    Geocaching for Android 3.0 Release Notes

    I just installed the new version on my Motorola Droid Razr HD, android version 4.1.2. When I use the navigate to a Geocache option and select compass, the pointer vibrates up to 45 degrees in either direction, the motion is very quick, many cycles per second. The previous version did this for a while but after selecting the motion based rather the magnetic option the pointer worked normally. I have been unable to locate this option on the new version, Please advise. Thanks

     

    Having the same problem on my Droid Razr Max....only with the GC.com app..others (c:geo and cachesense) do not exhibit this problem

    Finally!! I have been able to compile and download my latest cartridge that I started several months ago. I still was not able to get anywhere with the cartridge I built then but after I copied/saved/compiled and downloaded it one stage at a time it seems to be behaving itself. I have no idea why the previous version will not download as I copied it word for word into a new version of the cartridge. I just have to test it out in the real world which I hope to do soon...then will activate it.

    I had one newbie cacher post in his log about finding one of my Unknown Soldier coins and that he was going to give it to his father as a keepsake..

    I politely wrote and told him that he could not do that or it would be stealing it since the coin belonged to me. I told him where he could purchase one if he really wanted to have one.

    Despite sending a number of messages, the coin never was placed in another cache...lesson learned.

    I know there are new cachers out there who don't know exactly what to do with coins or other trackables but once they are told...shame on them for not playing by the rules because they know there will not be any penalty for not doing so.

    I have "lost" more geocoins than I care to admit...I have had to tell cachers that they can't keep the coins they find unless they are unactivated or mystery coins and are meant to be kept by the finder. Even after telling some people they need to move them to another cache---they still do not do so. So what's the solution...not to put the real coin out there unless you don't care if it disappears.

    I have worked with the TB's at a number of Mega events and have seen some cachers trade specifically for geocoins and then they never get logged out of the events.POOF they're gone...no means for the owner to check who might have taken them. I refuse to put any more coins or tb's whether they are mine or someone else's into events to be traded and supposedly to be moved on. No matter what you do, there will be some number of people who make their own rules and don't think twice about keeping them. I think the "normal" loss of TBs at Mega events is about 15-20%...mostly coins. I now have a lot of my missing coins travelling again (thank you EXMAN) and it will be interesting to see if the proxies do any better at staying alive then the original coins did. Right now there are 5 of my proxy coins still logged into the GeoWoodstock event...here's hoping that they will eventually be put in another cache...Sorry for the rant but this is a very sore subject with me ..

    Still having a problem with my new Wherigp...I see that you made changes so since then....

    Working in the Wherigo Kit program...I can zip the file, upload the GWZ file and upload the GWC file to my computer(no password requested).

    If I try to use the Publish option...I get that same request for my password and the same error that my password is invalid.

    If I go to the Wherigo.com site, I can use the upload the GWZ option and it seems to compile and the cartridge shows up on the Wherigo.com site as having been created by me. I can select it and look at the front page of the cartridge with the basic info. But, if I try to download the cartridge back to my PC as if I was going to actually run it I get the following error message:

    It seems that the cartridge is compiling properly because if I load the GWC file that I can create while in the KIT program to my tablet and smartphone (both Androids)...the cartridge will run as it should...I just can't get it to publish to the Wherigo.com site and have it downloadable for someone else to use. I even tried downloading the finished cartridge using my husband's account name. I also tried downloading some other random cartridges and have no problem.

    I can make the cartridge available if you want to try it ad see if you get e same message....

    I know I am using the correct password...I've tried it a number of times using both Chrome and IE and always the same issue...sometimes the line numbers that are indicated change. I don't remember running into this error when I did my first cartridge. I saw a previous message with the same basic issue so started checking my script..

    All the zones have unique names...I shortened some although they were all less than 25 characters...I looked for any unusual characters anywhere...I even opened the LUA script using Notepad and could not see any obvious (to me anyway) places where script is crashing. The actions are multiple choice questions with something to do for both correct and incorrect answers..Wish I knew what more to look for.

    It's got to be something simple somewhere I am overlooking but after spending 2 days looking for it...I need some help, please .

    I am in the process of building my first Wherigo using Kit...First let me say I think it is great and nicely intuitive...I have been trying to edit the Zone names as an afterthought but it doesn't seem to want to let me do this. When I open the zone and click on the current name....I can delete the default and type in the new one but I can't figure out how to get it to save it. Maybe I don't understand what "click off to save" means...I have tried a number of different ways but no success. It's not a big deal but thought it would be nice to name the zones instead of just "New Zone". What am I doing wrong????

    To install, copy and paste the script above into Notepad or another text editor and save it as a file called ColouredIcons.user.js (the ".user.js" bit is important), then -

    • In Chrome, navigate to chrome://chrome/extensions then drag'n'drop the script file onto the page to install it.
    • In Opera, move the file to your User Javascript folder (you can set which folder this is at Settings > Preferences > Advanced > Content > JavaScript options).
    • In Firefox, with Greasemonkey installed, open the script file from the File menu to install it.

    Me, I'm not much good at graphics, but there are a whole load more dull grey icons on the site. If anyone else feels like coming up with their own versions of them, you can just create them in your favourite graphics program, then use the Data URI Kitchen to convert them to the URL format used in the script above or Avernar's stylesheet. Use the "upload a file" option and tick the box for base64 encoding.

    Has anyone put together a list of which image name represents which icon? I have no idea what any of that script means, but it is good enough of an example that I can modify it to replace the grey icons. Like I said earlier, I can learn what the other new icons mean, (had to learn what the original one meant when I first joined), but all of the grey ones look the same to me, (and I guess many others). I can't learn what I can't see.

     

    I really appreciate everyone's help as Groundspeak seems to be rather mute on the subject. I keep coming home from work and hoping to see that at least the grey ones have been reworked to give them some contrast, and I keep getting disappointed. The fact that non forum members are coming here for the very first time to complain should be a giant red flag and I think it would get someone's attention. I'm beginning to wonder if it's hamsters running the place, or ostriches.

    If you look at the list of trackables for this cacher...for instance he has 60 "Discoveries" of the Space Gate coin....most were discovered 12/06 to 12/08... a few before. These coins are all over the world. Can't imagine they got the ok to discover from so many..I know some people allow virtual logging of their coins but this is definitely out of the ordinary.

    I just deleted a number of Bogus finds on my coins by the cacher named in another forum topic started recently by CA Royal Flush. The coin IDs all began with PC0. He/she currently shows over 10,000 trackables moved or discovered.

    It appears this cacher is in the US and most of their 1304 finds are in the mid-Atlantic states.

    I recently discovered I could run Wherigo cartridges with my Android phone using the Whereyougo ap. I also have run a cartridge that I downloaded onto my Nexus 7 tablet(Android 4.2.1--Wifi only). It ran nicely on the tablet without internet connection except the maps didn't show unless I had it tethered to my smartphone or was able to get into a Wifi zone. For the WIG I was running, this wasn't a big issue. In order to download the cartridge to the tablet...I still had to put it on my PC first...although I was told that newer Android devices would allow a direct transfer. I want to set up a simple WIG for my area (Charleston, SC) so may be coming back here for assistance :rolleyes::laughing::rolleyes:

    Geocoin Grab Bags

    Wanting to sell off some of my excess coins so have put together some grab bags (12).

    All coins are unactivated, trackable @ geocaching.com and in excellent condition. Activation codes suppplied with the coins.

    Each grab bag will contain 6 full sized coins or 5 full sized and 2 smaller.

    Each will also contain either a pin or trackable tag or extra coin.

    So sorry to hear about this...I have a set of his hand wrought coins that are among my favorite geocoin treasures. I too had never met him but know our geocaching/geocoin world will miss him. Thanks for the information.

    All of the previous suggestions for helping you to get going and finding caches are great. One thing not mentioned so far is if there is a possibility of finding a local experienced cacher to go with you a time or two until you get the feel of how and where to look...until you build up confidence. Most cachers are more than happy to help out a newbie. Good luck and keep trying.
