  1. In Mapsource, be sure that you have the correct (your model) GPS selected. Set Mapsource on YOUR model, and it will only show what symbols are compatible to YOUR GPS. The only reason points sent from Mapsource to your unit defaulted to the blue flag is because that is what symbol YOU had selected in your unit WHEN THE POINTS WERE TRANSFERRED. Re-read and understand the last paragraph in the quote above. I DID read and understand your last paragraph: my GPS model is correctly selected (Utilities >> Get Unit ID, and it shows GPSMap60CSX in the Device drop down, with no other choices and I can't find any other way to change it). But MapSource shows MORE symbols than what are compatible to MY GPS, (as well as having more, some just aren't the same): MS has 211, including letters, numbers, "contacts" plus the 24 custom ones My GPSr has 162 plus custom, and, coincidently, the only "little black square" is the one I created in the "custom" section (on the unit)! I don't think I'm missing anything. And I understand the "blue flag" issue. One reason I'm being so particular is that I'm color blind and have trouble seeing many of the symbols in both MS and GPSr, against various backgrounds, and would like the ones I select to transfer to the unit - except they don't appear in the unit! Thanks for putting up with me.
  2. I upgraded to 6.11.5. But there are many symbols in MapSource that aren't listed in the unit, which are then defaulted to the blue flag. How can I get the symbols I designate in MapSource to show in my GPSr, short of creating a custom symbol?
  3. OK, I have another question regarding waypoint symbols... MapSource has a whole bunch of symbols that aren't in the GPSr, and vice-versa, and therefore don't display the same when one does an upload/download from PC to unit. Is there anyway to get each to display what the other has? I have a GPSmap 60CSx and MapSource 6.10.2. Thanks.
  4. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Thank you Grasscatcher for the link and ThePropers for the wonderful, detailed information found here. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for! I wasn't having trouble creating the symbols, but getting them into the GPSr and back into MapSource. I am now on my way (and HAPPY). THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! (LOVE this forum!)
  5. Pardon my ignorance, but I JUST posted something about custom waypoint symbols. Sorry to repeat myself, but how do you get those symbols into the "Custom" portion of your GPSr and when you download to MapSource, do they move also? I have xImage and can't figure it out. I'm not actually stupid, just un-knowing. Thanks. Got GPS, Do you still have these Icons ? More? and would you be willing to post them?
  6. Hi all, I have a Garmin GPSMAP 60 CSx and am having issues with waypoint symbols. Whenever I add a waypoint on the unit ("Mark" while the unit is in operation) it automatically gives it a blue flag symbol. When I download to Garmin's MapSource program I get that symbol. If I change it to the little black square (much cleaner on the screen) and then upload back to the unit, it changes it to the blue flag again. How can I change it to stay the little black square? And maybe I'm stupid, but I've tried xImage to create custom waypoint symbols and I just can't figure it out. Anybody have an easy, or even difficult fix? Thanks in advance.
  7. But what if I "Save" a Track, i.e., a portion of my complete track, while I'm in the field. Is there a way to retain the Time and Avg Speed? Or would I have to turn the unit off to save it as the Active Log? -- And is that indeed how it works? If I turn the unit off, it saves the Active Log, as 001, then starts Active Log 002 at next start-up, stopping it at shut-off, starting 003 next start-up, etc.?) Thanks again.
  8. I have a question about Tracks and Track Property in Mapsource. After I download data from my Garmin 60Csx, transfer it to Mapsource (v 6.10.2), when I double-click on "Active Log 001", "Active Log 002" etc. I get Points, Length, Area, Elapsed Time and Avg. Speed, but when I "Save" a Track (on the GPSr, in the field), the unit gives the track a name (the current date), and when I open that Track in Mapsource I don't get the Elapsed Time and Avg Speed. Is there a way to get that information? Why does it only show for the "Active Log"s? Thanks
  9. It looks like you may have it fixed, but another few cents... I had a similar problem and my solution (thanks to this same forum, see thread here), is that the GPSr needs to be connected directly to the computer, not through a hub or other extended USB port. Since, it works everytime!
  10. Timpat, and others... Just got back from an afternoon of kayaking and swimming, and it's off to a BBQ, so I'll try this "workaround" later. I have sent off an e-mail to Garmin too and will wait for their answer. Thanks to all for your input
  11. Please pardon a silly question, but you have uploaded your City Navigator North America v8 mapping into your Map60Cx, correct? The routable mapping has to be in the GPSr to autoroute. Yes... you mean "Maps", as in abt 3.00 to 6.5 MB each, to the card in the 60Csx, right? Yes, I have selected 7 "chunks" of them, surrounding my area, and the routes I created are well within that area. Aside from selecting the areas that I need/want with the "Map Tool" and then "Send to Device", there isn't any other settings, for the maps, is there? And in Edit > Preferences > Routing, I have "Use Auto-Routing" selected. I really hope that I've simply missed something, because it seems that the 60CSx should be doing what I think (see earlier post) it should be doing (sigh, again). Thanks
  12. I've done that too. Maybe I'm asking too much of my GPS (sigh). And I hope I'm explaining myself rightly. What I want is this: I want to SEE, on the GPSr, the route (which, btw, does not start at my present position) that I created on my PC, turn-by-turn. I don't want to navigate it (yet), but I feel that I should be able to SEE the route (by selecting "Map), on the Map, as I created it, NOT as a straight line. I'm not flying it, I'm driving it! Is that too much to ask? Or doesn't my $500 worth of maps and electronics do that? BTW, when I select "Navigate", it navigates me from my present position to the start of the route I created to the end of that route. I don't want that either, but it seems to make sense for the GPSr to do it that way.
  13. I have MapSource software 6.10.2, with MapSource City Navigator North America v8. The software does turn-by-turn and I get a nice route on my PC. I've even changed my settings (faster time, prefer highways @ different levels) and it gave me a different route. But when I send those routes to my Garmin 60Csx, they don't follow the same route, they show a straight line!? Is there something wrong with my GPSr? Should I call Garmin? It sure seems like I should be able to transfer my auto-routed map to my handheld just like it is on my PC software!!! Isn't that why I spent ALL THIS MONEY?
  14. I did that. I deleted all routes on GPSr, reloaded them from MapSource (v 6.10.2) and it's still the same - when I select "Map" from the "Route" screen, it shows my route as a straight line. And if I select "Navigate" on the "Route" page, it navigates from my present position to the end of that Route, i.e., it doesn't show my selected route (which starts elsewhere than my present position). In the "Routing Setup" page, I have selected: "Follow Road" for Guidance Method, "Faster Time" for Follow Road Method, "Car/Motorcycle" for Calculate Routes for, and everything else appears normal. I think that's all correct. Thanks
  15. It's probably simple, I've tried some settings, but... I've created some turn-by-turn routes in MapSource, sent them to my device (GPSMAP 60Csx) and when I retrieve them... Menu, Tracks, Saved Routes, Map (not Navigate), they show up as a direct route, not Turn-by-Turn. WHAT HAVE I DONE WRONG?
  16. Can the 60Csx connect (directly) to a PDA? (I have a Palm Zire 72) How is that done? What software/program is required?
  17. Once again, information and entertainment! Thanks for the help. Eric
  18. I've only had my Garmin 60CSx for about two weeks, and I feel I've learned most of it's ins and outs (with many thanks, also, to the widespread knowledge on this forum), but I don't know what this is, maybe someone can help. It's only happened a couple of times, I don't know how/why and I've tried various settings to replicate it while connected to USB in order to snap an xImage, but no joy. It goes like this: when the unit is "Acquriing Satellites" a small graphic appears in the lower left, covering parts of the first 3 or 4 satellite bars. It looks kinda like the Hollywood Video searchights, and it goes away when the satellites are acquired. Again, i've only seen it maybe 2 or 3 times. Any ideas? Thanks, Eric
  19. Hi. I am lurker... but a NEW lurker. I recently got my first GPSr as an addition to our new kayak purchase and have now gotten into geocaching. Have only done a few local searches (Royal Oak, MI) with one daughter, but we both had fun and are seeking out more. I've made a few posts, having had a few questions about my Garmin, and have picked up information/tips by reading other posts. The forums are informative and indeed entertaining. Eric
  20. It's a shame that we all have to he SOOOOOO PC these days. But if anyone wants, they can join my religion: I'm a born-again heathen.
  21. Connecting directly to the 1.1 port on my computer did it! I DO have a 4 port USB 2.0 PCI card, and everything else I have works OK with it, but the GPS didn't like it, or the monitor ports. So far I haven't uploaded any maps or anything (on order) so it's quick. But we'll see when the files get bigger... after all: I DON'T HAVE ALL SECOND! Eric
  22. I was connecting into my flat screen which is then connected to the 'puter (so would that be considered a hub?). I have since connected directly to the original port on the computer (which is actually a 1.1 USB) and so far MapSource has been able to "see" the GPSr each time and I've been able to upload and download several times. Hopefully that's done it! But isn't that what USB is supposed to be? Able to connect many devices to each other? Sheeeesh... and all my investment... Thanks for the input. I'm entering some caches, as we're headed up north for a few days of vacation. This is a great forum. I've been lurking for a couple of days and picked up some pointers already and hope to learn more, and maybe someday help someone else. Thanks!
  23. Try pushing the usb connection on your device until it clicks. You describe what just happened to me on my identical unit I just bought. Hope it works. My error was "Lost Power Shutting Down" Ken Well... that's not it - the connection is fine. What seems to work is that if I turn on the software and then turn on device then do the transfer, in that order and without too much time lag. It just seems that I should be able to leave the device on for a while and still maintain the connection. Anyone else find anything similar? Eric
  24. Greetings, I'm new to GPS, but am good at computers and figuring things out, but I'm a bit stumped here. I have a new 60CSx which seems to be working fine. I installed the Garmin Trip and Waypoint manager that came with the unit, and that also seems to be working fine. However, the connection between the GPS and my PC doesn't always work. When I first connect the GPS via USB I can sometimes download immediately. If I leave it connected for a few minutes, then the "Find Device" won't find my device. And after DO download and make changes on the PC, I cannot send it back to the device. My 60CSx has software 2.90 and GPS SW version 2.6 and my Windows Device Manager shows that I have driver 2.1.0.0, 9/23-03, grmsgen.sys and grmnusb.sys. Thanks in advance, Eric
