  1. After a hard days geocaching you may like to try one of these sites... Some UK campsites that allow open fires. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to chose your area, you don't have to register to access this. Happy Caching (and partying!!) Su
  2. Absolutely Brilliant!!!!! A well deserved honour! Have Fun..
  3. Any chance of sending the "I Pledge" geocoin down to NE Hants as I'd like to join in!! Thanks..
  4. I used to cache as a family and I'm now a solo cacher partly because of this very issue. Although I disapprove of their mercenary attitude to caching I can see things from a kid's point of view. Oddly enough what I considered tat interested my kids, (11 and 9 at the time.) Their favourite cache was GCVTB8 Cache Genie an absolute gem for kids, (of any age!) At the end of the day everyone plays this game the way they want to. I once left some toys in a newish cache hoping to please some mini cacher when a subsequent finder (adult,) logged, "Took car LN". At the time I was livid, now I just laugh at stuff like that. I get a little buzz out of leaving something nice for kids and usually mention toys in my logs to encourage mini cachers to visit. What happens after that is totally out of my control, so Que Sera, Sera. I've been in your position, I know how it feels and my advice to you would be: - Enjoy getting out in the fresh air and spending time with your kids, it's really not about the trades as much as the fun of the find and seeing places you didn't know existed. My two have now also taken up solo caching identities and do occasionally accompany me on a hunt. Personally I have found MO caches to be better stocked but that may just be the area I live in.
  5. I was waiting in Jubilee Gardens, taking photos of the display, when I saw the 2 white umbrellas a little earlier than the expected time. Claire and Gemma were very friendly and took some photos as my daughter received her coin. (Thanks girls, for standing there in the cold, so we can have fun with these coins.) Apparently 35 geocachers had turned up last Friday to pick up coins and I met Captain Gore-tex from Bristol just after we had got ours. Nice to meet you. I just spotted CSC chatting up the "Lovely Ladies" as we dashed off to get our train, (so that's how he gets all those coins!! ) I was wondering what would happen if there were any leftovers, did you get them then Bambography?? I picked up a dozen spares to hand out to local cachers in the NE Hants area. I think it is fantastic the way geocaching has taken on board the Diabetes message, and in such a fun way. Thanks Geocaching.com/Groundspeak...
  6. I will definitely be there tomorrow. I noticed they have extended the "opening time" to 2 hours - 17.00 to 19.00, (perhaps in response to last Friday's cachers??).. I would like to say a huge thanks to Lactodorum for posting this thread, as I don't think I would have heard of this event otherwise. Hope to meet some other cachers there, (and let's see how many coins they will give us!!)
  7. We can't make it tonight, but I'm still hoping to get up for the Wednesday events. If anyone is successful please post here to say what the setup is.. Thanks.
  8. Thanks for that info. My daughter is keen to go. Hopefully we might see some other 'cachers up there!
  9. We are going to try and get up to London for this event as my daughter is Diabetic and we don't live too far away. We were lucky enough to get a Unite for Diabetes TB "Kalachinsk, Russia" (TB1BKHN) which didn't get very far so if we could get a coin it would be fun to track its adventures. (If they let us have more than 1 coin I will grab a spare to give away!!??) My only query is that the London Eye seems to be lighting up 5 days earlier than the rest of the world, is this real or a typo? And will there be coins available on the 9th?? 2 years ago when our lives became directly affected by Diabetes I wondered how people in the 3rd World coped without the facilities we have. I like to think this international publicity is aimed at kids in developing countries even though the disease is increasing over here too. If, like me, you are involved with Diabetes as well as geocaching you might like to join in the festivities at other sites in the UK that will also be lighting up a monument:- Royal Research Ship Discovery, Dundee, Scotland, United Kingdom St. Catherine's Chapel, Abbotsbury, United Kingdom Town Hall, Leicester, United Kingdom City Hall, Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom Shell Centre, London, United Kingdom Gateshead Millenium Bridge, Gateshead, United Kingdom London Eye, London, United Kingdom Any which way, have fun and hopefully we will see some of these coins wandering from cache to cache soon.
  10. Edited previous post to clarify meaning....
Skadhi
  12. I had this problem with the Blackwater Valey Path, they negotiated with several councils on my behalf. I replied as you did, (with some advice from GAGB,) and I got the permission, so I am optimistic you will too. Unfortunately I got gazzumped by a cache setter who still hasn't asked for permission so I never got to put my cache out. C'est la vie. Chacun son gout!! Good Luck S.
  13. It would be great if the Geocaching community could make a difference in situations like this. There are some sensible ideas here. If anyone speaks Portugese perhaps they could post here - http://www.geocaching-pt.net/ The report I read said the parents were seated only 100 metres away from their room....
  14. Just send me the waypoint and I'll send you the co-ordinates.... Then it will be free!!!!!!!!
  15. Signature Items are like any other item you put into the box, once you shut the lid they take on a life of their own. I like to think the cache owner might get it, but they are for anyone really. (Not that I have produced many!) To me they are gifts not trades, mine are designed to jazz up geocaching gear. That may not appeal to many people, but if one person gets some pleasure out of it that's great! My personal favourites are the T & J Bears... (Although I think I shall now start a serious hunt for the Earplugs!! )
  16. Not so. A modern GPSR with WAAS enabled, is good to ±3m or better. With just a couple of minutes averaging this can easily be brought down to well below the 2.1m resolution of the GC.com DDMM.mmm format. The 3parameter datum shift used by systems such as Garmin and Magellan GPSrs induces an error of 7 metres or more. So that's why I ended up on the wrong side of a stream yesterday!! I too use OS maps and co-ordinates to plot my destination, just to avoid the odd lake, river, gorge, type of thing, even though some of my maps actually have Lat and Long in DD MM' down the side!
