follow the airline rule but it is generally considered safe if no rule can be found. But suppose the airline says it's fine to use a GPSr on the plane and then 100 people show up and turn on their receivers. Would having that many receivers being on have a potential problem with the onboard electronics of the plane? Is this perhaps a reason why the airlines say "no" to using our GPS on the plane? 6. United used to allow GPSR's and when I last flew with them, I noticed that their inflight magazine now states that it prohibits them. A change from the old days. Delta does allow them. I never thought to ask the pilot. I rarely see them while boarding, so I'll just go by what the magazine says. If nothing is stated, I pull it out. Hal
  7. I was looking for a cache today and could not find it. I went looking on the geocaching pages just now and could not find its existance. I tried finding it by lat/lon coordinates, but it was not listed. I was thinking it would be easier to find it by the name of the person's profile name. I think people in a particular area would like to see all available by those who become somewhat known to the geocaching community. What's the thought of starting a search method on the pages by profile name? I know this will mean more work for the webmasters. 8. I became a charter member when I started. It takes a lot of work to maintain these pages. The maintainers have done an excellent job in setting things up and keeping things going. I'd recommend becoming a charter member. Hal
