  1. OK... thats what I thought... I knew if you could get enough "slop" out of everything and tighten it it, the harder it would be to "cheat" it this way... was just wondering how it all felt on one already built with the plans. Yes! Still DEFINATELY a very cool container and idea!
  2. Great job on the plans! I just have one concern: When i was a kid, i used to have a bicycle chain lock that operated on the same basic concept of the cryptex. Now, i know those locks were cheaply made, but we used to be able to open them by pulling the ends apart, putting tension on the rings/pins, while rotating the first ring, until we felt it "engage"...then the next ring, and so on, until we were able to get it open without having to know the combo. Just wondering if its possible to do the same with yours or not? Sure wouldnt want anyone to "cheat" it open just by feel... []

  4. Sounds like you need to check out the GSAK and cachemate forums, or email the owners for this one. I would say this question should be already posted somewhere on their respective forums. Actually, I just did a search of the GSAK forum and came up with this: http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=5581 http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=5637 http://www.smittyware.com/forums/viewthread.php?tid=422 http://www.smittyware.com/forums/viewthread.php?tid=404 http://www.smittyware.com/forums/viewthread.php?tid=179 http://www.smittyware.com/forums/viewthread.php?tid=88
  5. I'm now wondering how this cache: Is any different from this cache: And why one is archived, and the other, more famous one is not? Seems the famous one would draw more bad press with land managers than the non-descript one that got archived.
  6. GSAK for sure. I think the reason it has a steep learning curve, and why people seem overwhelmed with it when first using it, is that it does SOOO much. Just start with the default program, and READ the tutorials. Then, as you think of different was you would like your data sorted or exported, goto to the GSAK forums and read the FAQs, or do a search. Someone has probably already posted the same question you have. Like already stated, GSAK support is AWESOME! Also, the help files in the program are THE BEST I have ever seen! The interactive graphics in the help file are awesome! If you have a question on a setting or field, just click on it, and the help window pops up.
  7. OK...so my geography isnt that great...LOL Speaking of which, I ran into Szuchie at Paleoman's Cave this afternoon...We were talking about the original Hunters Creek cache...Coincidentally, Szuchie said he and "Urkel" had both heard the original cache was still there, and that you had both looked for it... LOL
  8. The Spot (GC39) is the: 1st cache placed in the eastern US (East of the Mississippi). 1st cache placed in NY. 13th cache ever placed in the US. 17th ever placed Worldwide. Oldest active in NY 4th oldest active in the US 6th oldest active in the World. I believe it still has the original logbook, also. I cant believe it only has 103 finds. Although, by todays standards, the diff/terr ratings are too high. Should be about a D2/T3
  9. Here's a hint: When placing a new cache, Do NOT drop a TB into the cache until AFTER it is officially published.
  10. I've been researching BT GPSR's myself all week. Taking a look at several different brands, from low to mid-price, I see most of them with the new MTK chipsets have slightly better specs listed than the SirfIII, and were generally cheaper. I ended up getting a Qstarz Q818. Hopefully i will have it in my hands next Tues or Wed., and hope o run it through its paces in the next couple weeks with my Palm Lifedrive. Sometime soon after, i hope to be able to come up with the funds to buy Fugawi for mapping, since it works with the Palm, and as I'm also a very amateur GIS geek.
  11. Exactly my point. I just have a problem by making my points using sarcasm & satire. People need to just chill.
  12. Yeah, dont worry about your Gold being "old"..LOL IMHO, the Meridians are probably still the best handheld receivers Magellan has ever made. It will still be a few more years before they are really obsolete. And, yes, get GSAK or EasyGPS to load your waypoints.
  13. Thats funny. This morning i went to a local craft store with my daughter to check out their bird houses for a similar type of hide. Love the idea, and may try to replicate. I love inventive hides. Thanks for sharing! I dont know about this idea....If you do this, then people may get the idea REAL birdhouses may be cache containers, and tear them apart searching for the contents, and disturb the wildlife in bird sanctuaries. Just think of all those broken eggs, and abandoned baby birds after they get the human scent on them. I would strongly advise against this type of container. Besides, people who find these may like the idea so much, they decide to place similar containers of their own...Then where would we be?...probably complaining on the forums about the outbreak of lame birdhouse caches...Oh the Horror!!!
  14. Wow...Seeing this guy just makes me want to run right out and get one...NOT!!! Never mind...Link wont work...LOL
  15. 1) should be OK 2) probably wont fly. I believe they changed the rules so that everything needed to find a cache must be listed on the cache page. 3) probably pushing the same thing as 2) above. 4) should be OK.
  16. Not sure how these compare in price with other places, but: http://www.galleria-e.com/cgi-bin/Colemans.../product/130401
  17. Where was this cache? Just wondering if it was in western NY?
  18. Dont forget to look under the pile of same length, parrallel sticks that are lying at the base of a tree, or against a log....
  19. If you ever get over along the Genesee River, between Mt Morris (Letchworth SP) and the PA border, drop me a line. I can give you a heads up on quite a few. Most are intermediate hikes, of not much more than a mile or three, but I seem to be expert at turning these into long, 7 to 10 mile, all day hiking adventures...LOL I usually end up taking routes and seeing scenery 95% of cachers who do them, never see.
  20. Another choice is this stuff: Bare Metal Plastic Polish There are other similar polishes that can be found at just about any hobby shop. They are designed for styrene plastic...A very soft plastic. Also, modelers can be pretty picky about their clear plastic finishes. OT, but I bet this stuff would work great on plastic automotive headlight lenses that get dull with age.
  21. Hmmm...I wonder if there is something like this for Giant Hogweed, which seems to be the NEW flora-from-hell in our area...???
  22. LOL...I know how you feel...I wish caching had been around when I was stationed in Cali, and overseas... I've been wanting to move to AZ/NM/NV/UT or maybe Colorado for the past 15yrs, but I'm stuck in NY...Although I like NY most of the year, I just HATE the winters now...
