  1. I was at Phipps Conservatory yesterday for my wife's birthday. I really wanted to log Uneven Pavement, but we coudln't find anyone to capture the picture. It is clear that Geopoet wasn't in the right place at least not vertically. "Step 1: Do all the standard geocaching stuff of setting waypoints and wandering around until you find what you think is the proper location. If you don't find pavement that is uneven, then you haven't found it. When you find it, there will be no doubt that you are in the right place. Don't go at night as there isn't enough light after dark to capture a good image." As much as Tangent and Geopoet have done for pittsburgh caching, they missed this one. I would email them and ask them to either return and get a new picture, and/or change thier log to a note untill they can, or delete the log. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  2. Of the avaliable garmin and magellan GPS recievers avaliable the only one I would recommend you not get is the magellan 310 its a handly unit for hunting or such but its 2 decimal place accuracy make geocaching a bit tougher your coords are up to 5 times less accurate with it. I am sure the 310 will have to be discontinued soon its not much cheaper than the 315 which is 3 decimal accurate and has more nav screens. The only further sugestion i have is if you plan to do urban caching a mapping unit with software makes city caching a lot easier. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  3. The snake looked a little small in those pics. Maybe you should get a close up next time 360, or maybe just a zoom lens. lol I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  4. You can find good plastic polishes in most magic shops if they sell juggling equipment. A lot of people use them for acrylic contact juggling balls and gazing balls. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  5. #1 and #3 are the best values in my opinion. It basically boils down to the size. If you can carry the larger unit I would go with the meridian. But if you need somethign smaller with the best clip or ability to fit in something sesigned for an item cell phone sized get the sportrak Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  6. I would write a letter to the editor identifying yourself as the owner of the cache and an avid geocacher. Explain as you did here the rules of caching and point out some of the discrepancies in the article. If they publish it that would be great, if not at least you know you tried. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  7. You peopel obviously never sleep or you don't have to be at work at 6am. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  8. I voten no simply because excessive information always leads to trouble. People will be griping because cacherX is watchign all of thier caches or they will suspect anyone who is watching thier cache and hasn't found of plundering it if anything should happen to thier cache. And I'm sure there will be other things that haven't occured to me as yet. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  9. For a few years I worked security as a licensed pirvate investigator. I supervised the security officers at a power plant. There were times when we ahd to confiscate items from the contracted construction workers, these items were all listed in a waiver that each employee of the construction companies had to sign and agree to thier first day of working. As long as the items were not illegal they would be returned at the end of the day. But I did find myself hauling some officers butts out of the frying pan a few times when they tried to confiscate items or force the workers to leave the items outside when they were not items specifically listed. Many run of the mill security offices don't know the laws that they should. And often the construction workers did know the laws and just how to threaten the officers with them. The also tried to bait the officers as well. But its human nature to defy rules. In this case i would say it is most likely an overzealous rent-a-cop that doesn't know the laws he should and doesn't know how to enforce company policy. If GSP reciever are banned from the park which they may well be, the security officer should have stated it and been prepared to show a violator the policy and inform them as to where they should have seen it before entering the park. The keep taking my 4" crescent wrench every time I try to get into Kennywood. Its just a tool to me I put it in my pocket every day along with my pocket knife. I feel lost without it. But there is good reasoning for not permitting it in the park. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  10. After seeing the leprechauns' get up at the recent CITO event I have decided I liked thier setup I went out and got a fishign vest with large pockets which carry nearly everything I need. I got a high sierra drench hydration pack to carry things that I don't often use but need to take along. With the vest and hydration pack I don't have to stop for anything and don't have to take the pack off to log a cache. I can do everythign workign out of the vest. The drench pack isn't highly insulated but it kept the water cold for 6 hours. only what remained in the tube would warm up. It would get cold quickly after sucking what little was in the tube out. The vest and pack cost me $60 at Dunhams. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  11. Most of the time if I do find coords that are off my first asumption is it is my GPSr that is a little off due to it being being a quick glance aththe reciever and I assume the hider took good coords and averaged them. A few i have foud a godo bit off of what i thinnk is the coords given. I hunted a cache yesterday hidden by a local cacher that i know uses good coords. the last time i looked at my GPSr it said i was 16 feet north of the cache. I got out my compass and walked what i assuemd to be 16 feet south. After a few seconds of looking I found the cache roughly 4 feet from the spot I stopped after the last movement. I couldn't ask for better coords. nearly all of his coords have gotten me that close to a cache before I even started "searching" for the cache. If i find coords that seem to be off I still assume that its poor signal or reflection or the fact that I haven't taken more than one reading in the area. I almost never think its the doords posted by the hider that are off. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  12. simple, "hint: look at he dificulty level" Maybe these people shoud'nt be searching for such dificult caches. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  13. quote:Originally posted by Mxyzptlk: BUT I would imagine if more and more parks adopt this sort of policy you would have only a handful of people hiding caches. I know I wouldn't go through the process because I honestly do not want to tie up my weekend pushing paperwork around. I would much rather hunt a cache that I know has been approved by land managers. And hunting quality caches are by far more fun that a high quantigy of poor caches and I believe that a little paperwork and a few trips to the hiding area will lead to higher quality caches. There are a few thigs in the approval process I think are a little more than necessary but we have to play by land managers rules. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  14. you can check magellans upgrades at this page or this page but it may not be much help then again it may depending on how much it can upgrade and how many sats it can recieve at once. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  15. If you would like to learn about how anteannae work go to the ham forum i'm sure people there will be happy to explain. But in short the best antenna you can use for anything is one that is designed in the wave forum that is is designed for in a full scale but harmonically smaller antennae work well to and antennae that aren't the right form will work also but not as well. I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  16. I can't think of a better reason to finish the Tour de Parks something shiny is always nice. We are nearly half done. Doe to weather, health and failing cachemobiles we have been sidelined since midnovember. I am aching to get back out caching now how do i get Shadow moving? hmmm Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  17. On Topic. The only critter we have run across was a black bear on our first day caching, was walked right up on him in the dark. When we were about 10 yards away he noticed us and ran away. We didn't see him untill he started to run. OT- I have never seen a ringneck snake in the wild, but I have caught two fo them in the die shop I work at two years ago when we had a problem with crickets in the shop. I took the snakes out back of the shop and released them in the woods. i didn't think a concrete floor was a good place for a cold blooded critter to be crawling. I did notice that ringneck snakes do leave a terrible scent on yoru hands that takeas few washigns to get rid of. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  18. I have always liked Markwell's calvin and hobbs avatar. Calvin and Hobbes have always represented to me what can happen with innocence and imagination. And I really liked MountainMudbug's old avatar. It was simple but it told the story of who she is. Eeyore. I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  19. 1 From the coords nav screen press right or left on the control pad to view the alternate coords system. 2 To get the timer to quit spinning and get epe back move a few steps from where you are and it will quit averaging. 3 I don't remember and I can't find my users manual. (not that I looked very hard) Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  20. quote:Well, IV_Warrior seems like a credit to the sport, but I'm just a frustrated little green man with pointy ears who posts all day to the forums because I can't be out finding geocaches all the time like I want to. The is telling the truth too, pointy eared little freak. And happy Saint Pat's Lep don't drink too many of those green beers, they come out green too. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  21. I quit smoking over 3 years ago. I can't stand the smell of smoke any more. But i still have cravings every day. I don't know if they will ever go away. But i can get out of bed in the mornings and not cough untill i get sick any more. that alone makes me thankful for having quit. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  22. Even if it is a pay box you still have the right to take a paper, and reading is good for the mind. I doubt there are any paper boxes that the cost of the paper is more than the value of the content, an di live in a town with a 6 page news paper. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.

  24. This in my opinion is great. Keep in mind tht i'm lazy and haven't read all of the postings in this thread so iamy be repeating things previously said. But... In my opinion any park that is willing to participate in caching is a bonus, even if they have restricted other cache placements. Thier caches will be the benchmark on which they will judge locak geocaching. They will be able to bring more people into the parks more visitors means more money for the park in several ways. Plus they will be monitoring the caches and be able to see how much pleasure that these caches bring to the people lookign for them and they can see the amount of environmental impact geocaching has. If they find it acceptable they may permit cachers to hide caches in thier park or they may place more themselves. Or they may place the caches with the help of an experienced local cacher that will be able to add some variety to the ones the presently have. And with any luck they will report to thier superiors how beneficial caches are to the park and will win favor for more caches there and in other parks. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
