  1. I'm sorry I can't help and I am sorry that your son's etrex was broken in his effort to uphold my way of life, for which I thank him. I am sure that someone will be albe to help you arrange the best way to see to it that he gets a new unit fast and hopefully not at too much expense. But to the reason I decided to respond to this thread. When I saw Desert_Warrior asking for help I was afraid I was going to open the thread and read he was organizing a CITO in his back yard to shovel dane doot! Our best wishes and thanks to DW's son. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  2. The only unit still avlaiable on the market that I know of that is not capable of all of those functions is the Magellan GPS 310. But I am sure they won't be avlaiable much longer they aren't much less than the 315 which is capable. I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  3. Some time ago I saw a thread where someone was not only sending unstructions along with their bug as to how to use them but a passport as well that explained the bug's mission and an area to list caches it has already visited and cachers who have handled it. 4. You may have to reinitialize the GPS as well travelign long distances with it turned off will make it dificult for it to locate satelites without initalizing it for the region. I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  5. A .004 minute difference is about 25 feet, I'm sure you'll find that your "accuracy" of a Garmin or "estimated position Error" in a Magellan would probably have covered that range. It is quite normal for geocaching, I wouldn't be concenred untillit said that you were .010 minutes off then there may be some factor or failure causing that much inaccuracy. Also there may have been an error in the opposite direction when the cache coords were taken when the cache was hidden, that was a fairly accurate cache I wouln'dt be concerned at all about being that far off. If the GPSr were to beep and flash and say "hey stop its here" when you were right on top of a cache hunting them wouldn't be terribly fun. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  6. Once you are off road even with topo maps loaded the maps are of little help with elevation or surface markings in exception of water knowing where you are in relation to a body of water is handy for navigation. But if you use paper topo maps you will get much more useful information from them. Not that i'm knocking my mapping unit, its gets me a lot of places faster and easier than my nonmapping unit when street navigating. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  7. The coolest thing i've found in a cache was a log book. If it is possible to read the log book in the area of the cache I will sit down and read through all the entries. I really enjoy seeing what others had to say while at the cache site. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  8. I am still willign to bet he stopps at the store after the first cache to get more gear on the way to the second. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  9. I have all of Pittsburgh and roughly a 25mi radius around the city in my SporTrak Map. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  10. Trading fairly or trading up is ideal but it doesn't always happen. There will always be people leaving thier gum wrapper and an dime in exchange for a pen light or a fresh set of batteries. Complainign about poor trading isn't going to change people's trading practices. I often take thigns from cahces that are broken or dirty and i'll take something that i think i may enjoy playing with untill i find the next cache to leave it for the next 30 year old kid. And no matter what i find in a cache i always tend to leave a few things that i think will better the cache or i think a child finding it will enjoy. tube of glitter i get 3/$1 and a pocket watch that i pay 1-3 dollars for is almost a staple for our trades in additino to our sig Eeyore tails and if a cahe looks like it may need something for the biggr kids i carry a small variety of pretty or useful things. What I leave in a cache may not have a high total monetary value but I like to think that what I leave will be taken and enjoyed by someone. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  11. I always enjoy reading stories of cacher's first times out. I remember the things Shadow and I went through on our first day caching, everythign from realizing what thigns we needed and stopping at stores between the caches to buy more gear, to running into a black bear face to face on a dark trail in an area we had never been before. I try to read the first day accounts of everyone I see posted. It brings back many happy memories, and a few chuckles seeing people making the same mistakes we all did our first times out. 12. For a Scooby, Shaggy, and Daphne cache, I would think a Scooby Doo toy of some sort signed by the cache owners would be a good first finder's prize that I would keep, even display by my pc. It would be relatively cheap and very easy. Personalized Items are always easy for people to keep it makes caching more personal. Not everyone can say they have the signed first finder's prize from any given user or team. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  13. That is great, I can't wait to see the log and pics of it when you get her out there. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  14. The simplest way to determine what you should put in a cache is to ask yourself if you would take the same item from a cache. I also think the free soday bottle caps are a good item. they are free and worth something. And a cold soda on the drive home is much better than finishing your luke warm water. 15. Congrats tonsil I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  16. The voltage regulator is in the power cable for a magellan you would have to add one if you wanted to make a cable to run off a power supply. The 12v powersupply will overdirve the reciever without it. I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  17. I used to laugh my a..butt off when Dick Trickle, Sterling Marlin, and Alan Kulwicki were all racing. The whole commentary would sound like a meeting of the disfunctional and diseased. Alan Kulwicki was my favorite driver when he died I couldn't get into nascar any more. But I'll never forget the polish victory laps. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  18. I have to agree with Shibby he obviously didn't find the cache he is logging. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  19. "I wish George would quit makign us pose for all of these, You write the caption pictures." Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  20. Its best to know what bugs are in a cahce before you find it, If you thow the destinations or goals of bugs its a lot easier to know which ones you can and can't help. I make a list of bigs that are in caches I'm going to hunt and wether or not I can help them so that I'll know if I should pick them up or not. If I coem across a bug I don't know of in a cache I'll most likely leave it, unless its an extremely rarely visited cache. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  21. The first cache i found was quite wet and most of the thing in it were ruined. I did take a keychain that I eventually dropped in another cache. To the best of my knowledge I have only kept 3 things I have found in caches. The frist a shut off valve with fittings for a garden hose which I now use in my pool heater. I also have a traveling frog from the Lilly Pad sadly the registry is no longer working, untill (and if it does) the frogs are tracked again I'm going to hold onto it I like the frogs. And I have a wooden Indiana County bicentenial coin that I intend to keep from BVNA. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  22. We have a local cacher who's sig item is a mouse trap i cna't remember the user name but it seems we also have another cacher who's sig is setting the mouse traps and putting them back into the cache. I have yet to find one set but I am sure I won't be pleased when I do. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  23. I don't carry any trade items worth $20 if i wanted to take a $20 bill out of a cache i would have to leave my magellan. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  24. I watched X2 the other day. All the talk of coordinants was getting under my skin I was wanting to see where it was going. At the end of the coord talk when they were looking for Nightcrawler I could have sworn I saw Storm press a button in the X jet labeled GARMIN Was this a case of cache on the brain? Or is there an actual GARMIN button in the X jet? Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation. [This message was edited by Eeyore and Shadow on May 11, 2003 at 08:47 AM.]
