Repainting Jeeps: They did travel to the Midwest Geobash and had a conversation with Jeremy from Groundspeak...as far as I know, they received permission from Jermey to repaint jeeps. As I have said...never assume anything, it only leads to assumptions. My bad!!! I guess I really need to pay attention more often when people are speaking to me. So, that is all I have to add to that...again, my bad. At any rate...I guess I never really had a point here except to acknowledge my mistake...thanks Moop for the correction. Hey, So, I may get myself into trouble here on the forums...but I think this one deserves a little statement. I know these cachers and have cached with them on many ocassions...yes, they have a lot of jeeps and other tb's in their account and are repainting jeeps...so let's look at this one at a time. Repainting Jeeps: They did travel to the Midwest Geobash and had a conversation with Jeremy from Groundspeak...as far as I know, they received permission from Jermey to repaint jeeps. They mentioned that he thought what they were doing was very creative. Number of Jeeps in their account: Many of the Jeeps they received they have received by hand from other cachers requesting them to modify the jeep...once done, the jeep is sent back to the before mentioned cacher to do as he/she pleases...hopefully try to send back into the wild. Sure, this may all be second hand knowledge...but I have come to believe that I can trust these cachers. I may or may not like what they are doing (still not sure how I feel about it...), but if they have received the "ok" then I guess to each their own. I still enjoying their friendship and enjoy caching with them as much as possible. It (altered jeep) is still a trackable and I will move it on...as far as I understand it, the jeep contest is by vote anyway...so it is all a matter of public opinion when it comes to who wins and doesn't win. Now, sure, not all the jeeps in the account were handed or mailed to them by other cachers, but with the ok from Jeremy to modify the jeeps, they are trying their best to get them back out as soon as possible. As far as number of TB's and jeeps in the account...maybe someone that moves as many travel bugs as they do deserves some patience. Before we go about labeling some people, maybe we need to know a little more of the story. So, as far as letting a jeep or two sit in my account...because I know someone will check my account after reading my post...I have one from 04-yellow, 05-white, 06-green and two from 07-red. There happens to be a couple jeep hoarders in my home area (at least two freely admit to being hoarders)...thus I try to swap jeeps for jeeps at caches and events as much as possible without to many dropped in my home area. With so few 04-yellows around anymore, I share that one with anyone at events and swap it for another yellow when one shows up. Same with the 05-white. The green are becoming as hard to find as the yellow and white in my area as well. One of the red jeeps I have will be given away to anther cacher at an event I am hosting this Thrusday...they other I hope to trade this weekend while caching another event (maybe the yellow, white and green as well if I am lucky). So, I may have a couple in my account at all times...but I make no attempt to hide that...I don't steal jeeps/tb's/coins and report them as "missing"...I move them on as soon as possible. So, that is my 2 cents on this situation...it may not have anything to do directly with the thread, but I felt I needed to respond on this matter. Later, ArcherDragoon

Hey, Sorry to hear your first hide experience didn't go as planned. I too have had similar experiences on different cache hides...(too close to stage(s) of a multi, puzzle...etc). Just work with your reviewer and get the whole thing straightened out. Don't blame Mountain Climber...he is just a volunteer and trying to do the job by following the guidlines set forth by Groundspeak. The reviewer in Minnesota (SurferJoe) worked with me in getting a cache published that at first was too close to a multi in a small park...at least in my experince, reviewers want to work with cachers. Just remember that reviewers are volunteers and they are just trying to do their job. Don't take it personal. I will admit, one of the main reasons I first became a Premium Member was in order to see Member Only Caches (mainly because one was in a park in my area that I wanted to hide a cache in...so I needed to know where the cache was). Now, I have continued to remain a Premium Member because of the bonus stuff (like PQs and Bookmarks and what not). Yes, placing a cache can take alot of work and it is upsetting to be told it can't go where you want it...just work with your reviewer and move the cache as needed. Hey, It's tough, but it is one of those things one has to expect and shrug off as a geocacher (cache owner or otherwise). I agree with the whole TB's and Geocoins are not swag (afterall their whole mission is to travel and/or complete goals...more then just to be traded) and swag is meant to be traded...but it is not always going to happen. To be honest...I am not a big swag person...I am more about the hunt. Most of the time (vast majority of the time) I don't bother to even look through swag...I just sign the log book and move on. I guess I go by the very basic rules of caching...(taken from GC.com) ------- What are the rules in Geocaching? Geocaching is a relatively new phenomenon. Therefore, the rules are very simple: 1. Take something from the cache 2. Leave something in the cache 3. Write about it in the logbook ------- I am more the "Take only memories...Leave only footprints" type of cacher...and write about the find in your log (typically the electronic log for me more than the log book in the cache). I guess, as a couple cachers have stated before me...as long as someone just goes with "Take something...Leave something" I am fine with that, but if that doesn't happen...I just shrug my shoulders and move on. I try to keep one of my caches stocked with good swag...but that is only because it is so close to home...I do notice the good stuff leaving more often then being traded...I guess I just sort of expected that to happen and take it with a grain of salt... The thing about coins is that once it's gone, it's gone. Coins are about the coin. Travel bugs are mostly about the mission. Coins can also be about the mission. Sure, the icon can be cool (I will freely admit that many times I look for coins because of the icon)...but I have been more than happy to be part of a coin's mission/goal (a couple coins as well as replacements with great missions have been through my hands). Now, unrelated to the quote above... My opinion: As far as making "fake coins"...I freely admit to that in my previous post; to each their own, but I also am sure to clearly state that in the description (with the understanding that there are cachers that do not like "fake" coins-I respect that and understand their disapointment should they find a "fake" coin when they may have been expecting the real-deal). I guess I just enjoy living vicariously through my trackables (real, fake, replacements...etc). Again, this is just my opinion and we are all welcome to feel different. Later, ArcherDragoon

Hey, The thing to check would be if the owner of the coin made the copy or someone else did if you really want to know... I have even made some replacements for coins as well as travel bugs at the request of owners (either something was missing or damaged)...typically geofriends in the area, but I have replaced/repaired tbs for cachers I do not know personally. As a coin/travel bug owner, I have had several go missing (coins and travel bugs...it comes with the territory and I just except it as fact---sad but true; coins/travel bugs will go missing) and have needed to make replicas/replacements. After having a couple of my coins go missing right after I placed them in their first cache I dropped them in (different caches...not all in once cache) I have made a couple into replicas/replacements. I figured why let the coin just die...why not keep the "spirt" of the coin alive and send out a replica (or as I call it a Pseudo-coin)...but I clearly have that stated on the coin page. Everyone has their own feeling regarding coins/tbs (Move vs Discover, Original vs Copies, Coins at Events vs No Events for a Coin...etc) and I respect those feelings and try to make it clear on my tb pages in case someone comes across a coin/tb of mine and wants to verify that at copy was created by meself (as the owner) or someone else. I even have a couple coins that I think are really cool and want to keep...so I made a replica for those coins and sent that out to travel. We are all going to come across copies at sometime and I think that some of the copies (at least how someone made a replica as a coin owner---I in no way endorse taking/stealing someone's coin/tb and making a copy because it looks cool---it is someone else's coin/tb afterall) are just as creative as the coin itself. I do agree with Mertat...geocoin collecting can (is) addicting...but all the coins in my collection I have purchased with my own money!!! I know the feeling of having a coin/tb stolen (and yes I do know at least two of the coins that have gone missing were stolen---the others I can only assume were lost by mistake) and don't want others to feel the same way.
