  1. I agree. My kids (7 & 9) really enjoyed some virtual caches we found this summer in Charleston SC. There are some others, both earth and virtual caches, in our community. Anything to help keep my kids interested in history, science and social studies is a great benefit to caching.
  2. Thanks. I think I will hold those coin till I get near a Stargate cache. I'm heading to Florida in 3 weeks and see there is one there...not sure if I'll get a chance to visit. Otherwise I see there is one close to my parents house in Minnesota...that will be an option.
  3. I found a Swiss Geocoin TBY8YP that disappeared from 2007 until earlier this summer. Its mission to to visit all Stargate TB Geocaches in the US and Canada before heading back to its owner. What is a Stargate cache?
  4. A TB I just retrieved from a cache stats they are allowing online discoveries. I thought it was odd. I dropped the TB as soon as I could. I enjoy going to events and discovering other travel bugs and geocoins but I hand write down all the ones I personally discover. I think the whole list idea is not something I would enjoy.
  5. I found the TB, Meg, last week. It had been out of action for 11 months from being retrieved from one cache to being dropped in another. The owner's profile show they last logged on beginning of July but haven't logged a cache in several years. I'm planning a trip to Florida and taking Meg with me.
  6. This is all great advice. While I've known about geocaching for several years I didn't really get into it until this summer. That being said I ended up spending way too much money on GS buying cache containers and other things but for every $25 spent you got a free TB...so now I have 6 or 8 to send out into the world. I think I will try as many of these suggestions as possible. I love finding TB and have grabbed, discovered and moved (dropped) a bunch. I've been trying to not hold on to anyone more than 2 to 3 weeks but there is one that I have grown really attached to and will follow it on its journey so I'm hoping to find a cache that I think will give it a good chance of someone finding it and doing the right thing.
  7. Anytime you look at your phone/GPSr while at a restaurant your wife simply says 'No'!
  8. One of my friends that has been caching for quite a while suggested always signing the 2nd line and leaving the ftf info open to the second cacher to sign as if they were ftf in an attempt to rib him a bit...I thought that would be more fun. I try and log online as quickly as I can but in the field it is more of an issue of battery life left on my phone more so than data usage.
  9. Not your problem. In my area, everyone tries to log FTFs as soon as possible as a courtesy, but I really have no patience for someone that feels entitled to such information. Personally, when I go out for what I think might be an FTF, I always assume someone is finding the cache just after I've set off for it, so I'm always expecting it to be found by the time I get there. That would just make you a jerk. I'll support you if you have some reason not to log your FTF right away, but I won't support you if you intentionally try to screw someone else up just because you don't like what they're doing. But what I might do is stick in a little light hearted ribbing in hopes that the FTF hound will realize how rabid he's gotten. Blaming someone else for the time he wasted in a failed attempt for an FTF is pretty silly.
  10. I enjoy getting a FTF...5 of my now 93 finds are FTFs. In my area we have a ftf hound that jumped all over me a week ago because I didn't post a ftf online asap. Apparently he wouldn't have continued his trip to find the cache if he had realized he wasn't going to be the ftf. Funny thing is that particular day my two sons wanted to go caching (they're 7 & 9) and when they want to go caching it is better for us to go to an area that is cache rich to help keep their interest high...I didn't even realize we would be FTF until it was a blank log and then looking closer at the listing saw it went live earlier that same day. Now because of that reaction, I almost want to wait to do the online log because of how upset he was...
  11. In the past month I have seen a black bear, cougar, rattlesnake and skunk. None that were close enough to make me worry but the rattlesnake was quite large and I can't recall seeing one that large in the wild so it has made me a bit worried about some areas. One of my longtime friends saw a copperhead recently.
  12. I haven't been caching very long. I enjoy almost any cache...I enjoy a nano in a place that has plenty of items I check before I find the cache. I also enjoy ones that are big enough for swag. My kids love finding the bigger caches with swag...but they rarely trade for anything but enjoy dropping off a nice items from their collection of toys from the house.
  13. Interesting read. I have a half dozen or so travel bugs I have received for spending too much money with the Ground Speak store. Anyway...my boys (7 & 9 years-old) are really excited about putting travel bugs out and following their journey. What is the percentage of travel bugs that actual live a decent life? I'm really hoping they each get to enjoy watching their travel bug's journey. Our plan is to make a simple note of each travel bugs' wish list (goals) on one side of a piece of paper with the other side asking to only be taken by those who will move it along in it's journey and laminating the paper and then attaching it to the TB. Should this help?
