  1. I happened to check on one of my caches today, and as I approached GZ, there was the container, right out in the open in a very high muggle area. It's a LPC, but a recent finder hadn't put it back underneath. The container is novelty-shaped, and would definitely catch the eye of passerby. But there it was! I'm sure it would have gone missing very soon if I hadn't gone there today. Really surprised it wasn't taken. Estimating by the last several log entries, it must have been exposed for at least 35 hours.
  2. Even a premium members only listing cache can still be stumbled upon. An unstealthy finder is all it takes for curiosity seekers to be drawn to that location.
  3. I had a similar problem. I kept replacing the cache, and finally whoever was taking it gave up. They must have felt guilty after the fifth steal.
  4. Are there geocaching postage stamps? Should be! A sheet of several designs could feature a generic GPS receiver, a satellite or two, hikers searching, a topo map, and a hidden cache sticking out from a tree stump.
  5. There are a lot of things to add to model train layouts...cemetaries, bus stop signs, benches, trash cans, even tiny pigeons. How about geocaches? And little geocachers holding a GPS, looking under rocks for a micro-micro-micro ammo can!
  6. I'd say it's just common courtesy for AWOLers to delist their cache(s) if they know they won't be tending to them anymore. I was recently all excited about a large cool-description cache located in my area, and went hunting for it. The last log entry (over a year old) by the final cacher to find it indicated the container had been crushed by vandals, but the contents were still ok. My search turned up nothing so I contacted the owner asking if it was still there. Did not hear back. Annoying! That reminds me, I need to log in a "not found" for this one, and add a note that its upkeep appears to be abandoned.
  7. Has anyone done this idea yet? A time capsule whereby finders add items that they think represent the present era, but they don't take anything. When full, the cache becomes dormant for a specified amount of time ("Don't open until the year 2020" for example), and the owner (or whomever the owner wants to bequest it to) retrieves it at that time.
  8. Ok, thanks! I feel rushed and just grab whatever is handy in my bag of stuff, and later in the day think of something that would have been better to add. The cache I was going to return to today has since been swiped by a muggle apparently.
  9. Is it ok (or common) to return to someone's cache and either add something else, or swapping one item I added earlier for another, without reporting it? I wish I had put a different item inside than I did at one of the caches (I've only found two so far, is it a newbie thing to second guess about what to add?) I wasn't specific in the logs about what I added the first time.
  10. I'm kicking myself for not having gotten into this years ago! Back around 2005 or so, a friend (David Lawrence, RIP) mentioned he had just discovered the fun, but I didn't think much at the time. I'd read several articles in mainstream sources and found the idea intriguing but still I didn't bite. It took an article that pointed out there were over 200 of caches within a radius of my own area for me to take notice. Now I'm trying to get my friends involved. They've all heard of geocaching and have been wanting to try it, but haven't yet gotten the needed motivation yet.
  11. A muggle no more, (nor a lurker no more), after reading an article in a local magazine last week! I'm hooked even though I have yet to find a cache; that should change by tomorrow though. I'm using my iPod Touch to find the nearest ones. I can't believe I didn't discover this enchanting pursuit years ago, for it's definitely my cup of tea.
