  1. We learned very quickly that the TBs get absconded rather quickly by fellow GCs. So, years ago we had a few nice ones - we kept the original and released a replica coin. Basically we copied the front and back in color, added a coin inside for weight and laminated it together. We then released the "replica" and guess what happened? They still went missing. The good part about sending out the replicas is, I can make an new copy and send it out again. I should do that to the few that we have and get them traveling again!
  2. Thanks, this was a big help to me. I got a new computer and the old GC Manager for Magellan would not recognize my EXPLORIST 500 (using windows 7). I downloaded the GSAK and it worked immediately!!! Now I don't have to manually load all the coords when we go out tomorrow!!!
  3. Just picked this one up - a few weeks ago (no blood & guts) we were caching on the North Shore, approaching the edge of a bit of a sheer drop off to the beach quite a distance below. We carefully approached the edge to have a look when it dawned on me that normally there's some kind of railing/barrier but none there that day! Should have heeded that instinct because about the same time, I stepped forward with my left foot and felt it go down, down, down! Turns out I had found the empty post hole which must have been 6' or more in depth. For once my mind came to life and I relaized that if I fell completely forward onto my face, I would indeed snap my leg and how in the world would we be able to get help considering where we were! I threw my arms out in front of me and kind of did a "V" shape which stopped my face first fall and stopped my leg from going in the hole further - at this point, it was already up to the knee! After a moment of getting over that UH OH feeling, I got my leg and foot out of the hole and we filled it so others wouldn't suffer a similar or worse fate. We also looked for the 2nd post hole that should have been there but it must have already been filled in! I now listen a little closer to that "gut" feeling when I have it and I certainly keep a closer eye on where my feet go! Whew.........
  4. I know what you are saying shdw wolf --- we dropped off 2 while in California. One has moved from Catalina to the mainland California, Nevada, Arizona and then up to Manitoba Canada. It is really cool to see it moving. On the other hand one is still in a cache on Catalina Island, but has not moved and I think it has gone missing b/c no one has logged it and people have said it is not present. Batting .500 - on these 2, go figure!
  5. We dropped a Geocoin off in California and it is still listed in the cache but people have logged that it is not present. What can I do? I noticed I can "Mark item as Missing" on the TB page but what does that do?
  6. I'm the half that was stopped by the Sheriff and let me say I am happy to know that they and the truck driver are on the watch! When I showed the GPS unit and the paperwork with a brief explanation - the officer was super nice and interested! Like they say in NY - If you see something, say something! Even though it was me and geocaching, I'm glad they did! (but I won't make that mistake again - hehehehe)
  7. Wow, everyone. Thanks for sharing your stories. We've been doing this for about 6 months now and "never had any trouble." Famous last words. My wife told her daughter that just before the nice police officer showed up! I think I have felt like we were being watched a few times while caching in neighborhoods but otherwise no other problems.
  8. This happened to my spouse yesterday. She is in Ohio visiting family and was geocaching at a rest area along the highway. She found the cache and proceeded to find another up the road. On the way back, across the road from the first Cache at the rest area, is a cache at the opposite side rest area. She arrived at this second rest area an hour after the first one. A self appointed "homeland security" truck driver having nothing better to do, saw them at the first one and then recognized the car an hour later and called the POLICE. The POLICE show up behind the car and my spouse needs to explain what she is doing. the Office said that a truck driver recognized the car and told the police that 2 people were burying things in the woods. He went into the woods to find the first one and when he saw the car across the highway, called the police. The officer called a buddy, after she showed him the papers and explained the sport, and his buddy new about it. She told him to tell the driver to place the cache he pulled out of the woods back where he found it so others will be able to find it in the future. The officer was nice and let them go and quickly made a U-turn to speak to the truck driver that was standing near his truck on the other side of the road. Hopefully all will be OK with the caches there. Anyone else have a story to tell? Cheers!
