  1. Cache ratings.... Is that something like rating the ladies at Mustang Ranch? Byron
  2. I load the data directly to SD card instead of the main memory during hotsync. Cachemate then examines the card and finds the data. If you're using GSAK, like I am, you will have to change in the hotsync dialog that comes up when GSAK is through converting to Cachemate format to put the data in the SD card. hope this helps a bit.
  3. Ya, I think we'll start with all that want a rating system. If the rating system rates caches from 1 to 10 where 10 is the best. Those that want the rating system will be rated at -100. That should get things started off on the right foot. Then all the rest of the caches have no place to go but up.
  4. We've been using collapseable hiking staffs for several years. Bought them a REI for a bit more than Wal-Mart knock offs. They're REI knock offs of another brand. The price was $50 each. The carbide tips aren't showing any wear. The paint is scratched in a few places. They do a couple of things for you. One of the first things I noticed when I started using it was that I could travel a bit faster. Second less wear and tear on the knees. Third, my arms and shoulders were sore the next day, but legs were a bit less sore. I did go on one hike where we had to put them away. They went into our daypacks without much trouble. Now a wooden stick long enough for staff would have to been carried in the hands. We were hiking over loose lava. The tip kept getting stuck between rocks, more work to extract from the rocks than saving. Which is another point for collapseable staffs. Byron
  5. And of course And now we must include
  6. Hmmm, I guess I don't quite make the smallest number thing. But there's only 4 digits in my number. Byron
  7. Going back to the original topic. What's Fair? Now one wonders if there is an answer to the question of "What's Fair?". What is the definition of "FAIR"?
  8. I have a web site with some tried and true tips for hiking with children. These worked quite well with our kids, and now are working with our grandkids. You might want to check it out here http://home.earthlink.net/~kinnamanhike/ Click on "Kid Tips" Byron
  9. There's been a lot of rumors about DEET. At this point in time all the negatives are rumors, at least from what I've read. We've been using 95% DEET 100% active ingredeaints for the last 25 years. Melted a couple plastic things in the process. Not all plastics are effected, I keep it in zip lock bags and it hasn't attacked them. Add some B vitimens to your diet and the skeeters won't bite so much. They'll still buzz in you ears though.
  10. Looking for flaws. Well it doesn't appear to have taken a lot of looking. Acutally I think the biggest mistake made was attacking somebody for pointing out two different stories for the same gps. If there would have been a fessing up to the earlier story instead of an attack for bringing it up, your integraty might have stayed intact. But...... If you're really interested in selling the unit, I suggest you appologize, close this topic, then wait awhile and try again. The longer this keeps up the worse you look and you expect somebody to trust you enough to send you $500? Rethink things a bit. Byron
  11. Back when Geocahing was about a year old I carved a piece of wood into the shape of a stump. Many caches were found in or aound stumps. I added a pin back and left it in a cache. The next finder made nice comments about it. So I carved a few more, then somebody suggested leaving something to indicate who made it. I then started leaving a business card proclaiming the finder had just found a "Byron's Famous Stump Pin". I've become known in the local area as the stump pin guy. Therefore it only seemed fitting that my avatar is a picture of a "Byron's Famous Stump Pin" By the way. Byron is also my real name as is Anne is the real name of the other half of our geocaching team. Edited to add: At a recent event I did a bit of a demonstartion and showed some ideas for signature item pins. If you're interested in some ideas you're welcome to visit the web site I created for that purpose. http://home.earthlink.net/~geocachepin/
  12. Where's that horse, or has he been kicked to pieces?
  13. I bought it to use while riding my motorcycle and the only few spots I can mount it are too close for my old eyes to see it without wearing my reading glasses. Since I don't wear them when riding it doesn't really work for me. TomB Huh, I guess I thought you were selling it because, as you said here, "You would be better off going to Staples and buying some scotch tape, a marker and a map." Or maybe because you also said, "you better look elsewhere, or waste your money." It seems to me that when you post things about your Explorist 500 such as, "If you want a GPS device look elsewhere" then there's more to this than a problem seeing the screen. Hi Geekgirl, The world could surely use a few more people like you. You must be a lot of fun at home or parties pointing out peoples flaws. Tell me, do you take notes? The GPS doesn't work for me but it is still a full featured device and what I am offering is well worth the money. There are many folks who use their toys different from me and will get a lot of fun out of this one. You are truly inspiring. TomB Hummmm,, I would say that Geekgirl was pointing out discrepancies in stories. If a story changes drasticly the story teller's intigrity is brought into question. Byron
  14. WOW are you ever right. The more people there are the more crooks there are. The more cars on the road the more crashes. The more people that know how to read the more they'll want to take over the world. Gotta keep "them" all stupid. Keep gps out of "their" hands. That kind of thinking reminds me of some of groups that want to keep their women from learning, keep knowledge from the populace, etc. It's one of the oldest, meanest, and misinformed arguments there is.
  15. Any radio receiver has to have a bit of analog circuitry. You said you had gotten water inside. If the was any residue left on the circuit board near the antana input it could effect the analog part of the device. If the power was on when you got water inside it could have damaged some of the analog compontents. Another possibility is a stuck bit. A digital device could have the bit that doesn't change state and still not have a catastrophic failure. Therefore you might want to send the unit in to have it check and/or repaired. Byron
  16. We were recently looking for a cache that was along side nice country drive road when I looked across the road a llama was standing there watching us. He then moved a bit to get a closer look.
  17. I tried using Symantec's fire wall. I shut it off and went back to Microsoft's XP firewall. I use Zone Alarm on my 98 machines. I don't remember what all the problems with Symantec were, but it was very frustrating to use. Byron
  18. Actually I use both. NG uses USGS top maps some of which haven't been updated in years. The gound is mostly the same, but the roads and buildings might not be. USGS also has all the ground features. Delorme will often not include some lakes and tarns, at least that's what I've noticed. Delorme does have auto routing, which will route you along roads or trails. NG you have to trace your path. Delorme does seems to be more current on man made features. My navigator, (Anne) will often have a laptop computer sitting on her lap while we're driving. Delorme has a split screen feature that will allow you see two different levels of zoom at the same time, which is great for traveling. It depends on what I'm doing on which one I use. For hiking I like the NG to get more of the natural features. Good luck
  19. Yup, And the best thing to do to stop is come to forums and whine about it. Must work since so many seem to do that.
