  1. We never log a DNF unless we look for it 3 times. Normally we find it on our 2nd search. But we had that one that was driving us crazy. We tried it on our 2nd day of caching..no go..went back a few weeks later after we had many more smilies under our belts...no go. We were just sure it was missing and waiting few more weeks, and we gave it our last and final go...I found it right out of the car. It was in a spot that we both swear we had looked before. Either it was not there then or we were blind as bats. Not sure what the case was but we were very happy to get that find. Now were are focusing on the very first cache we looked for. We did not find it but found the second one, but that first cache is on the list to go back for...we are just gonna wait until fall and less bugs and greenery to deal with, and we will find that one too. WE WILL FIND IT!!! LOL!
  2. I had read a story in our local fish wrap. It sounded interesting. We had been looking for something to get our rear ends up off the couch, after Stew dying on me at the end of Feb. (don't worry they brought him back and he isn't a zombie!) we had to quit drinking beer...we were getting really bored, this was in June 2013 I suggested we give it a try, so we looked it up on a friday evening and went out that next day. As everyone says...we were hooked. When they announced the 31 days of caching challenge, we were ready and eager to do it! Until August 24....I guess it was my turn to try the dying thing and I had a heart attack, followed up with a 6 bypass open heart surgery. (I am not a zombie either!) lol My husband knowing how important the challenge was to me, managed to get out and finish the finds for the rest of the month for us while I hung out in the hospital recovering! Gosh, I love that fellow! We just celebrated out 21st anniversary Oct. 4th, we have so much to be thankful for this year, with us both having the death scare. We had to do something special to celebrate......We went out caching!!! Love this game!
  3. We started geocaching in June of this year so the August challenge seemed ideal. We both made sure we always went out and found one for the day even if we were tired, or it was raining or whatever. We really wanted to meet this challenge! However, on August 24th, I had a heart attack. I am only 43 and I thought in good shape, but I was a smoker (notice the WAS!) and I have lots of family history of heart disease. I ended up having a 6 by pass surgery on August 25th. I want to thank the love of my life, my husband Stew for knowing how important this streak was, and for making sure to keep it going. That Saturday (24th) he went across the street from the hospital to grab one. Same thing for the day of my surgery. He made sure to go out and grab one on his way to visit me every day to keep this going! I am happy to say, he did it. and we managed to get the 31 days of geocaching! I am also happy to say I have healed up well and we just went out this weekend and did our first caching since this darn heart issue! I love this game, and I love my hubby! Lana... (stewlana)
  4. make sure to calibrate it or it will throw you way off! check under the app tools or settings to do this.
  5. C:geo app is the way to go. along with GPS Status. both apps are free and seem to work really well! Just don't forget to calibrate your radar!
  6. use C:geo. this is a free app. if I know we are going to be in a location with no cell service. I store the caches I know we want to find in the "store to phone" section. then, when we are out, I can pull up the cache info with no issues as well as still use my radar (GPS Status also free) C:geo works with geocaching.com and many other cache sites. It is super easy and I love being able to log our finds on our phone right then and there. If we are out of service area, it saves the log info, including date and time until we get into an area with service. It works for us.
  7. I can't answer your question, but this might make your life easier! if you have a smartphone, (not sure about iphones this if for droids) Go to the app store and upload C:geo. this is a free app and works with geocaching.com and other caching sites. and GPS Status (also free) it works with C:geo for a radar. After you have uploaded these and imput your log in information for geocaching.com. this app will work for you just like the internet site (pretty much.) To get started after uploading these apps you need to turn your GPS on on your phone and open the GPS Status app and calibrate your phone (click menu and select tools). Be sure to do this outside and not near a running car. (not sure why but i guess a running car messes it up). After that is done, close the GPS app, and open the c:geo app. it will log you in and you can click on live map. this will show you all the caches near you, ones your have found and ones you have hid (smiley faces and all!). Find one on the map and click on it. it will open a box and you can click on more details. The next screen will give you the cache info, scroll over and you have the infomation page and hint section, the next page is the log page and the following is images if any have been taken. When you go back to the main page, click your menu button, you will see options one is radar, click that when you are at the cache location and it will get you withing 10 feet of the cache. We use the live map while driving around and when one pops up, we open the cache and read the details and logs, when we get there we open the radar. When we find it, I log the find right then and there on my phone while my hubby signs the log sheet in the cache. and done! So simple and so easy.
  8. My husband and I took up geocaching after reading an article that was in our local "Free Press" fish wrap. The author happens to be the high school english teacher and his wife is with the post office. I wondered what the heck geocaching was, so I looked it up. We were looking for something to do besides sit on our rear ends on the couch. Since we both quit drinking (6 months sober as of 8/16!) we needed something to do. This sounded interesting, so we researched it and decided to give it a try. This was in June. We are now premium members and to date we have 77 finds and have 13 hides! We are totally hooked and loving it. Our daughter at home (a sophmore) thinks it is stupid, and honestly any time she has came with us for a quick find, we DON'T find it mainly because she is waiting impatiently in the car wanting to go home and see her boyfriend or gal pals. So she just stays home, we run out and cache and everyone is happy. Our oldest daughter is interested, but doesn't want to join us, she thinks it needs to be a "Mom & Dad" thing, but she is always on the look out for a cool hiding spot for us to place one. I have told anyone that would listen to me how much fun this "silly" game/hobby is. I know of several families that have started caching because of my rambling! LOL I could care less what "muggles" think. We love the adventure and are very happy that reading a little article has led to a super fun thing to pass our time with! stewlana
  9. That is kinda what I was thinking, but it really threw me I had gotten excited that another one of ours was found only to be disappointed. Thanks for the answers!
  10. Hi, we are fairly new to this fun game but i do have a question. With one of our hides, I recieved an email yesterday that it was found. GC4GX6N "Edward Butts" The finders name is souvenir_collector here is their profile info http://coord.info/PR8X701. When I pulled up this cache to read what they put in the log, there is nothing there. When I pulled up this persons profile, it showed they became a member yesterday (8/6/13). I looked then under the geocaches tab to see the finds/hides for them, there is nothing there. (I looked again today and still blank) But,when I look at the souvenirs for this person yesterday the page is full of them. but then when I looked again today, the souvenir page on them is now empty How can someone become a member in one day, show no finds on their profile and have a full page of souvenirs one day and none the next?? Am I missing something? I did notice that today it does say that the email feature has been disabled because this person is locked. Does this mean it was all bogus?? Just wanting to clarify. It is just wierd.
