  1. this web sight is way off on the history of geroching. I cant claim to have started it like the guy who runs this sight thinks he did but I know he didn't Me and a group of buddies have been doing geocahcing since about 1980 course we dint have gps back then and used map and compass but some one needs to get the history straight. recently I took a class of geocahcing in the area and heckled the instructor because he treated this web sight has the Bible of geoaching I was like wrong it is not the office web page the owner just thinks he started it and like to pat him self on the back.
  2. I know there is one in cody wyoing park county but you have none listed for park county quote:Originally posted by RogBarn:The table of airway beacons is done (phew!). I'm sure there are some I've missed, if you let me know, I'll add them to the table. I split the table in two, east and west of the Mississippi, go to the old link to find the links or go direct here: http://walden.mvp.net/~rogbarn/airway_beacons_east.htm and http://walden.mvp.net/~rogbarn/airway_beacons_west.htm Feedback is still a good thing!
  3. I think we need an extrem bench mark huting contest. I found on on top of the grand teton which is a huge motuain that you have to climb with ropes what is the pouropse of that ebnch mark elvation
  4. this weekend geting ready to climb the grand tetion I looked for a few bench nmarks in to palces almost extaly were the cordantees said the bench mark would be instead was a long would steak with survey tape tied arond the top. and the bench makrer number wrtien on it. the digi cam dioed other wise I would have take a pict. did they do that tell the bech nark is repalced.
  5. I weant to our local highway enginer and got some pics that were shot from the airplane when they were getign ready to move our highway. In it in most of the psots of the bench marks is a obvloise thign you can see in the pictures do they put somthing on the bench marks so they will show up on the aerial maps.
  6. Hey it the owner of the boardes fault he can't add somthign has a spell check tot he post function then that is his fault I won't cut and paist to make every thign perfect. quote:Originally posted by elcamino:Looks like you need this utility http://www.iespell.com/
  7. it loks like they are laying out were the buidling will set. today they had a back how out and was diging a large hole after they got it dug the one surverior jumped in the hole with the reflter pole thing from the transite adn shot a line from the totel sttion to the guy in the hole not sure what that was about. quote:Originally posted by survey tech:They may have been marking something other than property lines. Surveyors lay out all kinds of structures, easements, setbacks, etc., so its impossible to tell what they are doing, or why they are doing it, without inquiring. Next time just ask for an explanation, if they have time they will probably be willing to explain what they are doing, how and why. If its your property, and you think something is being done wrong, you have the right to question it.
  8. I will go up this weekend and phto it. I know it has been reported to the blm who aclty the forest service sid has the ultimte respobity for all bounderies and lands. the head forest enginer said they are aboe the people whose database were using. But he siad when they moved the highway they ran into that oen being real wrong. quote:Originally posted by teamcourage:Well on this particulre one I will re look it up and post it they list the drive way to our familes ranch. ther eis only one rnach by that name and there is no way that there cna be abnother one by that name. If you find something 10 miles away from where it was supposed to be, you are probably finding something entirely different. The great majority of errors in the data are clerical in nature, such as typos, due to the massive amount of data that has been processed, and not the result of the survey data itself, which except for the most remote points, has been used and checked many times down through the years. Points listed in the wrong county, and other similar office blunders, not related to the actual mathematical data, are usually just ignored by surveyors, since they are so obvious that they are not likely to cause any problems for professionals who generally already know where the points in their work area are.

  10. We have a new busness going in were ther eused to be a public city owned parking lot and a house. they bought the house and tore it down then bought the parking lot from the city. Today they were surving it I guess to find the bounmderies. they guy had a gps with one of those backpack antainies " I know I killed that word" Any ways at one place it used the gps and took a reading then looked in a book then went to a computer then came back and took the reading again. and re checked his book and map Then he put in what looked like a bench mark then he went to the other corners and took reding and dint look in a book but did on a map and put a wood steak and painted it pink. then he did sevral other areas but not cornes the same way. the benck mark lookng thing just has the survey comapny name and an l-21 he then painted a bunch of lines in the dirt. . Is that how they map out a property and why was he so psecific on that one point. that point isn't the sotres new boundery for property becuse it wasnt out in the city owen parkeing lot that know belongs to the busnes but more were the house proprty used to be.
  11. I found one here in wyoming that the cordantes were so far off it wasnt funey. IT said scalled so we went to the basment of the forest service office and dug out the exact map they owuld have used when they bench mark was set. and even using the corndnates on that map make sit even firther off. there cordnates put it dang near in town not near yellowsoten park. They also moved a ranch over 10 miles boy isnt that nigce that a hole ranch can just be moved by some surveriors error quote:Originally posted by RogBarn:I'm starting a new topic here for major datasheet errors. Please do not post questions, comments or answers about scaled vs adjusted coordinates, how to post benchmarks not in the database, or correcting errors in the history. Errors in history can be easily corrected by submitting a recovery report to the NGS. Here is my current major datasheet error: http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.asp?PID=MF1823 is listed in Cook County, IL. Everything else listed in the datasheet, including both the coordinates and the description place it firmly in La Salle County, nowhere near Cook County. In the archived datasheets, it is placed in the Cook County file. Can this be corrected?
  12. ok if it works here is the link on tera server I belive the wavy line is the river but wear is the road that runs right next to the river or is that the road. IF it si the road I sure don't rember curves like that. http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.aspx?t=1&s=14&x=194&y=1538&z=12&w=1
  13. that must be it becsue I know when I tried them before they were faster and I never got that error. are you any good at reading them. If you go to wapiti wyoming I can see the river hast he wavy thing then there is a faint line near the river which I belive is the road. I wish that whole area was on one pic map. what type of local office govt type would have those. Also you listed utah what about wyoming.
  14. I am ondering if the tera server is the only maps shot from in the air the picture map things that youc an searcha dn get some with out cost. 15. If it says radio tower is the radio tower the marker. I went up to the tower and onlt foudn the tower but not any markers
  16. How do you get the caps off if the marker is under a pipe. quote:Originally posted by skydiver:Has anybody located a bechmark with a PVC pipe and cap protecting it? If so, how did you confirm you found it? A friend of mine found a http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.asp?PID=RY0714 that was like this, but the cap was previously damaged and easily removed. I think I may have discovered a http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.asp?PID=RY0711 but, there are two PVC pipes with caps sticking from the ground at the location, and both caps are very secure. To complicate matters further, nearly all of the landmarks listed in the description have disappeared or seriously moved since the 1979 description, so I could easily be in the wrong spot and there's not a benchmark under either cap. It's in a very high traffic area, so I'm more than a little nervous about walking up with a pipe wrench and taking stuff apart to investigate. I've got a similar pipe/cap combo in my backyard that is part of the sewer (I think), and I'm sure is not a benchmark, which makes me even more nervous about trying to get either of these other two caps off. Has anybody else encountered this kind of situation, and if so, what did you do? This is my first attempt at benchmarking, and now I'm not sure if I can sleep without solving this quandry. Thanks. http://www.rusticweb.com/geocaching/caps.jpg --- Two paths diverged in a wood, and my... my GPSr pointed dead center between them. --- [This message was edited by skydiver on June 11, 2002 at 07:57 AM.]

I know that when I got to do a survey project for collige were we escuvated an indina villige in utah the survaior that came along with us had a small log book for evry amchine he had.
