  1. Thanks Spamiam for your constructive response. I personally found it informative and of value. It is nice when people provide reasoned, relevant and constructive answers. Shows some goodwill and hopefully leads to improved relationships and enjoyment of the game. That said, I thought Geowombat also brought up some points in a constructive maner which warrant discussing. It would be good to see some intelligent and thoughtful comment on those as well. Regards Andrew
  2. I agree. Did you find any good caches this weekend? I was to busy to get out. G'day Runaround No such luck my end. Had to do some work Saturday, wedding Saturday night but did get to a caching event on Sunday. Good to put faces to names in the local area. Was my first event and will make the effort in future. Where I am in Western Australia it is coming up to mid Summer so it is pretty dadgum hot, thus limiting one's caching activities. Bring on winter! Regards Andrew
  3. I don't necessary agree with the moderator's actions or his comments ... and I am not comfortable with Richary's post either, but I don't think anything is to be gained by name calling or launching into the poster, whichever side they come from. Surly there is room for civilised discussion? Maybe some goodwill on both sides? There have been some interesting posts in this part of the forum of late and in other parts where folks need assistance or have questions. Maybe some of the negative energy floating around here could be put to good use in those other threads spreading some goodwill instead. How about that? Regards Andrew
  4. G'day I assume you are trying to enter your gc.com user ID? If so go to Options ==> Tools ==> General and click on Use gc.com user ID# and enter just the number there. Once you have done that click the ok button. You might find it easier to enter your gc.com caching team name. This is the approach I have taken. BTW Clyde hangs out and generally responds very quickly to the GSAK suppport forum in Geocaching Australia forums. It can be found at http://forum.geocaching.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=534. As I understand it you need to join the forum to access the thread. Hope this helps. Regards Andrew
  5. G'day First up I recommend reading the advice pages at http://gpsinformation.net/ which provides some good advice on GPSr features for first-time users. Second with the eXplorist 100 as I understand it there is no data input/output, i.e., can't connect to your computer. So unless you plan on manually entering all those geocache coordinates, it is pretty dadgum useless for geocaching. This may also apply to the eXplorist 200 as the specs suggest no data input/output. Regards Andrew
  6. G'day We have a Travel Bug Hotel here in Perth, Western Australia that I think fits the description you are talking about. The thing with this hotel is that is located in a very popular spot, easily got to by visitors and locals. It seems to work okay and is popular for dropping off and picking up TB that need to be moved on. Regards Andrew
  7. G'day Not a comparision, but BackpackGearTest.org did test the SporTrak and SporTrak Colour [2003 model] over a six month usage period. The reports can be found at http://www.backpackgeartest.org/reviews/Na...Map%20Gear/GPS/. You might find them useful in helping you make your decision. Good luck Regards Andrew
  8. G'day I am sure you will get good advice here, but you may also find the test reports and Owner Reviews at BackpackGearTest.org worth reading. The GPSr ones can be found at http://www.backpackgeartest.org/reviews/Na...Map%20Gear/GPS/. Also GPSInformation.net is a good resource. It is at http://gpsinformation.net. Have fun with your new toy when you get it Regards Andrew
  9. G'day I have a Geko 301 and it don't have this feature, and I suspect the same would apply to the Geko 201. That said, I wouldn't think it would be a problem. When I first got my Geko it locked pretty quick as I would expect and it should do the same wherever I go, assuming reasonable satellite coverage. Have fun. Andrew
  10. Suppose the owner has not logged onto GC in months and their cache has fallen into disrepair. Should we not be able to fix a cache by adding a new container, or a new logbox and plastic bag? Interesting. Rereading Lemon Fresh Dog's post I don't see anywhere cache maintenance as distinct from cache removal was frowned upon. This topic is about cache removal, not cache maintenance along the lines you have mentioned. I would be surprised if their is strong objections to cache mainteance as opposed to cache removal. Regards Andrew
  11. I agree 100%, as long as both the finder's approach and the hider's (owner's) wishers are taking into considertion. After all both parties are involved in the game piece. Andrew And in this case, it doesn't take the finder's into consideration. Just adds a stat for the hider and annoys those who have it showing up on their "nearest" list, and wasting space in their Pocket Query (which they're paying for, BTW) Yeah, well some times life involves some little inconviences. But, really is that big an issue to get upset over? Gee there are some far more serious issues in the world than this. Personally, I have some archived caches that show up on my "nearest list." Do I spit the dummy at gc.com over it? No, I move on .... like it really isn't that big an issue. Surely, the game should be big enough to allow diversity in play? All that said, I use GSAK, so the "nearest list" issue isn't a problem for me. As regards my pocket query ... really can't get that upset about it. Cheers Andrew
  12. Not wanting to get into a debate about the rights and wrongs of this travel bug, so I won't. However, assuming you go with it, I would suggest removing the negative comments about moral bankruptcy. To me, it undos the good you are trying to do with the travel bug. I would just suggest keeping the message postive. Good luck. Andrew
  13. I agree 100%, as long as both the finder's approach and the hider's (owner's) wishers are taking into considertion. After all both parties are involved in the game piece. Andrew
  14. I don't have a problem with folks not wanting to log caches or not logging caches as long as they are not mine . You see I go to a lot of trouble to place my caches, so I don't see it as a big ask for those who then find them to log them. Therefore I ask that logs be made on gc.com in my cache page. That way, those not into logging know where I am coming from and can avoid my caches . Simple really. Andrew
  15. I agree. This is the approach I take and actually did this past week for an out of state owner. The cache was there, even though two experienced geocachers had not found it. The second DNF had suggested archieving! Regards Andrew
  16. Mmm. I don't think it should make a difference. To me a basic courtesy is to contact the owner or let the owner make the decision. If you had done this to one of mine I would not be happy at all. If a cache of mine gets muggled, I go out and revisit the cache area and look at my options - rehiding the cache maybe close by, changing to a micro or virtual or archiving. But the key point is, it is my decision. I am the one who went to the trouble of putting the cache together and getting it out there. To me is it a basic courtesy to notify the owner of my experience and let them decided. I don't assume that I am in a position to make those sorts of decisions about others caches. Regards Andrew
  17. There are or is at least one Travel Bug Graveyard that I am know of in Australia. It is at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCHGX5. Andrew
  18. That is my thinking as well. If I have a choice I place normal (regular) cache, but if it is a nice area, but an area where I can't place a regular cache then I consider a micro or as a last resort a virtual. Each to thier own and then folks can search for them as they chose. For example I have a micro - http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...9e-4397856b4706 and nearby a normal cache - http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...51-99f900931689. Best of both worlds! But where the micro is, it is not possible to hide a normal cache ... a small area of manicured gardens. Regards Andrew
  19. Glad to see something postive has happened. Sorry it had come as a result of all the disquiet in the forums here and eslewhere. It should have happened without all the agro. Sad when there is some much hurt as a result of this diaster. Regards Andrew
  20. Hi I have just completed testing of the MSR OverLand Carbon for BackpackGearTest.org and they are very nice indeed, but expensive. You can read Test Reports and Owner Reviews on various poles at http://www.backpackgeartest.org/reviews/Tr...%20Poles/Poles/ and the reports on the MSR ones at http://www.backpackgeartest.org/reviews/Tr...rLand%20Carbon/. Hope this helps. Regards Andrew A two pole convert
  21. Then a link on the main Geocaching.com page would have been more appropriate than a cache submission. Caches that solicit, no matter how noble the cause, are against the guidelines. You should go back and read Bryan Roth's note again. Then there would have been a debate about which charity to link to Andrew
  22. It's disturbing how a disaster occurs somewhere in the world, and the US is on the list of countries sending money. Both goverment, business, and private citizens help out and donate. However, when a disaster occurs on US soil, the world stands back and watches us take care of it ourselves. That is not true at all. Just two examples, September 11, 2001. Another is the bush fires in 2003/2004 [?] where Australian firefighters traveled to the US and assisted in relief efforts and fighthing fires. I really see little to be gained from bashing either side. Such degenerative comments only reflect poorly on the poster, whether they are in the USA or Australia or Mongolia! Regards Andrew
  23. I don't know what the basis of that claim is, but I would suggest that Australians (and I am a New Zealander) would have given without question out of their own pockets. <p> Andrew
