  1. I always try to leave a item that is useful to people that like doing outdoor sports i.e. hiking, camping. My typical item is a small compass of some sort. I figure that it's something that may actually prove to be useful to someone and something that I may like to find in a cache. Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  2. I love to trade and it's always fun to look at all of the stuff in a cache. Of course, there are always some items that make me and if there isn't anything really nice I try to leave a fun and useful item. Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  3. I would most likely replace the logbook and take the wet one home and attempt to safely dry it. I would also attempt to contact the owner and offer to mail it to them at my expense. Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  4. Out of curiousity, how many people are here from the B'ham area? Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  5. Here's a friend of mine that is also a deputy: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest_cache.asp?u=thehump Cheers! Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  6. I always look out for the local caches Here is one of my hidden caches: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=48546 read the third log entry This is in a different city and county where I work, but apparently the officer was cool with everything once Geocaching was explained to him Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  7. I would think "that's a pretty cool cache" and would even talk to you about it.... but it would have to be while you were in the back of my car while I took you to jail on a vandalism warrant, unless you had the property owner's permission. I tend to agree that a responsible property owner wouldn't give permission due to the fact that property in disrepair can be dangerous. I do think it's a pretty creative idea though... Cheers! 8. Thanks for the great answers guys! Not only is benchmark hunting fun, it's quite educational also! Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  9. I logged this benchmark: http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.asp?PID=DH1586 and took a picture of what I was trying to describe. Is this the correct method for logging something like this? Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  10. Thanks for the info! I will be setting a Bug loose this weekend Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  11. When I'm logged in and search by my local area it lists the caches I have found, as well as, the caches I have hidden. Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  12. So should I take the gps out of my wifes car? Nah, just have it transmit with an error that way you can perform the error correction and know where she truly is and everyone else will think she's miles away from her true location Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  13. call sign cards that HAM operators used to mail to contacts We still trade QSL cards 73 de W4JEF! Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  14. I logged my first virtual cache this weekend. It was a very educational location that I never knew existed, so my vote is that as long as the virtual cache is educational/historic that it is very acceptable. Cheers! Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  15. I own a Palm and to be honest.... am scared of taking it out in the woods, but I am paranoid by nature. I think it's just a matter of personal preference. Happy caching! Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  16. For those of us that have jobs that keep us outdoors it's a great opportunity to place caches where we work I'm a deputy sheriff and have already placed a cache that is located within my beat: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=48645 and I'm sitting here looking at two ammo cans that I have filled-up with tons of fun stuff like compasses, fishing equipment and other really nice outdoor items. I will be hiding these soon. Just think of the number of people that don't work in an office enviroment and have the opportunity to be outside and hide some really fun caches. A salesperson that travels would have a great opportunity to place caches in multiple locations along his travel route. Cheers and happy caching! Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  17. This weekend I got two different TBs from two different caches. These caches were not really located near major highways. In order to help the TBs catch a ride that is more likely to help them move more quickly I would like to put the TBs in one of my caches that is located extremely close to a major interstate. Can I place these TBs in my cache and what would be the proper method for logging my cache? Would I just do a 'log your visit' on my cache page and note that the bugs were found by me and placed in my own cache in order to help them travel? Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  18. I upgraded with no problems.... all went as expected and now I know my average speed Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  19. Thank you to everyone that has replied! As usual, every day is a learning experience and today was no exception Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  20. I agree that printer-friendly pages would be a great help! Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  21. This is just something I have wondered about and hopefully can get a definitive answer. As a child, on trips with my family, we would go down the interstate and the signs would tell you the milage to the next town. I always wondered if that was to the city limits or to the center of town, so naturally I am curious about the zip code search here on geocaching.com in relation to zip codes. Cheers! Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com
  22. When I enter a Zip Code to find benchmarks for an area on geocaching.com I am presented with a nifty list of benchmarks to find. My question is, where is the Zip Code located i.e. is it the post office for that particular Zip Code?
