it won't die. there are almost 900,000 geocaches around the world, almost 500,000 members, so i just don't see that happening. are you po'd at the hiders? the only help i've ever received or even asked for, was on this site and i have a blast with it, so does my daughter, nephew and i recently was in japan and my in-laws had a great time doing it as well. my wife doesn't really like it, so she doesn't go. no big whoop. maybe you're looking for stuff that is too hard for someone just starting out, maybe the people around your area have been busy or something. maybe there will be an event soon in your area. have you checked? have you been to your region specific forum? then again...maybe this just isn't the hobby for you.

Stolen GPS Oregon 550T in Hawaii
namiboy replied to CacheGuardian's topic in General geocaching topics
when i was stationed in japan i lost my wallet off base but got it back intact, cash and all. so did 3 other people i knew over my 4 years there. 1 guy i know lost his wallet on base, never got it back. just goes to show that while America is the greatest country, with the best armed forces, some of the members aren't of the highest order, just like in any job or organization. i hope you get your gpsr back. -
i've never geocached with anyone that was doing it before me, meaning i never asked for help in the field, never went to an event etc. from what i've seen though, if you do ask for help you usually get it. that said, i don't think this sport will die, and if it does, big whoop. there's plenty of other things to do.

not trying to discourage you AT ALL from becoming a premium member, but you can download geocaches directly from the mygarmin website as well, although i've never tried downloading to my nuvi from there.

there have been a few times where i left my pen in the truck, or forgot one altogether, and i thought "i hope there's a pen in there, but if not i'll be signing in blood".

different voice downloads for auto-routing
namiboy replied to namiboy's topic in GPS technology and devices
i guess i'm just not as cool as you. -
not geocaching-specific, but no other place has better info than here. anyhoo, i went on garmin's website to see what other voices i could download to my nuvi 200 and 1200, and only found 3: team garmin, an elf and a scary voice. is that all there is, or am i missing something? thanks as always for any help.

So you went to Hell Valley too..... ;-) Hope you had fun with the Japanese caches. We did 28 in as many days without going out of our way to much, but then, we were there to see the country, not to go caching. i'd been to hell valley a long time ago before we had our daughter, so we decided to take her. i actually had 28 geocaches loaded but only got 5 because we were so busy. 5 out of 6 ain't bad though.

namiboy replied to ssoutherngurll's topic in General geocaching topics
i usually leave a crisp hunnert dollar bill. that's just me and i don't expect anyone else to do it. maybe a twenty.?.?.? -
i rarely even look at the stuff in the geocaches i find, as the saying goes..."it's all about the hunt for me".
-

i wish you both nothing but the best.

the nuvi 500 and 550 from garmin may suit you. they look like the car ones, but are also 'waterproof' and such, they say on the garmin site they are good for all uses: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=27442

Legend HCx:How to open the battery cover?
namiboy replied to reddishGrey's topic in GPS technology and devices
It is the first time... but anyway, thanks. I got it. Did you get it? just turn the metal thing on the back, you arent the first one to be baffled by this one. My self proclaimed "Gamer" slash avid hunter outdoors man, hay farmer couldn't figure it out either. ouch-a-palooza. -
Garmin vs. Delorme--looking to buy a new GPS
namiboy replied to mtnbikers's topic in GPS technology and devices
Cute story, ...... I can just visualize the next Jeff Foxworthy series: "Geocaching with a PN-40 - So Easy a 6 Year Old Can Do It" only if howard stern does it first. and i don't see that happening. -
