  1. It strikes me as odd, that someone found some petroglyphs and from there it worked to some authorities somewhere. The decided this place was a treasure, which it is, and decided that people should see them. So they made a park of the area and to promote the people seeing these petroglyphs advertise the park to the public and openly invite them to come see the petroglyphs. But these people who do go to see them are not permitted to say to someone "Hey want to see something cool? Go the the park at these coordinants, pay the fee to get in, and view these petroglyphs." If this historical treasure is so prized that advertising peer to peer or via a "interesting places" database outside of the sites own, they should be ferreted away out of the public eye and out of the elements as well seeing as mother nature has a nasty way of removing things that are man made. maybe they should be lifted from the rocs they are on, encased in a laquer and hidden in a cave to prevent UV damage. 2. I almost bought a bumper sticker in a novelty shop once that read "Mean people suck, nice people swallow!" Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  3. quote:Originally posted by brdad:"Originally posted by Cheesehead Dave: Is there such a thing as a do-it-yourself pencil embossing kit?" Those are cool! First thought is you could just print some up on small index labels and stick it on.... you could buy a set of small steel letter stamps and use those, possibly even have a rubber stamp made and ink it on? _There are a lot of judgemental people in the world, and I think all those people are worthless dirtballs._ Now thats a good idea they used to make steel letter stamps but they were replaced with rubber stamps but there are a lot of the steel sets still out there it wouldn't be ahrd to make a die that would hld the chase of letters and the pencil and emboss them with a bit of paint on the letters. now i have to go find one of the steel stamp sets this could be an adventure on its own. By the way, our sig item is a small hand made felt eeyore tail, they aren't worth anythign and cost pennies to make but to local cachers there is no mistaking Eeyore and Shadow have been to the cache. Not that I would ever expect anyone to take them they will probably lay in the bottoms of caches for years to come. Ha! Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  4. the best thign i have found in a cache was an inline shut off valve for a garden house that still had its 85¢ price tag on it. Not that it was special or valuable but i really needed one and was elated to find it in a cache. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  5. I think this is an on the fence issue. If the bills are placed in a cache and someone else picks them up and spends them as they would any other dollar(as Sacagawea dollars are quite common) I think its fine that is how normal money moves. But if the same bill is continually passed from cache to cache then its a geocaching travelbug and no longer a viable where's george dollar because it is removed from normal circulation. 6. You can always park 10 miles away. I find that makes the hunt much longer and harder. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.

  10. Congratulations Leprechauns. At this rate you'll have 500 before the next event cache! Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  11. Talk to your kids, answer thier questions and ask them questions about anything you may see of intrest. It is far too easy to get in the walking/hiking mindset and go quiet. Talking while you are hiking will keep the kids intrest and they won't tire as quickly. Plus they and you may learn something. Lots of things can be overlooked by most but if brought up by one person everyone involved will notice and may be currious. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  12. Andrew, i would try the UK forum and see if you can find a cacher in your area that may be able to help you learn how to use your GPSr and maybe see if you can go out for a cache with them and see how accurate his reciever is. If you hunt a cache that was placed by someone that took the time to average thier coords when they hid a cache you will find your accurace is usually far better than the estimated error the reciever is giving you. I have been standign on the given coords of a cache with a 6m estimated error and the cache was less than 2m away. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  13. As with most pcs i have one serial port in the back and its hard to get to. So I bought a serial extension to bring it around to the front and jsut exchange the cables as i need them into the extension. but i also use 3 didfferent serial devices. i may use an A-B switch if i only had two. 14. This sounds interesting Puppyman. Have you got any idea when you are going to start planning things that you can put on paper or on the forums so that we can follow whats going on. I would like to be able to see what progress you have made. If i knew what was going on when i may be able to help with a few things. Moraine is only a half hour away from us. 15. I have seen logs of people finding caches with nearly every model of mobile gpsr. I would think that they all work adequately. I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  16. Go to garmins firmare update page it will tell you what changes have been made in each update. I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  17. I'm wondering what makes a person qualified enough to teach geocaching. And is "the force" an element of caching education? I'm one sat short of triangulation.

  20. quote:Originally posted by millerx4: We are now all hooked on Geocaching but have some rules. 1. Never separate out of earshot. Good idea. quote:2. Always take radios, take a phone if it will work. Good idea #2, but take the phone even if it may not work, And always take extra batteries for anything that uses them. quote:3. If we can't find it, let Mom operate the GPS. Yet another good idea. But you'll probably get soo hooked you'll want to upgrade eventually and unit 1 becomes moms anyway. quote:4. When nobody else can find it and the 4 year old says it "ober dare" believe him! True be this. Little ones the force be strong for. (Dont' worry everyone develops the force eventually, no matter how bad they have the dad gene.) quote:5. When the sheet shows 4 stars for difficulty and terrain believe them! Trust the rating system, if anything expect the rating to be low. ratings are set by the hider who generally knows the ideal way to find the cache. The hunter doesn't always use the same approach. (As you have so entertainingly accounted for.) And don't be afraid to log a not found or an embarassing incident while caching. they are generally more fun to read than a plain "found it" log. There is no reason to be ashamed of an incident that happened caching. Somethign similar has happened to most of us at one time or another. Keep caching and have fun its one of the best sports I've ever taken part in. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  21. Congratulations Mopar! I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  22. Shadow is getting a set of trekking poles and some new flashlights. My birthday was a month ago, that was where we splurged on the caching gear. I got a SporTrak map with mapsend topo, a .30 cal ammo can, several decon cans, hand warmers and various other small caching related items. Eeyore It took a GPS to get me away from technology.
  23. I updated my SporTrak map to the 4.02 last night. I took it outside to let it orientate itself after the upgrade. After it got a good lock I brought it inside. It wasn't untill then i realized that the position it came up with was over 1000 feet away from where I was. I am shortly going to go back out to let it try to find itself again. I have noticed the redraw on the plotter screen is much faster. but If i have lost serious accuracy in a swap for quicker refresh of the map I am goign to be seriously displeased. Eeyore It took a GPS to get me away from technology.
