  1. A mistake is a mistake thats forgivable but the cache should still be archived or adopted. If its archived I am sure a local cacher will collect the cache and redistribute the contents. Leaving an archived cache hidden is nothing short of illegal littering. Eeyore A rocking chair or a porch swing with an old person in it is a histroy lesson.
  2. ok Those are relly cool, probably the best new items yet. A rocking chair or a porch swing with an old person in it is a histroy lesson.
  3. I was expeting more than that, considering the ammount of leftovers we left in you cooler while you were caching! Eeyore A rocking chair or a porch swing with an old person in it is a histroy lesson.
  4. If they were equiped to stay in the wood considerably longer then there were isn't it possible they miscalculated the time it would take and should have told thier keepers that the would be gone another day or two? A rocking chair or a porch swing with an old person in it is a histroy lesson.
  5. I'm a West Penn cacher, I have a SproTrak map, I have only evr once lost signal under heavy tree cover after a rain. I now wish I had bought the pro the map's memory is a little more limiting than I would like but it is a still a great reciver and I wouldn't trade it(except for a pro.) I saw a legend once at an event cache almost a year ago. I don't remember who owned it or how well it worked (we were under heavy tree cover that day as well.) But I do know it belonged to one of two cachers and they both have high find counts and didn't complain about performance as I recall. Any of the recievers you have mentioned seem to be a viable option at least in this area. Eeyore A rocking chair or a porch swing with an old person in it is a histroy lesson.
  6. the yellow etrex has the same patch antenna that most pricier garmin modles have except for a few quadrifilier helix antenna units which are slightly better under tree cover but not enough to warrant purchacing another unit right away (in my opinion) the yellow etrex will work fine for caching if signal loss due to tree cover is an issue head for a clearing or lighter cover to get position and try to estimate where you need to go. 7. Most larger pet supply stores sell hand held black likghts, as "stink finders" the one I have has a small incandescent flash light bulb at one and and a 5" florescent black tube along its length. I have had it for a few years but i'm sure I didn't pay more than $10 for it and it help a lot when scrubbing carpet and furniture to find areas that still have biochemical stains. 8. As simply as possible, EPE is the ammount that the coords shown can be wrong. If your display says you are at N40° 30.000' W80° 30.000' and your EPE is 7 feet those actual coords are within 7 feet of where you are. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  9. That is an incredible story. I am glad both Freelens and Seatrout took the time to write everything into the notes. It is a story worth telling. At least I'm not the only one that has these misadventures. Though the stroy of us running into the bear on our first day caching still gets people's attention. And My recent blackout while caching though embarassing is something I thought should have been logged. Assuming that a cache is short or easy enough not to require taking water with you is a bad idea. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  10. Well west penn cachers are getting easy to spot, we are the people wearing fishing vests no where near a place to fish. After seeing Daddy Lep's vest it just seemed so much more logical than toting around a huge pack full of crap. My fishinv vest may weigh 15lbs but it doesn't wear as heavily as a pack and allows me to use a much smaller less expensive hydration pack than I would need woth all the other crap in it. We personally have never run across any other cachers on the trail. We once say a couple that we thought may have been cachers but we wern't sure. The must not have been there were no other logs for that cache the day we were there. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.

  12. With a 315 averaging is more an annoyance than a help. If you don't mind standing in one sopt for 10 minutes then you can wait on it otherwise when averaging starts move a little and you will get an EPE (estimated position error) which will tell you how accurate the shown coorinants are. which I find much more useful than averaging. 13. I used to make duplicate logs in my personal log book and in the cache log book. I have a very poor short-term memory. I was finding that I was spending a lot of time at or near cache sites doing that, so I decided to make a short entry in the cache log and forego the personal log book for a micro cassette recorder. Now I spend only a few minutes with the cache and have all the detail I need for a more colorful online log. I have had the micro cassette recorder for years but only used it at work to record ideas quickly. Now its getting more used than ever.(yeah I know I'm saying that I don't often have good ideas.) 14. if you remember the names of the caches you can search for key words or use the cache number GCxxxx as your waypoints and you can search by number. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  15. It sounds to me like a good time and place to start a day of group caching. It would be easy to find and a very specific time to get everyone there to start the day. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  16. Shadow and I are goign to try to make it, I'm not sure if we can commit yet. but thats what i said 12 years ago too. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  17. I tried to like TJW as I try to like everyone. It was TJW that made me dislike him, I'm not saying wether some of the thinks he said were true or not and I don't particularly care. But most of them seemed not to be true leat alone bot believable. Every time I saw TJW he was complaining or arguing, which makes it hard to like anyone. I don't like to state the obvious too much but I am sure TJW will assist. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  18. Edit after rereading the problem. There is most likely a lithium battery which supports the memory, It wil lhave to be returned to garmin to be replaced. Or you may want to upgrade before putting money into a GPS12.
  19. I don't know about the gekos but i do know the sportrak has north finder, if you know how to use it it can be very handy. It has a sun an dmoon icon that moves around the compass screen. If you align either the sun or moon with the icon looking through the center of the compass screen your cardinal points are actually aligned. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  20. Mogolloyd you are lucky, every time I read one of lep's logs I hear it in his voice, and i can imagine the faces he makes while saying it! Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  21. I like Team Kender's idea but I was thinking, hide the GPSr in a box in the yard somewhere. Sketch a map of the yard with an "X" making the spot. Inside the box with the GPSr and a printed cache page or two leave a note saying "Maybe this will help with the next hunt" or something to that effect. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  22. This is an eay one, get a stroller with a canopy covering. Mount the meridian on top of the canopy and put a baby doll in the stroller. From a distance you like like any ordinary parnet and up close you look like a nut. Euther way people leave you alone. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  23. Sign in a parking lot near a cache "Do not enter. This is not an exit" I was quite preplexed trying to figure out what it was if not an entrance or an exit. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  24. As for the few finds that is irrelavent if you think you can hide a good cache, and you will find out if its a good cache or not after the first few people find it. Trading on a themed cache is always a sensitive thing in a themed cache. You can sugest that trades be themed which will help but that doens't ensure themed trades. You can sugest either TNLN for those that don't have a themed item or permit off theme trading. Either way you are still going to get things in you don't want. But informaing the cacher on the cache page is going to help no matter what you decide to do, and noting inside the cache in the log book or a big sticker or sign in it saying that it is a themed cache will help fo those that don't look at cache pages. But no matter what eventually its going to get to be off theme just depending on what steps you take to try to keep it themed will influence how long it stays to the theme. Eeyore I'm one sat short of triangulation.
  25. Magellan 315 has an EPE (estimated position error) which tells you how inaccurate the coords that it is displaying could be. But EPE is only avaliable in the main nav screen and it only works while you are moving, when its not moving it starts averaging and doesn't display the EPE. Try going to where the coords say is correct, stop and wait a minute to make sure that its not going to float (move slightly as it gets stronger/weaker signals) looking at the main nav screen start walking untill it stops averaging and shows the EPE, then you will have an idea of how far you could be from the stated coords.
