Letter to Garmin dealers in SA: 14th June 2002 We receive many queries regarding map coverage and time scales for South Africa. Hopefully this brief summary will shed some light on the matter. We are offering 2 levels of Garmin mapping product and the one you purchase will depend on the GPS model that you have. Here is a list of the different Mapsource products with expected delivery dates as well as the units that they are associated with: 1) Mapsource City Select (Due July 2002) Unit - Streetpilot 111, GPS V Features Street level data, Street address lookup, Automatic Turn by Turn Routes, POI (Points of interest), Automatic Route Calculation. Unlock code means that one data set can only be used for that serial number unit that it has been unlocked for. Future Streetpilots and GPS V's will all be supplied standard with a CD, PC Cable and in the case of the streetpilot, a programmed data card. The Emap, Streetpilot, Vista, Legend, GPSMAP76, GPSMAP176 can all accept the City Select data set should the customer require street lookup which is not available on the Roads and Rec product but this comes at a much higher price. When used in these products the features include Street level data, Street address lookup, POI (Points of interest), Unlock code is required City Select map coverage includes metros of Gauteng, Durban, Cape Town as well as accurate base maps of N1 interconnecting highway and Garden Route. 2) Mapsource Roads and Recreation ( Will be produced locally using MapIT data set - Available To Br Announced) Unit - All mapping products including older GPS 111 plus, GPS12map Features Street level data with more comprehensive city and basemap coverage than offered with city select. Regular updates will also be available. Peter Scholtz www.biometrics.co.za

  3. quote:I will try and remember from now on that the site actually wants the conversion to Decimal, and not act like a twit and just force the stuff in, assuming the Americans do this to make us confused! Note there are three formats: 1. Degree Minute Second 2. Degree Minute Decimal (Geocaching.com) 3. Degree Decimal Apparently the reason Geocaching.com uses Degree Minute Decimal (2) is because most GPS's default to it! Peter Scholtz www.biometrics.co.za
  4. quote:Your 2 caches ... Impressed to see your Landy made it to the top! (dig!) The Melkbos 4x4 cache is Cliffords. The new one is mine. Planning on hiding many more 4x4 caches ... Btw, what does BH mean? Actually I've got a 96 Land Cruiser (in a class of it's own!) parked behind the building in the panorama. Can you recommend 4x4 routes in the Cape Town region. Free ones to start with ... Peter Scholtz www.biometrics.co.za
  5. I hid the Tableview 4x4 this weekend. There's also MELKBOS 4X4 I like hiking and 4x4-ing so I'm looking forward to more 4x4 caches. There's plenty of hiking caches and counting ... Peter Scholtz www.biometrics.co.za
  6. Check http://www.geocaching.com/map/southafrica_wc.asp and zoom in to the coast line. I got the shapefiles from the demarcation board and sent them to Jememy for inclusion with the site. If anyone has better shapefiles then let me know. Would like to have rivers etc indicated. Peter Scholtz www.biometrics.co.za
  7. Please list GPS and Mapping web sites that you find useful for South Africa. Here are some I know: GPS Waypoints SA Geocaching Maps Leisure Map Nasa Satellite Server <-- very cool! Peter Scholtz www.biometrics.co.za [This message was edited by Peter Scholtz on March 28, 2002 at 06:44 AM.]
  8. Because of my efforts last year promoting Geocaching in South Africa I made contact with the Cape Town distributors. I gave them a hundred of the booklets which they said they will distribute to their dealers. While there I registered as a dealer on behalf of Geocaching South Africa. So, I (Geocaching SA) am a Garmin dealer and thus can get stock at cost. But I don't want to start any kind of GPS or Geocaching business mainly because I don't want to do any admin (e.g. books & tax) - my life is busy enough as it is. But, but, I do want to encourage Geocaching so I am quite willing to help fellow Geocachers in getting a good deal. So, for Geocachers, contact me when you are in the market and I'll let you know what the dealer cost is. I'll add a 10% handling fee to cover the cost of taking time off work to collect and deliver, petrol and car wear & tear (they're located at the airport) and possible warranty return hassles. Please, this is for Geocachers only, don't even mention this to non-cachers. I don't have the time ... Peter Scholtz www.biometrics.co.za

When I upgrade to a GPS with mapping can I scan maps and upload it to the GPS? Garmin (my preference) accepts Garmin's Mapsource maps. Are their GPS's locked to their own maps or can I create my own? I don't mind problems like zooming not having scaling text. As long as I can scan a detailed map larger than the screen that will pan as I move. Peter Scholtz www.biometrics.co.za
