  1. Here's your first point: 36° 51.00' N. lat. 121° 56.00' W. long. Here's how Mapsource wants to see it: N36 51.000 W121 56.000 - fieldkat ...
  2. Has anyone played around much with this? I tried the demo version. It created the image okay--really slow redraw. Didn't get a chance yet to tried out in the woods. Worth the $20 for the full version? (That's a tank...er, half...um, a third of a tank of gas) ...
  3. You can set it to record a track every 10 feet, but you won't like what you'll have to do. First you go to Setup-Units-Distance/Speed and then choose Yards. Now go to the Track Log Setup page, choose Distance for the Record Method, and then set 3.33 yards as the Interval. Your track points will be recorded every 10 feet and you will go insane with all your distances displayed in yards. I would only recommend doing this if you actually need a track log with points every 10 feet. I keep my 60CSx set for Auto and Most Often. When ditty-bopping in the woods or paddling the canoe or whatever, I've found that the track points are recorded at varying intervals, but with a good amount of detail. - fieldkat ...
  4. This is a common complaint of 60CSx users that have used or upgraded from the color Etrex units. It helps to tilt the 60CSx slightly away from you instead of looking straight on at it, but the screen still won't have the brightness that your Etrex had. There have been many past posts complaining about the 60CSx's screen. From some of the lastest reports on the Colorado that are just being posted, it sounds as if the Colorado's screen is not as bright as the 60CSx without any back ligthing on. I figured that was the case. Thanks for confirming it. - fieldkat ...
  5. Hey. I have had my GPSmap 60CSx for a few weeks now. I am very pleased with it except for the colors looking a little weak compared to my 2-year old eTrex Legend C. The Legend C's colors are much richer. I'm not sure if this is just how it is or if there is a problem with the 60CSx. The 60CSx is quite readable, so it's not that big of a problem. I'm just used to, and prefer, the richer, more saturated colors. Has anyone had this problem with their GPSmap 60C(S)(x)? Is there any chance that there is a way to tweak the colors? - fieldkat
  6. A question on the show 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire' asked which is the flatest state, measuring highest and lowest points in the state. Florida was it. I don't remember if the contestant chose right. The highest point in Florida practically in Alabama. ...
  7. So, how much for the Chevy TPI Fuel Injection Swappers Guide? Just kidding. ...
  8. Hey. I bought my soon-to-be six year old daughter a refurbished Geko 301 for her upcoming birthday. It is small, simple, well priced, has a one-year warranty, WAAS-enabled, and has an electronic compass. I was torn between the Geko and an eTrex, but the size, compass, and lack of a prone-to-peel rubber gasket were the deciding factors. My question is for those who own and use Gekos. What do you use as a holster/protective case? The Garmin stretch holster looks like a piece of nylon webbing with a rubber band sewn on. I see that Glisson carries one, but I wasn't impressed with the one I got for my old Venture. (Pressing the buttons through the vinyl wasn’t too smooth for me and my sausage-like fingers.) I would like something that will protect it and still allow use while in the case, plus a spot to hook a lanyard. I’m starting to look at cell phone cases. Any suggestions? -- Fieldkat ...
  9. OK The lone trail.shp file you sent me produced the same error you got. GPS TrackMaker probably needs one of the other files that was included in the Trail shapefile package. Be sure these other files are in the same folder as the trail.shp file when you open it in TrackMaker. If you have all the files in the same folder and it still comes up with the error try downloading the Trail shapefiles again from the source...they could have been corrupted. After trying the above and you still have trouble email me all the files from the Trail Shapefile package cf-700 at hotmail dot com That error is most likely because the shapefile is probably using UTM coords. ...
  10. Last year, I was researching trail data for Saguaro National Park in Tucson, AZ, to make my own custom GPS maps. I went to the NPS GIS page and downloaded their trail data file. I was tickled and slightly annoyed that it was a digitized version of the NG Trails Illustrated map of the park. It's a really good map, but based on some earlier hikes with my GPS, it wasn't as accurate as I would've liked. (I know that they had recently collected accurate data, but it wasn't a priority to make it available to the public.) - Fieldkat ..
  11. It pretty much boils down to whether or not offering detailed trail maps would be profitable to the GPS manufacturers. I've seen new NG Trails Illustrated paper (well, plastic) maps being offered only when an area became popular enough to create a profitable demand. Good ol' capitalism at work! So, until the trails in central Florida become so popular that enough hikers with GPS receivers demand detailed maps from Garmin, I'll have to make my own. (And I honestly hope that those trails will never become that popular.) - Fieldkat ...
  12. Thanks--that was it. The date/time bar would set itself to match the oldest track and not show the newer ones. I just changed the show time setting in the View menu. Now I can see all the loaded tracks. Thanks again! ...
  13. Hello. I remember being able to view all of my imported GPS tracks at the same time in previous versions of Google Earth. Ever since I've ran the last beta and now version 4, I can only get one to be visible at a time despite having all of their boxes checked. Is there something I need to do to get all my tracks in view? ...
  14. If you have a more current version of MapSource, then open the file with the track and go to View>View in Google Earth. That will trigger the GE application to open with your data shown. OR, save track data as a GPX file, open GE, and drag & drop GPX file into GE window. (You can also do the File>Open thing if you prefer.) - Fieldkat ...
  15. Hello. I have Excel 97, so please keep that in mind if some things don't jive with your version of Excel. Highlight the column with the lat/lon data. Go to Data>Text to Columns. Choose the Fixed Width radio button and click Next. Now move/add column break lines in the Data Preview window to set how you want the column broken into new columns. Click next to adjust the data format and/or click Finish. ...

  17. Kerry - The Legend C talks to the computer via USB. I would suggest that you make sure that the Garmin USB drivers have been installed. Then see if the Legend C can communicate with the Mapsource. I don't have GSAK, but most GPS applications that have USB capabilities have a USB check box somewhere in the communication preferences. You need to check that instead of a com port. - Trailkat ...
  18. Um, I wasn't to impressed with it. It had a bit about making your own cables and battery packs. Some about reradiating antennas, hard resets, and such. Go find the book on amazon.com and do the "search inside" feature. It has the table of contents, an excerpt, and the index. Check them out and if it seems like stuff you would be interested in, by it from B&N. Honestly, most of the info in the book can be EASILY found on the Internet. ...
  19. I originally had the stock Garmin suction cup mount for my Etrex Venture and now Legend C. The suction cup piece eventually broke and glue wouldn't fix it. I later bought a RAM Mount setup with a locking suction cup. I didn't care for the Legend C holder and found that RAM Mount has a RAM-Garmin adapter product. It allowed me to use the clip-in piece from my Garmin mount with the great RAM suction cup. I am very pleased. http://www.gpszone.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi...key=RMRQHOLGA11 (I now use the RAM Mount Legend C holder as bodyarmor for my receiver when hiking.) ...
  20. GeoBobC is also right in that as long as your track data contains altitude numbers, Mapsource can give you an elevation profile. So can GPS TrackMaker and maybe a few other programs. Out of curiosity, if DEM data is in the receiver, would it record altitude based on that info or the altitude calculated from satellite 3d positioning?
  21. Just saw something at Office Depot this morning sort of similar for iPods. They were printable "tatoos" that you could print a design on and then apply. If you are into DIY, you might want to eyeball them and see what they are made out of. I enjoy making half-a**ed, goofy, homemade stuff and you might too! ...
  22. They had them for the same price at Tucson area Targets also. It seemed like a Christmas special. ...
  23. Thanks, everyone. I planned on going ahead and getting tha Auto-Nav kit from Best Buy. What sucks is that I can't find it at any of my local Best Buys here in Tampa, FL. The GPS and GPS accessories section at the local stores have always been on the weak-side. - Trailkat ...
  24. Anyone know how I can remove one of my double postings?
  25. http://www.pc-mobile.net/ck203.htm So, does anyone think that I would be able to connect my Legend C to one end of a USB cable and the other end to PC-Mobile's USB car adapter and NOT blow-up the GPSr? (See above link.) Here's my thought about it, but I have only a slight understanding of this kind of stuff: The Legend C receives power from my PC when connected. The USB port outputs 5V of power. The USB car adapter outputs 5-5.2V. So, since something in the GPSr steps the power down to 3V it should do the same with the adapter output, right? I wouldn't be worried except that the adapter's specs mentions 850mA. Since I am not exaclty sure what that means, I am a little nervous about trying it out. I would appreciate your opinions. Thanks! - Trailkat ...
