  1. As forresth says, there is an FAQ in the files section of the Yahoo meridian group detailing how to edit the mapsend.ini to allow larger maps to be generated.
  2. The benfon looks really good, but about 800€ here in Germany. I looked to see if it would be cheaper with an air time contract but had no luck. The Ashtech in the other picture is a Magellan, or at least, it is a Thales navigation product. http://www.ashtech.com/en/about/ (I dont have one though) NG.
  3. The pics are very helpfull thanks for those. Perhaps you could post them to Magellen to see if they get the idea of what lengths we have to go to just to get a lanyard for our GPS.

  5. quote: Is my Magellan Gold capable of giving this track info. I am real interested in the speed info. I wasn't aware it stored that too. Yes, If you have the mapsend software from Magellen you can download a track and "Play it back" on the map at realtime or speed it up. Not sure if you can do this with other software? NG
  6. In response to the original question, Yes. I have only been up once in a ballon, but the pilot used a gps to determine where we were and didnt have any problems. I figure it is standard equipment these days? NG
  7. Hi, Here is the official site detailing the "performance of GPS" from the DoD. http://www.peterson.af.mil/usspace/gps_support/performance_reports.htm#Predictions Accuracy of GPS varies over time in different parts of the world, these maps generated by the DoD show how this error could affect your GPS. As far as I am aware they can alter the position of the satellites to change how the "performance" in different areas. Nothing to do with SA just satelite geometry, ionospheric interference and probably a few other factors. If they adjust it so that the signal is better at a base or not I have no idea (sorry!) The site contains some interesting infos in the FAQ too. NG
  8. The Brunton baseplate range are identical to the Silva models (except they have the word Brunton on them instead of Silva of course)Here is the quote from the Silva website "Products made by Silva Sweden are sold under the Brunton brand name in USA and Canada. " Anybody tried the new model (www.brunton.com or www.silva.se) "Especially for GPS users"? The 8096 GPS ECLIPSE Looks nice but doesn't have a traditional "needle" I like the look of Recta too, but I dont know how good they are for map work, as I have never used one. NG
  9. Wondered where I head heard BFG before! Is it realy that long ago!
  10. I searched the department stores and outdoor shops for a while for something suitable. A friend has the Magellen case and it didn't appeal to me either, I used a digital camera case to start with but wanted something more compact. I ended up with a "Phone Case - L" from Jack Wolfskin. http://www.wolfskin.de/eng/index_l.html# Search for 86492-600 in the products section. The GPS fits as do spare batteries in the front net. (It has a pen holder too, good if there is no pen in the cache!) The only problem I have with it is that the belt clip is a bit naff, but I am looking at sorting that somehow. The thing that gives the wolfskin pack an advantage is that the zip goes round part of the side, not just the top, this makes it easier to get in and out, most other small cases I found just had a top opening and although the specifications stated that it was big enough for the meridian it just wouldn't go in. Hope you find something suitable.
  11. Hello JeremyP Just for info, My German maps have use two datums WGS84 and Potsdam. An no, the UTM/WGS84 grid is not straight, confused me at first as I am used to using OS maps! The UTM co-ordinates use WGS84 as do the lat/long, but the german Gauss Krüger system uses the Potsdam datum. Fortunately the only grid on the map is the UTM. Cheers, Neil
  12. Hi ripz69 I know someone who wants to sell their copy, whereabouts are you (what country?) Regards NeilG
