  1. Between GW6, camping for a week afterwards, and then catching up with Life, the Universe and Everything , I've not had much time for these fora. So I was really pleased to see this thread, which got me to check out your website, where I see that these are still available These look very good in the photos, so I'm sure that they'll be great in person!! Can't wait to put one or two in caches
  2. 1. Participating - YES 2. Received Name - a month ago, but just getting around to actually looking at it. It came just after we got home from GW6 and camping, which isn't an excuse, mind you, but it certainly works as one 3. Mission Sent - not yet; there's still lots of time for me to procrastinate 4. Birthday Arrived - a tad early for that. Cheerio! chaosmanor
  3. FWIW, I've started sending out our geocoins and TBs with notes that ask folks to pick them up and move them, whether they trade or not, that the traveler does *not* need to be traded for. I really get annoyed when I see Discoveries on our geocoins that read, "Didn't have a TB to trade, so just left it in the cache for the next person." Aaaaaaa! People! Just pick 'em up and move 'em! This was not a problem 3-4 years ago; people would rush out to pick up new TBs that showed up. Somewhere over the past couple of years, folks got the mistaken idea that TBs and geocoins needed to be traded for. They don't. And any cache that requires a trade for a traveler is just plain wrong. If a cache owner sets up a Hotel and requires that folks trade because the owner is too lazy to keep TBs in it, then that owner has a problem. We have a traveler hotel that specifically states that folks do not need to leave a TB to take one. I keep an eye on it and if it gets low, I go out and add more to the can. That's the only fair way to do it, IMHO.
  4. GREAT IDEA!!!! I have just one tiny suggestion, however; make the tracking number a little bigger, please Seriously, I love this idea! I've complained more than a few times in the past about teeny-tiny-miniscule ID numbers; this will be the perfect antidote to that And I like the coloring exactly as it is; I think that silver will be perfect with black and red. I have a real love of copper, but I wouldn't recommend that with this design. Go with polished silver, and you won't need anything else. BTW: I think that one of the '6's on the face should be a '9'
  5. Appreciate the heads-up! We have thoughts of caching in that area after GW6, so will avoid leaving any travelers.
  6. While I'm not going to tell others that they are nuts, the idea of dropping active geocoins into an unsubmitted cache is nuts OK, so I lied; you're nuts! FWIW, we have a few hundred geocoins in our private collection which are all logged into an old cache of ours which was active for a couple of years, but has been archived for even longer. It's just a mile or so from home, so serves the purpose, and they are always going to be visible to others. Never had a problem with access and they don't show up in our inventory when I am writing our Find logs. I don't see the point of "wasting" a waypoint number like that, not when it is quite likely that any cacher who has been around for even a few months already has an archived cache. Granted, there are an unlimited supply of waypoints, it just seems "pointless" to do it that way, if you'll pardon the pun. If there is a practical reason for not doing it our way, I'd love to read it.
  7. I agree; there really isn't a lot more that you can do in a case like this. As the bumper sticker says (OK, it doesn't, but it ought to!), "Muggles happen". You can't predict these things. You did the right thing by letting the owners know. If they get upset with you, ignore them. Now, if *you* lose a geocoin, that's a different matter. Offering a replacement or some other form of recompense is the honorable thing to do if you lose a geocoin on the trail, in your car, etc. But that isn't what happened here. And yes, travelers *do* show up again. We had a TB go missing for over 18 months, then it showed up. And a geocoin that vanished from a cache that was muggled a week later showed up on a street and was found by a geocacher. What are the odds?!? The Universe is a strange place
  8. Also, "B" and "8" can look a lot alike, as can "I" and "1". For that matter, I've also mistaken "Q" for "O" or "0"; some fonts and stampings just don't come out as cleanly as others. Another possibility to look out for is that some geocoins have both a tracking number and a serial number. Be sure that you are using the tracking number. If you've tried all of these possibilities, and the thing still isn't working, then I'd try writing to Groundspeak, as The-Wolf-Pack suggested. Good luck!
  9. The OP asked for some "Why?", so let me give you a little of that. My interest in them is on two levels: I like the designs on many of them, and I like stories that many of them tell. We have five albums in our collection. These are geocoins that we have bought, or in a few cases were given to us. We also have a couple of hundred geocoins in circulation (and a few that are lost). We also have a bunch of travel bugs, but geocoins are a little more interesting, in many ways, and they fit into caches that won't take a TB. I love to find geocoins in caches, and I do what I can to get them moving along. Geocoins are a part of the game that adds a little interest. Some folks won't pick up a geocoin or TB for any reason; I'll never understand that attitude. I think that travelers add something to the game
  10. I would really like to get a couple copper ones. Glow and/or glitter are not important; I'd just like to get a couple of the original colors. A remint of them would be great, please. Thanks for asking!
  11. I remember posting a request for larger numbers more than a year ago. Now that I am closer to 60 than to 50 , the need is getting more pronounced, but the number of coins with teeny numbers just gets bigger. For those producers who say that it can't be done, that larger numbers take up too much space, I refer you to Crake's geocoins. This guy puts out some of the most intricate designs anywhere, yet his ID numbers are almost always very large. It can be done, if you put a little thought into it.
  12. Sure hope that'll be enough! Any idea of the cost, yet?
  13. Very colorful! Hope there are a few left over
  14. Boy, can *I* relate! I was born with a cleft palate, a hare-lip and a deviated sceptum. Underwent surgery a couple of times when I was very young; this was in the early 1950s, when plastic surgery was still something of a rare thing. Went through all the speech therapy stuff, too; didn't help a bit, of course. I managed to turn it into a positive when I went into sports officiating; with my distinctive voice, no one could claim I said something that I didn't ;-) But my small problems (I also get migraines) are nothing to your other ones; congrats for being such a positive influence in the world :-) My actual, *real* story is about our youngest grandchild: Jaydelynn was born legally blind. Fortunately, Bethany (our oldest), son-in-law Jason and their kids all live less than an hour from Oxford, Alabama, home of the Helen Keller Institute, so they have lots of help and advice :-) To their credit, they have never wondered what they "did wrong" to have had a blind child. They treat her just like the other three (with a few limitations, of course), and the others treat her just like their other siblings. We've been lucky enough to visit with them a couple of times, and it is really amazing to watch them interact. "Jaydy" has some vision, but until she starts talking better (she's behind in that area), they can't really tell what she can see. It ought to be interesting as she gets older, to "see" what her world is like from the inside.
  15. Oh, *that'll* be the day The State can't pay for what it has on its plate already. California is facing a 9 billion dollar ($9,000,000,000) budget shortfall for this year, alone. The Governator is pushing a revision to the Tribal Gaming Compacts that will infuse about a third of that a year for the next 25 years, but there is no guarantee that it will pass next Tuesday, and it really is only going to help cover the current obligations. Two of our three girls work in the "people with challenges" system, and there's never enough money. There's no more gold in the Golden State
  16. We have 524 activated geocoins, and likely about that many unactivated that I haven't gotten around to working on, yet. Not even close to #1, but I think we're closer to the top than the bottom I bet that f0t0m0m is in the running for #1, but they almost never post here, so I looked at their profile: only 400 or so activated, but I bet that they have far more unactivated than we do. If they had them all in the system, it might be a couple of thousand. As for Marky, I can't imagine actually moving 2000 Travel Bugs!
  17. Gotta get a few of these! We saw the actual clock two years ago, when we spent a few days in Venice What a wonderful city!
  18. FWIW, I tend to buy at least two of every geocoin that we (my wife and I) buy. We usually keep one of each and send one out "Into The Wild" in a geocache. But many times, I'll buy a third, to hold onto for trading purposes. I have a bag full of these geocoins; every once in a while I'll trade one for something we don't have. I think that if you look at this as akn to baseball cards, or Olympics pins, or regular coins, or stamps, or Disney pins, or anything like that, you'll not be too far off. The idea is to collect what you like, and maybe trade a few of the ones that you got an extra one of. You can do trading by mail; most coins cost under a dollar to mail.

  20. Ask and you will receive! Ours arrived today [] Very nice; eagerly awaiting news of the next one in the set.
  21. I am posting this here, rather than in the TB or Geocoin Forum, because it is a website issue, rather than one having to do with Travelers qua Travelers. The new calendar method is really flaky. It always comes up in the month of June; why doesn't it automatically assume the current month? We can change it if we need to do so, but the overwhelming majority of TB and geocoin activations are going to be on the current date, so the logical thing to do is to have it show today's date, and let us finagle it if we need to do so. The old method worked perfectly well, and is still being used for cache log dating. Please bring the old dating method back for Travelers. Thank you.
  22. Life has been a tad too full for me to spend a lot of time in this forum over the past couple of months, and to be honest, our spare cash is a little thin at the moment, and I had no desire to be tempted by all the neat stuff out there That being said, we've managed to pick up a few things here and there, among them being... 4 of Crake's Tiger Swallowtail coins (almost as nice as his Monarchs) 2 CinemaBoxers 10th Anniversary coins (very nice use of the "stained glass" effect) 4 Idaho 2007: 2 BN and 2 regular nickel and on Monday, the mail-lady (equipped with surgeon's mask) braved the smoke and wind to deliver three New Mexico 2007 Geez, this has been a horrible time to live in Southern California Still waiting to hear if my parent's place in Escondido survived. It is inside the Witch Creek Fire lines, but I got the answering machine yesterday afternoon, so I know that the lines are still up and the house is likely in one piece, if the machine survived Bet a lot of caches are gone; just hope that the cachers are OK! For the record, if anyone wants to work out a trade on a New Mexico, Idaho or Swallowtail, drop us a line through our profile. FCFS; we have one of each available.
  23. Too soon, whenever it is We're still paying for all of last year's Christmas coins! Oh, the marvelous wonders of plastic money
  24. Excellent! Thanks for the update Now I don't have to send you an e-mail about them, which saves both of us time With luck we'll get ours by Hallowe'en.
