I can understand people saying why would you want to see archived ones in the list, they are no longer there ! but you always had the ability to filter them out from the complete list if you only wanted to look at active ones.

There are times I go back through event caches to see if people have posted new photos. but I can't even do that now.

  2. I've always enjoyed travel trivia games... so I did enjoy this one. But that's just me. It did take a bit to figure out how to submit a guess. The one where I got dropped into the middle of a forest was a bit tough, but I got it before the time ran out.

It is an interesting concept to promote various locations around the world, but its definitely not for everyone.

  3. What is the cut off for banning caches in countries? Depending on where you get your information, there are over 100 armed conflicts in the world right now. Should caches be banned in all countries involved in armed conflicts?

Groundspeak isn't in a position to influence world policies. This is a hobby for average people. I highly doubt areas around active conflict areas are getting new caches placed.

Curiosity got me looking... it looks likes there are only 29 active caches in Ukraine that were placed in the past two years, and most of those where placed far away from the current unrest. And, looking at all of Russia, there are relatively few caches already, considering the size and population.

  4. I'm curious on the actually combination of numbers you'd need to brute force anything. And no I'm not advocating doing it.

All the math below could be totally wrong, if I've made a bad assumption along the way.

In a format of North AB CD.EFG West HI JK.LMN

And taking into consideration the two mile radius, can you always assume ABC and HIJ, leaving you only needing to brute force  the D.EFG and K.LMN portion?

There are 10 possibilities for each number, and this is where I'm not sure of the math. For the North you have 10 to the 4th power for a total of 10,000 combination. You'd also have this for the West. I'm just not sure how to come up with a total set of combination for North and West.

Regardless, even if you knew West and were trying to brute force just north, with only 10 tries per session, you'd need a max of 1000 sessions. At 10 minutes per session that is almost 7 days to run through all the combinations.

  5. I've often wondered how some puzzle caches keep up with advancement in technology or information. A building sign 15 years ago could show up on Google Street View today. A historic sign 10 years ago could appear in a database today. Its not necessarily a bad thing though. Someone that might not otherwise have the means to make it out to solve a puzzle, might now be able to. I know people that love to solve puzzles that they have no intention of actually finding them.

I've even done some puzzles that have used information you could only get from satellite views.

To followup - it's confirmed still recently that iOS apps do not have detailed access to satellite info, and any apps that show things like "satellite count" are estimating and 'guesstimating' based on the information that the API from the OS provides. This thread talks a bit about whether apps can access such data (and even mentions the aforementioned diagnostic app). There isn't yet a response from the user who said he'd ask the developer how they managed to provide the satellite count value if by some other indirect means.  Without having a jailbroken phone, I don't think Apple would knowingly permit a 'loophole' around something they seem extremely closed about since iPhone first introduced GPS capability.  Likewise, other apps for years have shown a 'satellite count' pseudo variable based on estimations from other gps readings, not based on a hard actual number provided by the device's OS.

Thank you for this information. I use an app that does display a read count. I usually let it get into the hundreds before I start the process over again. Its nice to know that the numbers are only an estimate.

  7. As a smartphone user exclusively to cache, it is NOT the smartphone. I've never owned a GPSr, and have been caching for 10 years. While I haven't hidden a lot of caches, I've participated in Snag The Tag. I've hidden over 50 tags and have only had 1 complaint about my coordinates. Please don't lump all smartphone users together. Some of us know what we are doing.

I'm sure Keystone will pop up shortly remind us to stay on topic.

    Agreed... on both.

I just did a challenge cache exactly like that: CO still very active, checker findable on Project GC, but NO LINK so I did it all by "hand"/analog before I remembered I could search by GC number. SIGH.

If its an older challenge (Pre Checkers), the CO might not even be aware that a checker exists, or know how to link it to the cache page. I've seen a several checker requests that start with "This isn't my challenge, but can a checker be made for...."
